Lisa has classes some of the days, so I ventured out on my own. I visited a butterfly farm and then a spice garden. On the way I met a very nice couple from Holland. I had to take a bus about 1hr and a half away to get there! On the way back, I stopped in a little village to have lunch. It can be very difficult to order when there isn't a menu. I ended up stopping at an Indian restaurant and having roti, ( a type of pancake) and some cold curried chicken. It wasn't bad considering it was only a buck! ... read more

Hi, We arrived to Khatgal, a small village on a river, just a few km from lake Khovsgul, and said goodbye to our driver. We started to arrange a horse trekking trip for the following day. Somehow instead of splitting and enjoying the lake separately, we added two more people to our group, and hit the road with 9 riders, 3 guides, and 3 pack horses for all the bags, tents, food, etc. In the morning we bought some more food, loaded the horses, and then mounted our horses. When they gave us the horses the guide said that he needs a good rider for one of the horses, because "this horse likes to gallop". Of course I took it immediately. I felt it almost immediately. He just wanted to run all the time. I had ... read more

I stopped using this blog near the end of my trip and began sending mass emails. I'm copying those emails into here now for my own memories. Sent: July 14, 2005 6:18:35 AM Hey everyone! Well I stayed on Ko Phi Phi a little longer than expected, it was awesome. It was demolished by the tsunami but its slowly getting things back together as backpackers swarm in to volunteer - I did a little rubble clearing and gardening myself. I had a real scare the first day I was there - there was another earthquake off of Sumatra and hours later the tsunami sirens started going off in Phi Phi resulting in Mayhem - people running down the streets in a panic trying to find high ground. Naturally I followed the mob unsure of where they ... read more

Hotel: Hotel Lile (Tbilisi, Georgia) $40 After a decent breakfast, a taxi driver arrived and we set off for Vardzia, the cave city. The landscape soon changed from rolling meadows to more mountainous terrain. The driver had agreed to take us to Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe (~50 miles) for $50. The road was in pretty bad shape for most of the trip, and our driver was flying along. Vardzia is a cave city located about 15 miles off the Akhalkalaki to Akhaltsikhe road, the royal city in the late 1100's consisted of over 700 caves carved into the cliffsides, supporting a population of tens of thousands. The caves are still inhabited by monks to this day. They are a good climb up from the valley below. There is a secret passageway carved through the rock that was ... read more

Namaste everyone. Namaste is my new word for the day, it means: hello, welcome, pleased to meet you, see you soon, thank you all at once. In actual fact, the real meaning is: "may the whole of your qualities be blessed and protected by the gods". So there, you, Namaste all. Today is my admin day. There is much to be done. Go to the French embassy and clear the security issues for Pokhara and the surrounding region. Go to the travel agent and sort out my visa for Buthan. Find a New Hotel. Get my washing done. Exchange books. Book flights to Pokhara. Organise excursions in Pokhara. The hotel served me a most delicious breakfast on the roof of the hotel (I am getting quite addicted to the Nepalese tea, served very sweet with a ... read more

Day 4 (28 July 2005) We left Taipei to Taichung after saying goodbye to the not so perfect url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1432365-d1441171-r48734727-Amigo_Hostel-Taipei_County.htmlAmigo Hostel in the afternon. Phui ~ I'm not going to stay there again even its for free. From Taipei Main Station, the Tze Chiang Express train took 2.5 hours to reach the city of TaiChung. With little difficulty, we managed to check into the Fuh Chun Hotel opposite the train station at a mere NT780 or S$40. Yes, it's aging but it's certainly clean and relatively well-maintained for the prices we paid for 2 nights. Taichung is probably another Taipei in the making. Plans are on the way to introduce a similar MRT system in the not so distant future. Without the MRT system, 2 of us felt that we had lost our legs as transport options ... read more

Well folks, I've been in India now two weeks and I have two weeks to go (actually it was two weeks yesterday, but close enough). I started woodcarving today, and it's great. I'm making a lotus flower. I find that I'm staying well after my class is over to get parts of it finnished. I'm really excited about being able to bring back some samples of my woodcarving. My ayurvedic massage yesterday was quite an experience. Modesty went out the window. The massage is given on a wooden table with no sheet or anything. On top of that, there don't seem to be many places that are off-limits for massaging. All in all, though, it was a really nice experience. Yesterday I also washed my clothes. This involves pouring water and detergent into a bucket and ... read more

I wake up with a terrible cold and a running nose. Today's plan is to reach Nukus by air, but the plane does not leave until late in the afternoon. I decide to go sightseeing somewhere and inspect my new map, which has some nice colour photos of interesting places, and point the finger towards Kukeldosch Medressah near the Chor-Su bazar and metro station. The first step is actually reaching the metro, and I decide to give it a try on foot. Sure enough it doesn't take that long, but in doing so the heat has my skin soaked with water. Since I practised riding the metro with Shoista yesterday it turns out very easy for me to find the proper transfer point at Pachtakor and switch to the Uzbekistan line. However, my plan is foiled ... read more

Asia » China » Tibet July 27th 2005

If you were discouraged about the state of Tibetan culture in Lhasa while reading my last Postcard, I am happy to report that rural Tibet remains distinctly Tibetan, for now. To see rural Tibet, in fact to just leave the two largest cities Lhasa or Shigatse, requires an Alien Travel Permit (in addition to the Alien Entry Permit required to come to Lhasa) and a way to get around since public transport is often non-existent. Most people get together into groups of 4 or 5, chose an itinerary and rent a 4x4 with Tibetan driver. Four-wheel drive is an absolute necessity. I was joined by Martijn from Belgium and a Chinese couple who also spoke English. This worked out well since our driver spoke Tibetan and Chinese but no English. Our 6-day itinerary took us from ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City July 27th 2005

This was our last leg of the Malaysia tour. Malacca, or Melaka depending on how you wanna spell it, is Malaysia's oldest city. I don't remember much of its history, though our tour guide spent about three hours explaining it. I had a cold and had energy sucked outta me. Anyway, it involves the Dutch and St. Francis and battles and other interesting stuff. ... read more
