Not much to tell! Pauline dropped me and Dave off at the airport and we flew Royal Brunei (quite good - they even blessed the plane!) to Brunei, internet cafe-d for 5 hrs, resisted the temptation to buy more postcards, looked for gold plated things but didn't find any and then flew on to Sydney where Pete had arrived an hour before us by flying direct by Singapore Airlines. Grr!... read more

I suppose my travels officially started when I boarded the green double-decker bus bound for Osaka. Leaving Izumi has been one of the most heart-wrenching, stressful, emotional events I have ever experienced in my entire life. I just didn't expect it to be so hard. For almost a month before my departure I was so busy I could hardly see straight. There were goodbye parties, leaving speeches, dinners, packing, packing and more packing to do. So many loose ends to tie up. I was even doing last minute paper work in the car on the way to the bus station. 6 of my fingers were bloody and in bandaids by the time I finished all the cleaning and packing to be done in my last few days in the village. In fact, leaving was so completely ... read more

Beijing, a city of legend, myth, magic, confusion, and millions of people. We have been here for about a week now and have stayed in two different locations, the first of which was horrible. It was four stories under ground, similar to a dungeon, and the shared bathroom and shower area was, well lets say less than clean. Even though the living conditions were not so good we were in a pretty good location. Beijing is probably the largest city that we have visited on this trip. Everything is very spread out. There is a subway and it is somewhat crowded but we have been on worse. It is quite hot though, since it is not air conditioned like most that we have experienced. We do use it often but if you have to wait in ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kozencherry July 27th 2005

Well, there's not too much to report since my last update. I've decided to drop dance. It's making me feel exhausted all the time and it's so hot and the dance studio is outdoors. I think the biggest problem is that I'm having a hard time eating most of the non-carbohydrate foods, and so I just don't have the energy for dance in 90 degree weather for two hours a day. I've decided to take up woodcarving instead. Also, I discovered yesterday that my phone will never work in Kerala, and that I'd have to buy an Indian phone, which is too expensive (even though compared to the US it's dirt cheap). Apparently 90% of India works on 900 bandwitdth (which my phone has along with 850/1900), but Kerala and a few other select places work ... read more

Hello, quick update. Arrived safe and sound. Very busy little place, full of activity. Bad news, full of travelers also. No plan planning is not so great, but does make things more adventourous. The guesthouse we thought to stay at was full, but we wandered around alleys and got another that was great, one stop and all. One bed, one mattress on the floor, one bathroom with toilet and shower as one.......okay fun story oh and one spider, and worst, only one night. It was great really called Awana sleep and eat. Funny. Great people great stories. Now at the TopNorth Guest house. Stinky, hot and mildewy the guy above us has a shower and it showers in our room. I love that....not. Saw the zoo, crazy story, but save it for more time. Not to ... read more

Asia » Uzbekistan » Tashkent July 26th 2005

After a restless night I am finally allowed to get up and pack for my early flight to Tashkent. The hotel provides a shuttle bus and drops me off at the proper airline counter, not exactly what I had imagined likely for Uzbekistan Airways. Check in is rapid, not too many travellers about, but my lacking a proper visa raises some questions. I explain and show to the clerk and two embassy affiliated men present at the gate that my travel agent has prepared a visa support letter for a standard visa on arrival. Yeah, right. They are not convinced. One of the guys grabs his walkie talkie and disappears with all my papers for some 20 minutes. I later learn that he's been in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All checks out fine ... read more

I write this final journal entry from a busy internet cafe on the Khao San Road, oh yes, back in the steamy noodle metropolis of Bangkok one last time. I spent the day on the pool deck of that same hotel I snuck into three months ago on my first days here... I can hardly believe how quickly time has passed. In 12 hours, I'll be on a 747 Jumbo Jet bound for home... but not before stopping in Taipei, Anchorage and New York. At noon on Wednesday, if all goes according to plan, I'll touch down in Halifax after three months of South East Asian Adventures. I set out on this journey to find something. I'm not sure what it was, but I THINK I've found it. I feel satisfied, fulfilled and ready to come ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei July 26th 2005

Day 2 (26 July 2005) The sun rose early in summer in Taipei. But we couldn't care less. It was close to 8am as we woke up. After a quick breakfast, we headed straight to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall to pay respect to Taiwan's one-time dictator. Completed in 1980, it took us 89 steps to reach the Main Hall where an hourly change of guards was taking place. Our next destination was Taipei Main Station where we roamed around the Taipei Underground Mall . Lunch was at Mitsukoshi Departmental Store where we were greeted by the ladies manning the elevators to B1. We roamed around the neighbourhood before crossing the road to the 228 Peace Park and the National Taiwan Museum. The scorching heat took a toll on me and I caught some sleep ... read more

T. indochinensis - definitely not an endangered species Travelling in South East Asia you will sooner or later come along some of the notorious long time-travellers also known as T. indochinensis: slovenly pants, washy shirt (preferred colours are pink, orange or turquoise and adorned with a cool slogan like: I am home, take me drunk) are the common recognition signs. Real beauties combine this with a sarong-like-thing wrapped around and over any available body part which is not yet covered with wooden pearls, seashells and shark teeth. The feet of course are peeking out of a pair of sandals or even flip-flops bought on any local market. This looks silly, indeed, but given the climatic situation no one can be blamed for that. The hair is either short (females) or long (males) or forced into dreadlocks ... read more

Hotel: SIL Hotel (Yerevan, Armenia) $75 We wasted a lot of time this morning trying to find a bank that would cash D's AmEx travellers checks; no place wanted to take them (even with the AMEX symbol on the door!) We finally found a place that supposedly would cash them. My wife's ankle had been acting up, while he was inside the bank we sat down on the steps outside to give it a rest. A guard came out and motioned that we couldn't sit there. So we walked across the street and sat on the curb. She still kept giving us dirty looks! Still unsuccessful in cashing D's TC's (they wanted the receipt which was back at the hotel), we headed back to Republic Square which had an ATM. We found a taxi driver in ... read more
