Dear Readers - Today and yesterday was a National Holiday in Viet Nam - Liberation and reunification of South and North Viet Nam. The holiday has been in existance since 1975 when the US pulled out of Saigon and the North took over the South. The flags flying are either the hammer and sickle on red or yellow star on red. Went shopping today for items that might be harder to find as we get to the interior and coastal areas. Internet connections may or may not be available as much as here in Saigon. The computers do not always have a USB port to download pictures so we apologize for that. Genuine imitation watches are for sale all over the place as well as imitation clothes, music, and videos, etc. Driving here is on the ... read more

I took a day trip to the Cao Di Temple and to Cu Chi Tunnels. The Temple is the main temple for the Cao Di religion, a religion mixing 3 other religions; Catholicism, Budhisim and Hinduism. The red, yeallow and Blue represent each religion (I know red is Catholicism but don't know the other 2). The Temple was colorfull and the cerimony beautiful. The Cu Chi tunnels are where the people in the south were fighting for the north and used them to move around and hide from the Americans, also set up many booby traps to catch the enemy. Had a great time and will be posting pictures from the Mekong Delta later. Doug ... read more

Huge day in the Nam, after a 7.30 start and a massive breaky we met up with tung and orlando on the bus and headed to the Cu Chi Tunnel. It was an intense place full of man holes, american traps and gun ranges. We all had the oppurtunity to fire some guns from the war, m16 m60 ak47's and colt 45s to name a few. then we hit the tunnels. What an experience! How the Viet Cong manged to live down there for the duration of the war is remarkable as the likes of ross found out. With a bit of encouragement nearly all of us got through and we finished with tea shots as we are getting use to in the Nam. Got attacked by sum more sellers as we went to the qite ... read more

The Cu Chi tunnel system is about 30km south of HCMC in the district of Cu Chi. This underground system of tunnels and rooms allowed the Viet Cong control over much of the area; within this one district an estimated 200 kilometers of tunnels provided security, of sorts, to the Viet Cong. The system included: hospitals, mess facilities, sleeping quarters and various other places from which the VC could continue operations against the American forces, including infiltrating Saigon. The entrance to the tunnel system might be a simple hole in the ground with leaves scattered over the top, almost impossible to find. American forces attempted to infiltrate the system using dogs and other means e.g. burning the forest down and searching for footprints in the ashes. Infiltrating the tunnels resulted in high casualties due to various ... read more

Hey all! Angela back here with the next exciting blog entry for you all! So...After an excellent time in Hoi An and Nha Trang,it was time to make our way to the final stop in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) & in true traveling style - yet another overnight bus was to be had! So after the purchase of our lovely new silk sleeping bags in Nha Trang minutes before the bus (in an attempt to avoid any more bed bug bites!) we boarded the bus & this time - admittedly upon my request - we were in the 3 front seats on the top row; we figured this could only be more airy & stench free than the back seat from the previous journey (honestly, talk about being near gased!) So off we headed...and ... read more

We arrived back in Saigon from Mui Ne late in the afternoon and checked into the same hotel we had stayed in for the last few visits to the city. Getting our suitcases that they had been holding while we have been off travelling around we got some clean clothes on and headed out into the madness for a spot of shopping and something to eat and for a change we decided to try some KFC since the last time we ate any junk food we were in New Zealand. After munching our way through a couple of bits of what we hope was chicken we couldn’t stop thinking why do people eat this crap and with the nice fresh food we have been eating over the last few weeks this made it taste like S@%T!! ... read more

Today we (the 2nd half of the Kids Building Hope crew) ventured to the Cuchi Tunnels. During the ride there, we absorbed information about the Vietnam War courtesy of our tour guide, Mr. Bin. Mr. Bin fought for Southern Vietnam during the war. (Up until today, I thought the Vietnam War was between the whole country of Vietnam vs. America for some unknown reason.) Also on the way we saw miserable conditions of the people in the rural areas. Part of us wanted to look away because it was too hard to see how lowly these people lived, but the other side wanted to look to see how lucky we are. Then after a very bumpy 2 1/2 hour bus ride we arrived at the Cuchi Tunnels. There we continued our education of the Vietnam War ... read more

Tuesday March 18th I'm writing this at 2:30am after a very exhausting day -- I think we were all in bed and asleep by 8:30pm. I woke up and thought I'd better write the days events down -- before I forget. We toured the CuChi Tunnels today 25 miles outside of Ho Chi Minh City (though most people we speak to still call HCMC " Saigon"). Our tourguide's name was Mr. Bin. He was a soldier for Southern Vietnam during the American/Vietnam War fighting alongside the Americans. During our trip through the crowded streets -- this time by bus -- Mr. Bin discussed the history of Vietnam and the hardships of the Vietnamese people due to the constant struggle for independence from France, Japan, North vs. South and China. He explained the eventual price that he ... read more
