Having spent three nights at the Karnmanee I have not really been making much use of my time in Bangkok. I had planned to see my friend Kay but ended up spending more time on my own than anticipated. I like to hang around the shops and eateries at Pradiphat Road, a street which has most of the things you could need, and is blissfully devoid of tourist mobs and hawkers. In the evenings a myriad of food stalls come out and it is nice to walk around to pick up spicy snacks and fresh fruit. The Skytrain is another piece of engineering that I really appreciate. It offers easy access to areas otherwise locked up in what can sometimes be maddening traffic jams. Watching the traffic though, is a pastime that rarely gets old to ... read more

The day has finally arrived ! We are terribly excited about the prospect of going white-water-rafting in Tibet. Hopefully, we might even get a T-shirt to prove it. Chris, the Australian chap in charge of the company, came to pick us up in his lovely lime green jeep. He is a terribly nice chap. It took him three years to set up the company, get the permits and authorisations to operate. 51% of his business is owned by a large Chinese company. He has to renew his visa every two months, a scary situation considering the huge investment that it must be, importing the boats and all the kit from the U.S and Canada. About an hour and a half away from Lhasa, on a surprisingly smooth road, we saw the boats, all ready and waiting ... read more

Hotel: Hotel Lile (Tbilisi, Georgia) $40 Woke up this morning to an absolutely clear sky; the view out the window of our hotel was stunning with the Tsminda church high above and the snowcapped peak of Mt. Kazbek behind it. We hoped to catch one of the early marshrutkas to Tbilisi around 8 AM; we were lucky to catch one that actually left 20 minutes early. The fare was 8 GEL ($4.50) for the 4 hr ride back to Tbilisi. Originally, we had been planning on going all the way through to Armenia today, but decided to spend an extra afternoon in Tbilisi and catch the early morning shuttle to Alaverdi. We took the metro back to Hotel Lile, which now had two rooms available (out of only three rooms in the hotel!). My wife and ... read more

Yangshuo was a very laid back tourist town! We saw more Western tourists there then anywhere else that we had visited in the previous month and absolutely hordes of Chinese tourists as well. It was very busy, particularly after dark when it was cooler. The weather was very humid and constantly fogged up our sunglasses and camera lens. Our hotel was very comfortable and we immediately negotiated a room rate for the extra few days we wished to spend in Yangshuo after we had left the Intrepid tour. They were all going on an overnight train to Hong Kong but we decided we didn’t wish to have the added cost and time needed to return to mainland China. Also we had decided to visit the Dragon Back rice terraces which were north of Yangshuo. My first ... read more

So we left vang vieng on a 7hr windy bus journey through the mountains to get here. Said goodbye to our little group which was quite sad. But as soon as we arrived here we fell in love. Its a small town on the mekong river. A main road full of little bakeries and handicraft shops. A lovely night market where you can actually look at the stuff without being hassled. The people are still nice. We have spent the last few days making good use of a place called le cinema where you go and rent out a movie and a room which is filled with cushions. You can just sit and watch a film, its great and weve seen some good'uns. There are plenty of temples here but to be honest you become a ... read more

So, we are finally in Vang Vien. Vientienne is being crossed of our list due to a meeting of government officials. They are prohibiting tourists from entering the city. Oh well, that gives us more time on the islands. Remmember how I said Natalie riding her bike was funny??? I take it back. Her falling off the bike is funnier!!!!!!! It was so inevitable, though. There are pictures on her blog. She is hiding her head in shame. Hahahahaha. Last night we went out to a club. The only club in Luang Prabang that allowes dancing. It was insane. There was line dancing, and no one touched each other. If they did, they laughed hysterically. We participated in the PG rated dancing for some time, and then went on our way. Our hotel was amazing, except ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai July 24th 2005

Can Shanghai be but a technological mirage? An economic miracle? This city has to be seen to be believed. From images I have seen before, I though it'd be a city with mostly short, flat buildings and a few tacky mega-skyscrapers and that hideous globe and column tower )Oriental Peal Tower). Boy was I wrong! Shanghai is a skyscraper wonderland, on its way to be as dense as Manhatten but much bigger in scale. And somehow, when I am in Shanghai, those buildings I thought would be tacky turned out to be quite fitting and actually quite awesome. Maybe it's all the summer haze, maybe it's the glimmering light show that the Oriental Pearl Tower. Maybe it's all the Hong-Kong-, Vegas-, and Tokyo-style lighted billboards and buildings that have created an enchanting if not disorienting neon ... read more

Asia » Singapore July 24th 2005

Lie in, packing (again), lunch at Cafe Siam in Lan Kwai Fong - wonton soup - really nice though don't think it way very authentic - only had a spoon! Bought HP finally (dave hasn't stopped reading it since) and went to pick up luggage, catch the shuttle bus to central, check in at central (v handy), shuttle train to airport and fly United to Singapore! Browed pens to spend our last few dollars and almost missed the plane... i mean, timed it perfectly so we didn't have to queue :o). Arrived in Singapore to be greeted by Pete and Pauline and Pauline's dad's merc (mmm). Hurrah! We managed to meet up! They'd been scuba diving in Malaysia the last few days and pete's back was pure lobster! They took us to the hostel they'd booked ... read more
