Now sitting in a war zone with machine gun fire whizzing round my head and risking life and limb to post these fluffy shots of my fellow travellers! Seriously, Kathmandu is WELL chilled, very different from recent news reports and feeling safer than last time I visited with snipers perched on the rooves! Enjoying the vibe here so much that I'm not flying out now until 20th at least - am enjoying a break from the hectic routine! This page is primarily for my fellow travellers from my China/Tibet trip - Tashi Delek/ Namaste to all and hope the ongoing travels/ work (!) are going well. Unfortunately, with my memory card failing, I've lost several days of photos so if anybody can fill me in with theirs would be good.Still uploading photos so keep checking on ... read more

Nice to get back to dry warm weather in Guilin, after the rain of Shanghai. Only had one day in Guilin, so not much to say about it and I'll let the photographs tell the story instead. Guilin is known for its scenic location amongst a host of gnarled, 200m high rocky hills on the Li River. Spent the day wandering through the parks, and trying to figure out the strange names put on the limestone hill formations. The most notable one in the town is Elephant Trunk Hill (said to be the body of a sick imperial baggage elephant who was cared for by the locals and turned to stone rather than rejoin the emperor's army). Climbed some of the limestone peaks, spend time in Seven Star Park which had a zoo, where you could ... read more

So I'm back at Suk 11, my fav place in Bangkok. I leave tomorrow morning for China. after a longer trip than anticipated from Kanchanabury.. ended up taking teh local bus... I didn't get to do as much as I wanted to in Bangkok before leaving... oh well. After having my sunglasses for this whole trip so far, I finally lost them.. ARGH!!! So I tried spending the last of my ThaiBaht before leaving... new glasses, new shirt (woohoo!), and some other crap. So anyway, I'm really sad to be leaving S.E.A. but what can you do. I got a great e-mail from Carole.. my old roomie in Taipei, on how great Australia was ...thanks Carole! More and more convince.. LOL Alright, well I guess that's it. I have a line-up behind me waiting for teh ... read more

I don't really think about it this way most of the time but here I am almost completely illiterate. It's an interesting experience - not being able to read books or magazines that I normally love to read. But it's so much more than that. In India I also couldn't read books and magazines, but I could read signs. Here I can't even do that. I need assistance filling out forms or trying to find a place. I just walked up to a machine to get a number for line at a bank and I looked at the machine and said in Chinese. How do I get a number? The man had to press one button for me. It's only one simple button! But there was no way I was to know which button to press. ... read more

my disclaimer: this will be long and there will be a rather colorful description of gross things so if you don't feel like diving into a novel or reading about poop then do not proceed or proceed with extreme caution. We just returned from a 6 day everest adventure. Most of that time was spent in a landcruiser bumping our way through the backroads of tibet. We stopped at some monastaries and small towns on the way to everest....but i've seen enough monastaries for now so i can't exactly say that was a highlight. tibetan toilets are probably some of the worst i have ever come across. I have seen some narley ones in southeast asia, but at least those had butt sprayers to compensate. The basic format for the tibetan toilet is of the squat ... read more

We had a great day touring the old demilitarized zone. The sights themsleves needed quite a bit of imagination as there isn't much left of the old bunkers/military bases. But the guide we hired for the day was good fun and had loads of interesting tales to tell. He was only 17 at the time but his father had fought in the war for the south and he had picked up some stories from him. The highlight of the day was a tour round the old VC tunnels near Vinh Moc. We were also very glad we had opted to spend a few more pennies here and take a motorbike tour as we met some very unhappy travellers who had taken the bus tours and hated every minute of it. ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta May 16th 2006

En route to Bali I had a rather unpleasant encounter with a guy in the mens toilets who left no doubt in my mind that he was making indecent proposals. What is it with all the gay people suddenly!? That was three already in less than two weeks. On the way I also had to stop in Jakarta and wait for a while to catch my connecting flight to Bali. After about 4-6 hours or something silly like that I went to check in only to find that for some reason I had bought, instead of an onward ticket to Bali, a ticket all the way back to Padang!! Aaarrgh! I was not a happy bunny and convinced that it was their fault and not mine (of course...) I had no choice but to buy another ... read more

Spent 11 days in S'pore which went by rather quickly. Most of the times were spent with old friends who were very hospitable (especially Stella). It is quite amazing how I haven't seen these guys in 5 years (some a decade) and yet we all seem to gel back very well. Also it is nice to be in a city that speak English and is run with western efficiency after our brutal bus ride to Krabi from Surat Thani. It took as 8hours (instead of 3hr travel time) thanks to being driven around to bus driver friend's restaurants, tour companies, etc. Also we were forced to share the backseat of a mini van with an caucasion couple which resulted in very cramped 3 hr bus ride. To add insult to injury, because of lack of trunk ... read more

The full moon party had to be the craziest party I have ever taken part in, it's just immense. All the guys came together and we all met for a big old knees up. You get a bucket a bottle of Samsung (local Thai whisky) some coke and lots of red bull which is illegal in other parts of the world due to the high levels of anthetamine! It's one big messy piss up on the beach and everyone is just loving it! We found it pretty hard to get accomodation as it's so full at these times but we found a nice little room and all is good. It was great to see the others again but I am going to so miss them all. I have really made some friends for life, I will ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan May 16th 2006

Returning from Hsipaw, we stayed overnight in Mandalay (no Bay) before our boat ride to Bagan. We, of course, visited our favorite 'Chapati Stand' for a final dinner in Mandalay. The boat ride lasted approximately five hours down the Ayerwaddy River. The distance between Mandalay and Bagan is not actually far at all but the river is extremely shallow at many points. As if our boat wasn't slow enough, it needed to traverse (read: zigzag) from bank to bank for virtually the entire trip. Regardless, as the boat is only for tourists - we're probably the only people who could afford the $15 ticket - and there are hardly any tourists, the boat was empty outside of a handful of foreigners. It was a beautiful day and we were able to enjoy the riverside scenery and ... read more
