And I'm back! So it's been what, three weeks since I left you hanging after my Yunnanese escapade. As I mentioned, I haven't gone far. It was just another trip back down to the Hekou-Lao Cai border with Vietnam (no 3h traffic jam this time though, thank goodness), followed by another 9h bus ride to the storied northern capital of Hanoi. And I've been here ever since. Why the long stay, you might ask. Well after the few days I'd spent here last year (in addition to the couple of times I'd visited even before, in the past), I developed the inkling to plan for a slightly more extended stay, just to explore the city in greater depth, like I've done for Bangkok in Thailand. So here I am. But this entry isn't about Hanoi. To ... read more

I have to say that at the time we were booking a bus to Ninh Binh I had some serious doubts whether we would be back on time from Halong Bay to catch it on the same day. After all we had only 1 hour between being dropped off at the office and catching a bus further on. And so far I don’t think any of the buses (or trains) we travelled with in South East Asia arrived on time at their destination…. So I was more than surprised when we arrived at the tourist office in Hanoi right on time! We would be able to get to Ninh Binh on the same day after all! Happy days! :) It was supposed to be only 2 hour journey to Ninh Binh which only made me think ... read more

Today was a good day. I had my own personal motorbike driver to take me round the main sights of Nimh Binh. First being Tam Coc. This is the Ngo Dong River that runs through mountains and natural caves. It was cheaper for 2 people to go in a rowing boat and luckily there was a guy from New Zealand waiting at the paying booth. I didn't mind sharing. So we got in our rowing boat where a Vietnamese man rowed us down the river with his feet. It was so impressive. The sun was out and my surroundings were pretty amazing. We got to a point where there were many ladies in boats selling drinks and snacks. I was warned about this. They asked us to buy a drink for our rowing guy so I ... read more

The Hanoi bus driver found me a car with 5 other Vietnamese people in to take me to another bus station to get the bus to Nimh Binh. I found the local bus and waited for it to leave and of course it didn't leave on time. I sat next to a lady who halfway through the journey shared her corn with me (as in the vegetable) just to make clear. I didn't know where I was getting off and generally thought I'd be going to a local bus station. I pointed out where I was going in my lonely planet and all the locals started talking amongst themselves. The driver stopped and told me to get off as I was here. However, it was literally the side of the road. A guy with a motorbike ... read more

And so there stood the American, upon the soil that the Americans had so tragically enriched with ash, ‘what are you to make of your legacy here?’ I pondered to myself. And where even was the rubble, had this war been a thousand years ago - where were all the people, the victims, the sad and weary peasants starved and bombed out? Well the wounds are still here, so deeply ingrained that many visitors can walk the streets with barely a notice given, but Vietnam has changed and if you aren’t one for facts, figures and the like, then allow me to bear witness personally on your behalf. Ninh Binh is a reflection of your average American city, albeit a small one whose residence are slightly younger and more commercially oriented, mind you - but if ... read more

Vietnam is truly a beautiful place. I may make fun of it sometimes for being a bit too dirty and I may make jokes about how they can fit 10 people on a motorbike, but there really are not many places in the world where you can see such beautiful mountains and waters together at the same time. While traveling to Hanoi this time around, my great-uncle took my family and their friends (total of 15 people) on a mini guided tour of one of the most interesting places that I have been to; Trang An - The lake of a thousand caves. The lake of a thousand caves probably isn't its correct name, but I couldn't find a translation anywhere on the Chinese Google so i'm going to name it myself for the time being. ... read more

I went to Ninh Binh with Linda, whom I met in a homestay in Sapa. We found a hotelroom, where we bargained a lot for the price, but it was not worth it, not even at the price, we ended up paying, since it wasn't a nice room, the toilet door couldn't close, it smelled and the lady, wholived there, kept touching my face and shoulders, which was really weird. The next day we rented some bicycles and went to the "Tam Coc cave", where we enjoyed the amazing scenery from a boat. the landscape was quite similar to "Ha Long Bay", except fr the fact that there down here weould be rice on each side of the boat during the rainy season. But even without the green rice on both sides it was a beautiful ... read more

16 November to 19 November 2012 – The photographer and I got a bus from Hải Phòng city to Nho Quan town, then we hired a taxi to Cúc Phương national park (182km in total). The taxi driver was a military doctor who owned a private car. As he knew I was worried about leeches, he gave me medicine.and cotton which can help me stop bleeding in case of leech bite. Actually, these leeches only appear during the wet season and now it’s very rare to see them, but it rained the night before we went to the jungle, so I had to be careful. Cúc Phương national park is located 120km southwest of Hanoi. I went to this park 16 years ago, but the road inside the jungle was under construction at the time, so ... read more

After a brilliant few days in Cat Ba, we decided to carry on south to the small town of Ninh Binh, a journey which was supposed to take just 4 hours. Of course it took longer; we were on a hot, cramped bus loaded with big boxes so there was no room, and it kept stopping every few minutes to get locals on; at one point it did a detour to pick up some extra tyres were loaded onto the roof, and we finally got to Ninh Binh over 6 hours later Ninh Binh is not a pretty town, but most people come here to explore its scenic surroundings rather than stay in the town, which is what we intended to do as well, so after we found a hotel for the night we sorted out ... read more

We had similar bus/boat/bus transportation from Cat Ba to Ninh Binh that was just as simple/complicated and again took about 5 hours. As usual we were swarmed getting off the bus by men encouraging us to stay at their hotel. We had accepted the card of a guy who strategically hopped on the bus a while before it stopped at the station and headed right for Queen Mini Hotel. For $8/night we got a great spacious room with a balcony, AC, wifi and clean bathroom. It would be perfect for the one night we wanted to spend in Ninh Binh. There isn't anything too spectacular about the city itself, but the surrounding area has some of Vietnam's top sites. We knew exactly what we wanted to see and do and immediately started asking around to compare ... read more
