Ive still got to add photos from Nha Trang - so we are jumping fprward to Ho Chi Minh city. As crazy with motorcycles as Hanoi - just as much fun crossing the road! Here, we visited the Cu Chi tunnels - the tunnels in which the Vietamese people dug & lived in during the war - amazing to see that they lived in this claustrophobic way - Justin & Neil went down into the tunnel but jo wasnt so stupid! Here we also got tto fire some AK47s which was good fun!... read more

First Sinh Cafe trip of probably many to come cos they are so cheap!!! Early morning starting off at the Sinh Cafe office where Mark and Bianca discovered the best croissants ever (apparently - I don't like them at the best of times!). We started off by dodging all the motorbikes in a very hectic ride on coach through town...that took about an hour or so until we got into skinny busy streets...but much better! We ended up stopping at a lacquer factory where they make these picture things. I was thinking it would be boring, mark was thinking it would be more than boring and bianca stayed on the bus. Happy to report though, that Mark and I were completely in love with a lot of the artwork they do. Making these amazing pics ... read more

Monday Nov 12 to Wednesday Nov. 14th “Good Mornin’ Vietnam! We’ve always wanted to say that. (thank you Robin Williams) Very hot here, about 33 degrees, and humid (so a very bad hair place, but great for things such as an $18 massage and $6 french manicure---that’s U.S dollars, so even cheaper in loonies)..Note to Michael and Harvey: see how much money we are saving?) Our base, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is in terrible disrepair. The French colonial influences are present, but the heart of the city lies not in it’s architecture, but in the Vietnamese people. They are a lovely, gracious, hospitable people who have suffered much. A most outstanding feature of HMC is the traffic chaos which is composed of some 2 million mopeds (the main method of transportation) all jumbled in ... read more

Once again we had to join in a package tour to get to a sight we were really keen to see. This time it was the elaborate tunnel system dug by the Viet Cong around the area of Cu Chi during the American war. The Sinh Cafe bus took us (via the standard curio market stop-off) to the area where we would have a morning tour of the underground network that was made up of 3 levels and 250km of incredibly narrow tunnels. Over 4 years 16,000 Viet Cong guerillas lived fought, and for 12,000 of them, died in the cramped, dark subterranean town. Despite the losses, the tunnels were so effective that they were apparently a major reason that the American troops were ultimately withdrawn from Vietnam. Several of the tunnels had been widened to ... read more

We set off at 8am for teh town of Cu Chi to see the informous tunnels for themselves. Again we were in tourist heaven but it was teh cheapest way to see as much as we wanted in the short space of time. It started like a school lesson and of course it was very VC prone, then we were walked around a path with mock areas of the tunnel set up. All quite mundane. Then horror of horrors we were taken to the firing range. Why on earth do people want to fire the same machinery which was responsible for killing millions?? The sound was deafing and the whole thing was made to be like a fun fair game. I was horrified. Eventually we we allowed down a 'real' tunnel. After the cue of watching ... read more

For the longest time, I have been trying to coax Lao-puo into keeping her own blog, because her perspective and style are both quite different from my own. She has been too busy, between the two waifs and her Chinese class, to do much writing. She finally relented and asked to do a chapter in mine. So. Here she is. "Doug and I had the most incredible weekend in Vietnam. We did all that we went to do. The only thing I'd ever go back for is a train trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi - a 30 hour trip. HCMC is insane. It's a city that never sleeps and during the day there is a sea of motor scooters on the road. Apparently, there are 5 deaths a day and many more injuries. ... read more

Good. (Yawn!) Morning.(Yawn!) Bill, our Intrepid leader, had assured us that there would be no need for alarm clocks in order to wake up. He wasn’t joking. Cocks were crowing, dogs were barking, chickens were clucking, boats were chugging away. I felt the door shake and rattle that gave ME a rude wake-up call at 05:30! I’m a light sleeper so going back to sleep was just not an option! The night before, I had slept in my clothes as I didn’t want to disturb my “dorm girls” and I must confess that I wasn’t sure that I hadn’t been locked out. No worries. I’d merely sleep with the boys! Fortunately or unfortunately, You decide! I was able to get into my room because there were no door locks! This morning, I had discovered that I ... read more

Ho Chi Minh is a bit more organised than Hanoi but the same principle of driving exist, did the usual city stuff haggled in the Ben Thanh Markets a huge place which had a big sign saying ''fixed price only" nothing is further form the truth in these places. Visited the war remnants museum, it’s mainly all pictures and it doesn’t hold back with its very graphic photo's of the war from the start to the finish, very interesting place. Next day we were Cu Chi tunnel bound via a religious temple, the terrible dirt track road was more memorable. The Cu Chi tunnels were class a huge network of tunnels which the local used to defend themselves during the war, hard to imagine how any soldier could crawl threw at speed. We were shown traps ... read more

The Chu Chi tunnels are supposedly 33km north of Ho Chi Minh City and were a definate on our list of places to visit. After haggling for a reasonable price with a couple of moto drivers, we hopped on the back and set off for the tunnels. Nothing had quite prepared us for the dense traffic of Ho Chi Minh and the journey was pretty terrifying! It turned out that our drivers had misled us in their confidence of knowing where the place was and we had to stop several times for directions. After having to swap Bex’s bike at the biginning, Dom’s broke down completely half way through the journey. His driver had to pay 70 000 dong to replace a part, which he later tried to charge Dom for, saying: “you were on the ... read more
