Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra July 31st 2005

Haven't got many nice things to say about agra, then again neither did many of the tourists we met there either. The hassle factor goes through the roof - especially from the rickshaw drivers (one particular one who stated passionately that he was an honest man, then ripped us off). It was hot, sweaty, smelly - very smelly, and overpriced. For westerners to visit the Taj Majal it was 10 quid, 32.5 times the price Indian nationals paid - try that at the London museums! To be fair it was very beautiful, but they didn't allow photos inside, and you couldn't go downstairs any more. To mention the rest: Agra Fort is good and not too overpriced (5 quid), tourist rest house is a little haven from the heat, hassle and humidity of the city, and ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Pokhara July 31st 2005

Luckily the morning was clear, the sky was blue and the Annapurna was there for all to see. The jeep from the flight centre came to pick me up on time and we promptly got going. John, the Nepalese driver was also my instructor for both flights, he explained that because it was the low season they were normally close, he was just there to test the equipment and make sure it wasn’t rotting. Because of my pretty dark eyes (and my pretty green dollars) he would specially reopen for me today. I expressed my gratitude, he looked a bit embarrassed and finally told me that because he was close he had no license, so should anything happen I would not be covered by any insurance whatsoever. I pondered and decided to go for it anyway, ... read more

Asia » Taiwan » Taipei July 31st 2005

Day 7 (31 July 2005) Coming to the 2nd last day of our “Taiwan” Campaign. We left our hotel early today to visit the Miniature Museum so that we could be on time for check out. This place was recommended by I Weekly. Anyway, it was relatively small to justify the high cost of entry fees. And the golden rule applies - no picture taking. Of course we did smuggle a few shots from it because we won’t be doing ourselves justice if we left the place without any “memories”. The display was well nice right up to the final details. We left Taipei city to check into our final accommodation in See’s Revert Hotel in Danshui. Our accommodation “improved” by the day from the unforgettable Amigo Hostels right up to our final stop. It ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Guangzhou July 31st 2005

From Xiamen, I took a 26-hour train ride to Guanzhou, the capital city of the Guandong Province and one of the five centers of the Pearl Delta (others being Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai). This is the ancestral province of the people from Hong Kong and the home of Cantonese. While I do not consider myself Cantonese (far from it), my great-grandmother is from this province. I shared a sleeper compartment with a family with two girls. How they managed to have two kids in the one-child policy is beyond my understanding. I thought only rich people could afford to pay the penalty associated with having extra children, and here they were sharing the cheap hard-bed compartment with me. I suppose I had a lot of time to ponder this question, given the girls were ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Shinjuku July 31st 2005

When I first arrived in Japan we spent 3 days at the Keio Plaza Hotel for Tokyo Orientation. I am not going to say much more about this because it was a month ago (due to the fact that I took so long to begin this travel blog). However, it was a lot of fun, and I wanted to post some of the pictures from it. Enjoy!... read more

Asia » Uzbekistan » Karakalpakstan » Nukus July 31st 2005

Picking up the pieces from last night we're quite happy to return to Nukus. We load up the car but before leaving we head downtown to the local Aral Sea museum, since the caretakers have opened it especially for us. It is a small hall with various regional memorabilia, paintings of fishermen, models of fishing vessels made by school children, photographs from the old canning factories, stuffed animals from the region and so on. Paging through a binder with old photographs I suddenly come across a photograph that captures my interest. It depicts some ships and a special tractor with a crane that I recognize from one of the photos I originally found on the Internet months ago. On this photo the tractor can be seen with around ten grounded vessel in the desert and I ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan July 31st 2005

I feel so relaxed. have been lazing about on the beach for ages. its so beautiful. I'm quite used to Thailand now which is good. At first the sights and sounds of Bangkok espeicially are quite overwhelming. I leave for Vietnam this afternoon and have booked the plane for Xiamen, China after that. I love the shopping here but i've got so much junk now i can barely carry it. deciding to post some junk home was the obvious choice, unfortunately once i got to the post office yesterday it was closeing and i was assured it would be open 9-12 the next day. on my return appearing carrying four bags full of junk through bangkok they were closed! The thai people outside must have thought i was mad. Sweating and angriliy gesturing at the closed ... read more

Another update from the school computer, but I think I will be getting a laptop sometime this week. Crossing my fingers at least. Daphne said she will take me. Yesterday I worked for three hours in the morning at the JAC, then I came back to the school and went for lunch with Duncan at Jenny's cafe, which is a Western food cafe that doesn't have the greatest food but is at least familiar. I had fettucini alfredo and a vanilla milkshake, both slightly on the expensive side in chinese standards, but worth it for a taste of home. I am getting the worst cravings here for Western food, worse than the ones I get at home. All I wanted the other night was grapes!! After lunch we went to the U-mart, which is a Western ... read more
