Asia » India » Orissa » Bhubaneswar May 18th 2006

Bhubaneswar is the capital of Orissa, a state in the east of India. It is a large spread city, where the centre is hard to find. The city starts to live when the sun goes down, and hundreds of people, riksjas and bikes are trying to find a way in the traffic. Very dangerous to cross the road, cause the pedestrian is the parasite of the traffic ( and nobody will cry if you die)... The spiritual centre once had more than hundred temples, but nowadays only a fifty left. We couldn't enter them all, cause some are exclusive for hindu devotees. The shape and style was completely different from the temples that I had seen before in the rest of South India. We also visited the two cavehills. Not so spectacular as the caves that ... read more

Was pleased to have arrived in Hue, away from the big city of Hanoi, it is much slower down here which is great for a change and we have really good accomodation in a really good location we don't have to wander more than about 100m and have the choice of about 6 restaurants/cafes. We decided to spend our first afternoon wandering around the old city, which, again is a world heritage site. We had to cross the river to get over to the old city and wandered up to the bridge, where a cyclo driver said "no, you can't cross the bridge" and he tried to point us to the other bridge 500m away from where we wanted to go, we were slighly sceptical of this and hung around and took a few photos until ... read more

KL is a confusing array of shops, the most fascinating includes computer plaza Imbi, where we discovered sleek Acer travel laptops goes for as low as RM1999 (SG$900). Also we made a mad rush for Bentley Music Store, a three storey array of music instruments and accessories before it closed at 7pm. Tfaduh was disappointed that he didn't see as much as he had hoped. The strings were apparently cheaper. He lauded them for their unique Fender basses, but the brand struck dispassionately with him. We discovered an art street behind Bukit Bintang, quaint rows of middle eastern shophouses and restaurants. I loved the colourful apartments. Number 8ight was a guesthouse we wanted to keep in mind, it was a quaint arty cosy looking place, very small, but perhaps like a boutique hostel, friendly staff and ... read more

Unbelievably, we missed the plane to Vietnam (Don't ask). So we're now trying to redeem ourselves by taking an unexpected trip to Thailand (Via Malaysia). We have the faintest idea on how we're going to get there, our emotions are of a volatile, dangerous nature. Right now, we're on a bus to KL. Tfaduh is still pretty pissed at our lack of forsight. Rage is the mood at the moment. ... read more

Dirty, dangerous, down-trodden, delicious, delightful, ductile, dinosaur, duck, drive, dish. Some of these are words that could be used to describe Bangkok. Others are just words beginning with D. Bangkok is an incredible place. Everywhere you look their is filth, rubbish and dogs with rabies but all that is starkly contrasted with glittering golden buildings that rise above the smog. We liked it so much that we decided to come back for a few more days after having visited it at the start of our time in Thailand. In between stays in Bangkok we were checking out some of those famous thai beaches on the islands. The best way to describe our stay in Thailand is that it was kind of like a sandwich, with Bangkok as the bread and beaches as the middle bit. Koh ... read more

We've been in Ko Pha-Ngan since the 15th. We are finally experiencing the rainy season. Having a great time, but more on that later... First, we must share our scam with readers in hopes that it saves someone else going through the same $#@! that we did...Apoligies for the negativity...I promise, its not long _________________________________________________ We booked our travel from Ko Lanta to Ko Pha-Ngan through a travel agent in Ko Lanta. This included two different mini-buses and a fast ferry. The mini-buses--a mini-van with 12 people squeezed in, thank goodness for the a/c-- were fine, we had a lot of waiting to do...two different car ferries, dropped off to catch our second bus where we were told it would be 45 minutes late, then the driver stopped at another place and told us "30 minutes". ... read more

BORNEO We flew into Sabah, Borneo on the 9th of April, its a stunning area of the world and we really loved it! Ben did some great dives in the marine park (TARP) off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, then we flew to Sandakan to see the Orang Utans. The Orang Utans were awesome we managed to see babies, teenagers, and older adults playing, feeding, swinging from the trees, play fighting and showing off their young. In the quieter afternoon session one mistook Ben for an Orang Utan (easy to do considering the hair style and beard!) So he jumped from the trees onto the viewing platform right beside us! They are sooo human like with facial expressions and mannerisms!! After the Orang Utans we were lucky to get a cancelation to go to Turtle Island ... read more

To whom it may concern, mainly Nige and Shawna: I am sorry about the appaling spelling, punctuation and grammar in all of my blogs. I can write in 'correct' english when I want to. However while away travelling I have to balance the tasks of keeping a blog, and actually doing the things I write about. This means I rarely if ever proof read, or even think about what I write. So shove your grammar up your nostrils (or something slightly ruder...). So to my final full day in Bali. After breakfast Suni took me to see his friend Alit Satria who is a painter and sculptor. We went to his home/studio and Alit showed me his extensive range of work which covered a number of styles from the traditional to modern. He has undertaken a ... read more

Ladies and Gents, boils and girls, here it is: The big update of my abuse of this life you've been waiting for... You've all been on the edge of your seats and dribbling due to the sheer pleasure of the wait I'm sure. Now here it comes, hold onto your genitals, there are somethings in here you may need them for. The toils and troubles of life simply washed away by a recent trip to Japan to collect my Korean visa have refreshed and rejouvinated my being. Full of energy and ready to assault your eyes again I prepare to actually give you an account of my doings rather than spitting random drivel. Here goes: One: As aforementioned, I had to make a run to Japan (such a pity) to collect my visa. There I managed ... read more

the bus ride from cambodia to the vietnamese border was interesting. the trip, already tainted by illness on dave's part was made worse by the fact that the radiator decided it was time for a massive leak. this left the driver and his friends with the task of fixing it, a job done by filling the gap with cigarette butts and sealing it with super glue. needless to say there were many more unscheduled stops along the way to add more water and further try to bodge the hole. much to everyone's surprise and relief the trusty cambodians limped us to the border where we crossed into vietnam. we were met by the people from "happy tours" who treated us to an incident free bus ride to saigon and the woman collecting the tickets even sang ... read more
