Today, May 18th, the weather is not very good. Very windy out and the clouds are grey. Today, we had planned to take a drive out to Shark Bay and check out the snorkeling there. We were told that Manna Rays, Reef Sharks, Great Barracuda, and Clown Fish were within view. Yesterday, we drove out to two different points of the island (South and East) and snorkeled there. Many beautiful coral and colorful fishies. It has been so much fun. Our daily regiment has been: up early, snorkel, back for breakfast (lots of fruit) and shower, go for a drive to another part of the island, snorkel, lunch, lay out, read, do some more exploring of the island (on our motorbike), and back for a shower and throw the frisbee around until dusk and the mosquitos eat us. The evenings have been nice, sunsets beautiful. Last night, stormy crouds and rain covered the island with torrential downpours. We were throwing the frisbee (I'm getting quite good and the throws, Don doesn't hardley have to run for them anymore. I'm trying for the behind the head catches and under the leg.) and watching the clouds roll in. Storms here move fast. Typically,
the storm will have passed and the sun out bright and hot after an hour or so of wetting the ground and watering the flowers! Today has been nice to catch up on travelblog stuff and just walk the town. It is not raining out, just gloomy and windy, roads damp from the last night's storm. The lightning shows have also been enjoyable. Lights up the sky quite nicely, great entertainment!
We have found a very nice bungalow with nice people and secluded here in Koh Tao. Sairee Beach is nice (not as clean as Koh Pha-Ngan), water is warm and fish are vibrant with color. The snorkeling is better here because the water is more clear and not as merky as before. Many large rocks under water that the pretty fish like to hover around.
My birthday was great! Early snorkel, then back for a shower, then off on the motorbike to venture to the East side of the island. Don had me learn how to drive our motorbike... You guys don't understand. This trip really has been the first time I have EVER been on a motorcycle (any two wheel motorized vehicle). I had three days of
riding on the back before I jumped in the cockpit. He just got off and said, "Okay, how your turn". I said, "No Thanks! I'm fine with just holding on." Regardless of the details, I drove. Kinda freaked me out the first time, not used to two wheels. I had to figure out the whole balance issue. Once I figured that part out, it was easy.
I drove back to town and parked for my birthday lunch. We shared some pizza and beers and walked around a bit. Don found a little bakery that said "Birthday Cake and Ice Cream". He was stoked, he didn't have to bake one himself now. We decided to come back for dinner and celebrate then. We took the rest of the afternoon exploring the island and snorkeling the day away. Dinner at a nice supposedly Mexican Restaurant "El Gringo". During dinner, the power went out in the island. There was a storm brewing in the distance and we had another beautiful light show with lightning and stormy clouds. They brought us out a candle, so we had a nice romantic candle-lit dinner in the darkness for a couple of minutes while we waited for
the power to come back on. It was nice! After, we tried to go to the bakery, but it was closed for the night. We continued to walk the town, just browsing around. We eventually got our bike and went for another drive. We found a new part of town we hadn't noticed before and found a new strip of life. We walked this area and did window shopping, neither of us really waned anything, however, we have been trying to keep our eyes open for new hats, but have been unsuccessful. We eventually found a 7-11 (about 5 or 6 of them on this small island), we both had a little ice cream to celebrate. Nice quaint little island, we found a picnic table and ate next to a big toad on the ground, he was very cute, as all creatures are on this island. We went back and watched the waves break on the beach and went in to wait for the sun to rise for a fresh new day. Yesterday, I got my little piece of birthday cake and scoop of ice cream. After our chicken sandwiches, the waiter brought dessert with candles and everything. Chances are my wish will come true as I got to blow out the candles and finish the afternoon with a snorkel, and I got to drive again... now Don wants to be chaufered everywhere we go. I really am enjoying driving this motorbike around. I need the practice, since Don got us each dirt bikes this past Fall that he's been fixing up for us to take with us on our many camping drips in the Nevada desert to rip around.
Looks like the weather is gettng better. Still a bit breezy, but we may venture out and go for a drive anyway.
Tomorrow, maybe out to Shark Bay, then next day take the ferry out to Ko Samui.
Hope everyone has been enjoying our trip as much as we have.
I have been able to put Don to some use on the computer, as I have been writing, he has figured out how to choose and place the pictures he likes onto the blogs, which is good, saves me tons of time, these computers seem to take forever with these pics. Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday... it was!
Hope everyone is healthy and happy. Jen and Don.
