May 18th - Fukuoka Arrived in Japan safely. The flight wasn’t bad at all. Flying into Tokyo, I used Japan Airlines. They had the most courteous and friendly staff out of any airlines that I have ever been on, and the airplane was pretty high tech. You had your own computer terminal positioned in the seat in front of you. You could select from over 5 movies to play, several games, tv shows, and radio. Very cool. I watched the new Producers movie and the new King Kong. King Kong was horrible by the way. I’m glad I didn’t spend real money on it. The Producers, on the other hand, was awesome. Mel Brooks wrote and directed the original movie back in the 60’s I believe, and in 2001, he re-released it on Broadway. This new ... read more

We are completing our third month here and have realized how integrated we have become into the program and the students here. No mistaking our foreignness for sure, but students have seen the opportunity we present and have vigorously seized upon it. They come to us with their professional and personal challenges and it has been a real privilege to be of use. We continue to be amazed at their talent and naiveté, their hard work and their acceptance of things that we would find intolerable. I have but three classes left to teach, followed by three weeks of presentations by students of their final projects. I think both sides will undergo some withdrawal when we return home/ We had the May Day holiday off and spent a week meditating and working at the Vipassana Center ... read more

We arrived in Krabi one day last week, and ending up staying one night in the wonderful krabi town, which is a must for all people thinking of coming to Thailand.....not! The bars and clubs on the street have strict no gun policys with large signs at the doors informing all potential clientele of this. It was just like Belfast! the hotel was great and we had aircon, fantastic, but we still left promptly the next morning and headed for Ao Nang beach, which was a bit more of what we have become accustom to. This small town is formed around its beach location with most businesses and hotels looking out over the sea to the sight of beautiful Hongs and rock formations erecting out of the ocean. This town therefore had taken quite a large ... read more

Today, May 18th, the weather is not very good. Very windy out and the clouds are grey. Today, we had planned to take a drive out to Shark Bay and check out the snorkeling there. We were told that Manna Rays, Reef Sharks, Great Barracuda, and Clown Fish were within view. Yesterday, we drove out to two different points of the island (South and East) and snorkeled there. Many beautiful coral and colorful fishies. It has been so much fun. Our daily regiment has been: up early, snorkel, back for breakfast (lots of fruit) and shower, go for a drive to another part of the island, snorkel, lunch, lay out, read, do some more exploring of the island (on our motorbike), and back for a shower and throw the frisbee around until dusk and the mosquitos ... read more

Sup peoples. Right now I am in Banaue where the 8th wonder of the world exists; the rice terraces. These terraces are so amazing. Yesterday we walked all through them hiking the whole way. We got all dirty and disgusting but it was simply breathetaking. Dont worry I have plenty of pictures but they certainly do not do it justice. The native people who farm and live in the rice terraces known as the Ifugao use to be head hunters within the last 100 years, but the missionaries came and tought them to settle disputes through trade. It is amazing to see how these people live. To even access the terraces that are deep into the mountains you have to walk along the edges which are less than a foot wide. This was extremely dangerous and ... read more

I just finished my first muay thai lesson, and it kicked ass! Both literally and figuratively, that is. For those not familiar with it, muay thai is kickboxing Thai style. A sort of no-holds-barred version of the Western variety where the best of the best hardly ever have both their feet on the ring floor at once in a fight and to the naked eye, it would seem neither feet. Three practically non-stop hours of stretching, cardio warm-ups, sparring and toning is what my “lesson” consists of. My coaches, muay thai fighers on the international circuit, show little mercy for not so athletic squealing females like myself. Actually, when I squawk in pain my trainer Chai who speaks just a handful of English words, finds it hilariously funny and laughs his head off. At least Mr. ... read more

"Chai chai...chai chai chai" shouts the 9th passing vendor holding a kettle or bucket to the train windows. How any of them can make ends meet competing with the other 17 (or so) sellers is beyond me, but they keep at it, in case a passenger missed the 'chai' call the 95th time, and may actually now want some. Chai is one of India's main drinks, tea with lashings of sugar and synonymous with India's trains. England could learn a thing or two from their cousins abroad when it comes to these long, moving things - they're quick, extensive and plentiful, every station is connected to the National Booking System by computer, and if you don't mind the occasional crowds or stink from the abysmal toilets, they're a great way of travelling. First you must book ... read more

Before coming to work today, I saw one of the groundskeepers in the gated community climb the coconut tree in front of the house. He climbed it just like a monkey - no special equipment. Apparently, the coconuts were ripe for picking - he started dropping them to the ground. The coconuts are collected in a bag and delivered to your door. There is also a papaya tree and banana tree in the yard. The sweetest bananas I have ever tasted. The papaya is like the small variety you can buy at home that are totally tasteless. If you want a sweeter papaya at home, you typically have to buy the big red papayas, but these small ones here are sweet as far as papaya goes. I love mangoes, and I had the sweetest, juciest mango ... read more

(Kev) The Peninsula is not a part of the typical backpacking scene. But we are not your typical backpackers, especially when Daryl is part of the team. Daryl told us about this place that constantly ranks amongst the top ten hotels in the world, and is annually the number one hotel in Bangkok. I loved the thought of staying at one of the top hotels in the world...but didn't seriously consider it, because it was not apart of my budget. My budget however is different from Daryl's and as it turns out Daryl has this thing called a play jar. The play jar is money he sets aside for amazing, and lavish things that wouldn't normally be apart of his or most people's budget. Well Daryl's play jar said he was going to stay at one ... read more
