Monday 25th June Well, where have the past twelve months gone? This time last year I was setting off for my first trip to Vietnam to participate in the orphanage volunteer program. That time was very rewarding so much so, I wanted to return. I was up at 4.00am and heading to the Canberra airport - temperature was 0 degrees. After a slight delay due to an "ice" problem with the plane flew to Sydney. After the customs and immigration formalities I boarded my Vietnam Airline flight for Ho Chi Minh City - an hour late - 11.15. Finally in the sky and the flight was a very smooth one. Arrived in HCMC at 5.30 - Vietnam is 3 hours behind Australia ! Collected my 41 kgs. of luggage and wondered whether my internet bookings ... read more

The Holy See was founded in 1926 in Tay Ninh Province in South Vietnam. The complex is enormous and houses amongst other things, The Cao Dai Great Temple. A mystic called Ngo Minh founded Cao Daism; he studied both eastern and western religions and was a great communicator with "the other side". The Cao Dai religion is a mixture of Buddhism, Taoism and also has some Confucian influences, followers of the religion believe in one god, the existence of the soul and communication with the spirit world. Spirits who have been in touch with the Cao Dai include Joan of Arc, William Shakespeare and Victor Hugo. Most of the Cao Dai’s literature has been communicated to its leaders in seances. Both men and women can become clergy but only the men are allowed to make ... read more

No, the title of today's entry doesn't designate the fruitful procreation of our dedicated band of bachelors, in fact Stace bemoaned the lack of sex in a colorful lunchtime rant. What can one expect when sharing a room with 2 other chaps? We're too old to tie a hanky to the door handle. No, the title alludes to our insertion into the narrow confines of the Cu Chi tunnels today, a boggling experience illustrative of Charlie's diminuitive stature and guerilla prowess. The tour was narrated by the colorful veteran "Mr Bean" and his unique perspective on service with the South Vietnamese / Americans during the war, which among other corrections he asserted lasted 125 years. To Mr Bean's point of view was added a propaganda ridden archive movie demonising the American (pronounced here to rhyme with ... read more

Now I hate guided tours and everything about them - being herded into buses, only having set times in places and having to listen to the guide go on and on..... So what do we do, we booked a day tour to see the Cao Dai temple and the Củ Chi tunnels (Wikipedia's article linked here is great) . As we have no means of transport ourselves, and there is no way I would get on a moped here, this was the only way to see these as they are about 75km out of Ho Chi Minh. The journey out to the cathedral, heading northwest out of Saigon on Highway One, is lined with pancake flat paddy fields and farmland. Its' present day tranquillity belies the ferocious fighting experienced here during wars of previous decades. ... read more

Rebonjour a tous!

Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is now known, proved to be a great city for us as we had a very enjoyable 3 days here. On the history side of things we have visited the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Remnants Museum. The Ch Chi Tunnels was very interesting and something I had been looking forward to ever since our round the world trip had been planned. Having researched the tunnels in the past it was great to actually be here and see how ingenious the Vietnamese really were. The tunnel network became legendary during the 1960's, for its use by the Viet Cong. The tunnel system stretches from Saigon to the Cambodian border, and there was over 250km of tunnels. To think that they lived in these tunnels for weeks, ... read more

MOVED Today is the day we stood face to face with history. Moments like these are so intense that they shake my soul. The most profound of these moments was in the summer of 2000 when I visited Cape Coast Castle in Ghana. My mind was blown away as I toured this one time slave castle, looking out of the “Door of No Return” and envisioning the journey of my ancestors involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Standing in the male dungeon, two levels below the church and wondering to what God those satanic slave drivers prayed to. A similar, but less profound experience occurred when I visited Anne Frank’s House in Amsterdam. In both situations, I could even still feel the wickedness surrounding those events about me. The only difference is that this time, my ... read more
