Gooooood Morning Vietnam!!! There's the cheesy crap outa my system. the guesthouse was the easiest to reach yet, well the dorm room was at the top of the building up ten flights of stairs! to start off the traffic in Saigon is properly hectic crossing the road risks life and limb as rules don't seem to apply as millions of moto bikes swerve and beep there way past each with between 1-4 people on, every now and again a pig or two aswell, all trying to get somewhere as fast as possible, pavements are basically extensions of the road right? went to dinner with a french guy at the market which was alright, the ice cream was awesome tho even if it was more expensive than our meal & a beer. the next day it was ... read more

Well, we made it to Vietnam and so far our ecperience has been wonderful. Our hostess at the hotek is the sweetest person I have ever met and really helped us get our bearings here. We arrived in the evening so we went out to dinner and a few cocktails. As we were leaving the restaurant I noticed a little art shop across the street adn I wanted to check it out. Steve and I went in to look around and a gentleman came out to ask us where we were from. When I said America he got very excited and pointed around the corner, there was two other Vietnamese men and a young American sitting around a table enjoying a few Saigon beers. They offered us a chair and the friends of the other guy ... read more

Mr. Phuong is my English teaching friend from HCMC. He is quite the friend. I met him as I was bicycling down a Saigon street. He pulled up beside me on his motorbike and said: "If you would just stop at that pub ahead, I'll buy you a beer if you talk English with me. I don't like beer but I stopped anyway. I guess that was the start of our friendship, doing things neither one of us finds all that interesting just to be with someone who is interesting. Mr. Phuong is an English teacher, public and private. He is an excellent musician on a number of instruments. He composes songs. He leads a band. He started his married life past forty but now has a beautiful wife and two beautiful children. His Mother speaks ... read more

Hello again and welcome to part two of my Saigon Tourist tour. After the beauty and peace of Tay Ninh temple it was time to head to Cu Chi Tunnels. The journey took about 1 hour and 15 minutes, but the roads were a lot worse. Bouncing along the road, I was glad once we arrived at our destination. Construction of the tunnels begain in the 1940's as a response by the peasants to the superior military strength of the French. They reached legendary status during the American War (I like how it is known as the American War by the Vietnamese) though, allowing the Viet Cong to retain control of the area despite constant attack. Cu Chi had become a free fire zone, little or no authorisation was required to bombard the area. US Bombers ... read more

Woke up early again had a lovely breakfast and left on boat and then bus towards the Cu Chi tunnels. Cu Chi is a city which has lots of tunnels left over from the war. There is a huge network of tunnels which were tiny inside and have hidden entrances. Here is a photo of me in one of them. There were huge bomb craters everywhere. Then were taken to the shooting range where we could try and shoot a gun. The sound walking towards the range made me jump, it was so loud. Standing near the gun I had to use earplugs and headphones to attempt to ease the sound, it was painfully loud. I had to close my eyes when I pulled the trigger as I was so scared. My legs were shaking it ... read more

I took a tour out of Saigon to the main Cao Dai temple in Tay Ninh and to the Cu Chi Tunnels. OK, Cao Dai is an amalgam of Buddhist, Hindu and Catholic religions. They have three saints: Ton Dat Tien (Chinese revolutionary), Nyguyen Binh Khiem (Vietnamese poet) and Victor Hugo. Very strange. The temple was gorgeous and the service was interesting. The ritual, clothing, music and oddity of the whole thing was worthwhile. The Cu Chi tunnels were an amazing network of passages and shelters used by the Viet Cong outside of Saigon. They could protect themselves from the intense American bombing and organize counter attacks without being seen. The tunnels were incredibly narrow andair was very limited. The conditions they were able to live in and how effective this primitive method was at combating ... read more

More war tourism today. I'm not sure how to feel about going to these places. I feel slightly uncomfortable being a voyeur of such violent events yet I feel i need to see and pay my respects. I don't think it's a bad thing to remind ourselves how awful war is. The Cu Chi tunnels are 60 k away from Saigon, a region around the village of Cu Chi where the Viet Cong lived and fought from tunnels underground to keep control of the area. Whatever people think of the war and of the Viet Cong it can't be denied that it's an incredible feat of engineering and determination to live in such conditions. They dug the tunnels by hand, sometimes three levels deep, some tunnels large enough to walk crouched through but most too small ... read more

We figured we had to do at least one tourist thing in Vietnam while Chuck was here. We decided to do the Cu Chi Tunnels and the caodai temple. The Cu Chi tunnels are the underground tunnels the Vietcong used to escape from the b-52 bombs and sneak up into the U.S. Army camps and set traps. The people wound up living underground and their is a complex network of tunnels about 200 or more kilometers or tunnels. They let you go underground and crawl through these tight tunnels about 20 feet undergound. Most who know me know how much I love small confined spaces so that was a bit interesting. I admit I was not happy at all about the thought of crawling 200 or so feet underground in a tiny tunnel. I did it, ... read more

New mozzie bites: hmm 4 I think New friends made: 1 german women travelling alone, three Danish girls on their way to Cambodia and an English woman moaning about the heat (no that wasn't me!) AK47's fired: none! Back on the 'air con' bus which I swear is only about two degrees cooler than outside and on to the Cu Chi tunnels. This place holds massive significance for the southern Vietnamese as it's where the guerilla fighters of the Viet Cong captured, massacred and generally tried to overcome the Americans during the war. Not armed with anything comparable to the bombs being dropped on them or the AK-47s being shot at them they dug themselves out of harm's way. Literally. The area is home to miles of tunnels, three levels deep (around 9m the deepest) where ... read more
