Day 5 (29 July 2005) We left Fuh Chun Hotel early today to make our way to Sun Moon Lake. A bus outside the hotel took us to Puli before we change yet another bus to Sun Moon Lake. Breakfast was egg and ham sandwich & soya milk purchased at a roadside stall in Puli. Really yummy though may not be the most hygienic. The lake itself was ……BIG. After getting ourselves acquainted at the information office, we proceed to engage in a boat tour around the lake together with 3 fellow Taiwanese. Not much people today so the 3 idyllic stops around the lake was ‘longer’ than usual according to them. The rest of the afternoon was spent browsing through the souvenir stores and taking in the fresh cool air the area had to ... read more

All is booked for Pokhara. I am leaving Saturday morning at 10:00, flying with Shangri-la Airline. This gives me some time to do some further tourist things in Kathmandu for the day. After a late wake up, I feel like a colony of bats have taken hold of my head (a peculiar feeling, I assure you). I decide that a shower will do the trick; it fails miserably. I head out into the painfully strong sun to plunge my head underwater in the swimming pool. It helps a little. I try to explain to the waiter that I am in need of a super-strength espresso but I get instead a large cup of weak coffee. 2 swims and a small nap later, I finally feel ready to tackle the bustle of the city. I take a ... read more

...and the return to Chiang Mai Presently I am slightly frustrated...I thought I found the ultimate deal 20 baht (the Thai currency) for an hour of internet access. Sounds splendid, yet I cannot access my primary email account, thus I am unable to retrieve my password for my blog. So very tragic, but alas, if this is the worst of my problems...I could only hope that is the case. At the moment I am making use of the computer access to write my entry, and I will find another computer and add the entry later (at my swank hotel in Chiang Mai they charge 50 baht for 10 minutes which equates to a dollar twenty-five). More than you probably need or want to know.... Today was filled with splendid adventures...but perhaps I should begin where I ... read more

Hotel: Sheraton Metechi Palace (Tbilisi, Georgia) $0 I had reserved an award at the Sheraton Metechi Palace in Tbilisi for our final night in Tbilisi. The hotel isn't very convenient for the rest of town, being along the road to the airport about 8 blocks east of the Lile Hotel. My wife and I walked over this morning and claimed our bag that we had left earlier this week. The Sheraton isn't much to look at from the outside (Lonely Planet describes it as a Swedish prison); but the rooms inside were quite comfortable. The breakfast buffet was decent, and afterwards we went for a relaxing swim in the pool (we didn't wait 30 minutes!). Around 11AM I left for Gori, my wife stayed behind to relax at the hotel. The minibus ride ($1.50) was about ... read more

Asia July 29th 2005

After the tour group left for Hong Kong we spent a couple of quiet days in Yangshuo. We explored the town, walking along the river bank and enjoying the local cafes. I was very pleased to find some book exchanges and second hand bookstores. A few happy hours were spent choosing some books to replenish my library here. We bought 20 books with us but I had read most of them (I have been rationing myself!) and English books are impossible to buy in Wuhan - unless you enjoy the classics. I enjoy reading them but not to the exclusion of everything else. Though quite expensive I bought a selection and posted them back to school. We didn’t do the boat trip down the Li River when the rest of the tour did it, mainly because ... read more

Arrived safe and sound and met up with my friends Jo and Tess (who I am travelling with for the first three weeks of my 12 month adventure) at the immigration queue in Bangkok which was a rather surreal experience, made even more so by 20 hours of travelling!! We only stayed one night in Bangkok (just like the song!) and then flew to Ho Chi Minh on Wednesday, although most of the locals still refer to it as Saigon and will correct you if you call it HCM. It is an amazing place, however the first time you come into contact with Vietmanese driving is possibly the most scariest experience you will ever have. The traffic rules are that there are no rules! Scooters, mopeds and motorbikes are king of the roads and there are ... read more

Asia » China » Shandong July 29th 2005

No matter what I do, I can't get used to this life in China. I know I've only been here for 9 days, but I just.. can't. Teaching has been going alright. Some days are better than others, as is the case with most jobs. I like the kids, but find teaching very tiring. When I teach 6 hours in a day, I go home and all I want to do is sleep. The little kids are fun though. Lots of energy. I've found a few interesting places, some places to eat that remind me a bit of home.. and some places that don't so much. Last night I tried this cold, sweet, milky rice and tofu soup that I wasn't too fond of, but it's good to try new things. It's been a very difficult ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala July 29th 2005

Since I have been Kerala for one week and have visited a lot of places I am going to write about my experience of the whole place rather than do individual entries on each. My first port of call was Ernakulam (Cochin) which is a major port and the largest city in Kerala. Arriving at 6.00am made for an enjoyable change as at first light there was no one around to hassle us and we were able to walk freely taking in the city for 2 km to catch a ferry to Fort Cochin, the best part of the city to visit and stay. What really struck me about Cochin relative to other cities is that it is clean with not so many open sewers, there are also no beggars. The reason for these differences will ... read more

Asia » Singapore July 29th 2005

Apologies if the nonsense to photo ratio goes to DEFCON III in this article - I just couldn't be bothered lugging my camera around Singapore. Lots of lovely photos of Bali and Lombok coming in the next report, plus the odd briny tale of adventure and derring do. To my recollection, which is not always the best, the only time I have been served a pint of foaming ale by a completely stark naked barman was in the Tumbledown Dick, Farnborough, Hampshire. I had just left college and was sharing a flat with two other young men of (fairly) like mind, in a splendid mansion-like property slap bang in the heart of middle-class, middle-management commuterdom. Our large property was divided into four separate flats, with a grand drive, allocated parking spaces and leafy gardens. Although we ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Northern Thailand » Chiang Khong July 29th 2005

Well two days and 1000 kms of bus and train later, and I'm sitting here in Chiang Khong on the Mekong River right up in the Golden Triangle. Laos is literally 100m away from our guesthouse (or however wide the river is) and we'll be heading there at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I found out about a place in Vang Vieng (about 100 or so k's north of Vientiane) that does WWOOFing, and I might look into doing that for a week or so! I've decided that the ONLY way to travel is to stay somewhere for more than just a few days (more than a week too, but you can only get 15 days in Laos, so I wanna see a bit more of it). The actual TRAVELLING part of travelling sucks! I've taken to lying ... read more
