I got up for breakfast about 8, and was presented with the greatest breakfast table views I have ever had! The only better breakfast view I can think of came last summer in the alps, a piece of fruit cake scoffed down with Dan at the summit of Mont Blanc Du Tacil, but the fear of death and shivering probably made it slight less idyllic. I went back to bed hoping to sleep up ready for the nights climb, but with no luck. For lunch I went to the buffet at the hotel. Stocked up with carbs, I sat down to eat at my deserted table. I did wonder why there were 20 staff for maybe 3 customers. Then I found out. All of a sudden a coach arrived, then another, and another. Almost instantly the ... read more

G'day Folks! We know you're all hanging on every word that we write and just cant wait for another enthralling entry from the days of our lives.....so here tis!! Okay, apart from sleeping, eating, shopping, eating, walking, eating, moped riding, eating, swimming, eating and chatting with he-chicks, there's not really much to report back, so we thought we'd fill you in on a couple of un-written laws about how you should behave in a beachside resort.....for those of you playing at home. 1. If you're swimming in one of the numerous resort swimming pools and it starts to rain....get out immediately. Run for your lives, you dont want to get wet do you?!?!?! Seriously this is the case. As soon as it starts to rain, every aussie in the pool jumps out immediately and runs for ... read more

As the semester is coming to a close, this will be my final entry before I go galavanting around Japan with Bobby. Final exams are here - stressing just a little, but I thankfully lived past my Japanese oral exams. Instead of studying what feels like a few hundred vocabulary words, I decided to write an entry. Don't worry, I'll get to it sooner or later... Last week I discovered that my group member Max and I got second place in the simulated Japanese stock game I mentioned earlier in the semester... Over four months we had a 16% return on our portfolio... kind of sad - I had it at 26% but was lolo and messed up. But first place were the Germans of course with an amazing 34% return... actually, the two of them ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta May 16th 2006

We learned the hard way really not to trust the travel agencies here... Before leaving Phi Phi, we booked a bungalow at a resort in Ko Lanta based on a brochure and the "nice" woman. She said we were getting a low season deal. When we arrived we discovered a run down room and that we could've paid much less than we did. The price we paid for trying to do something "planned"! Kind of a bummer, but oh well. I was still in recovery mode so wee just chilled for a few days. Our resort has a small pool and was connected to one other place with a decent restaurant. Our beach was too rocky to do any swimming...another lie from the agent... Ko Lanta is definitely in the low season with few tourists and ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China May 16th 2006

From my last entry I reckon it was pretty clear I was quite bushed from my day in Beijing and on the whole it was unlikely there would be many things I'd be willing to get out of bed for the next day. Unfortunately however The Great Wall of China was on that list, we were setting off at 6am, so had to make the effort to drag myself down to the bus that morning. There was talk of a picnic so had stopped off the night before at a local conveniance store to buy provisions but found it not that conveniant at all. In my tiredness, (I'm never at my best when lacking sleep), I became quite frustrated that the shop sold bread but not butter, (scotching my hopes for Marmite sandwiches... was carrying a ... read more

hello everyone!! i finally have the internet back, after all this time. i feel like i regained a limb previously lost. a sad but try case of my dependance to the web. so, i have been up to quite a lot, and learning a lot about japanese culture. first, i would like to wish myself a happy birthday! i am now 25, and was feeling a little blue, not so much for getting older, but i think more for the passing of time; it was somehow quite sad to me. then i went to work this morning and was showered with gifts by all my beloved students. this may be a slight exageration, but i did get a few gifts from the students. i got a plant, some flowers, wine, a homemade cd with music i ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay May 16th 2006

Hi everyone! Well... a 16 hour bus ride later, and a long tail boat out to the Rai-leh penninsula, and we've officially arrived in Southern Thailand! The scenery is amazing -- it is the epitome of the white sand, green water beaches that typify Thailand. Only one day in the sun and I am already feeling like a totally different person than the stress-case, library bound student I was less than a month ago. Mark and I arrived in Rai-leh early yesterday morning after the grueling bus ride (the night train was already booked up, and we had to opt for plan B, a less than glamourous, not really air conditioned, terrifyingly driven coach all the way from Bangkok to Krabi-town.) The long tail boat ride out to the penninsula was really beautiful - through blue ... read more

The majestic Sun Temple at Konark is, like the Taj Mahal, one of India's signature buildings and Konark exists purely for it... The journey, a 56km only, took more than 2.5 hours in a local bus, but it was worth suffering for so long. It was really gorgious. For once we hired a guide who explained us lots of details. In the beginning very professionally, but after a while his explenations turned out in kama sutra expertise! " IF YOU DON'T MIND MADAM, SOMETHING FOR AFTER YOUR MARRIAGE"... heaps of inspiration, but most of them not really usefully... The guide ended with " Will you come back with your husband once?" ...... read more
