I got picked up at 10.30 today for the Tam Coc tour. It's just north of Ninh Binh. Otherwise known as Halong Bay on land. Firstly we arived in Hao Lu, the ancient capital and the remaining two temples òf the kings. We then got a small river boat to take us along the river, which has a really scenic landscape surrounded by rice paddies and limnestone karsts. We went through the 3 caves, hang ca, hai and ba, the largest being 125m long and the cave ceiling about 2m above water. It took about 1.5hr to do the return trip and it was amazing! We were rowed by a vietnamese lady who used her feet to row. She made it look so easy! Before this we had a buffet lunch to get to know everyone ... read more

Day 19 - More school Another early start, they start at 7.30 here! I went to buy a ream of paper to go with the wax and pencil crayons, although we have not worked with the same classy twice! The class today went much better today. We managed to get to number 10 today. We finished off by having a dink at the Internet cafe. After lunch, more rice, fried chicken, bean shoots and peanuts!!, Britty, Hannah, Nadia, Beckey, Me and Kevin went on a bike ride. It was quite funny because we hired the bikes for about 40k vnd, but they arrived individually......with their owners! ...LOL. We set off to the fisherman's house. It is amazing how simply they live! In a bamboo shack on stills; yet they are so proud. They were very welcoming, ... read more

Day 17 Giao Xuan Woke up today at 6am. It was all quiet, except for the continual down pur of rain, and I could hear Mrs Tsin working away outside. The poor woman never stops! I got up and sat outside, the woman is a work machine. We have a shower rota, which I am at the end of, so I am just sat watching the world, (Mrs Tsin) go by until my turn! To day we are going on a country walk because the school is closed, I can't see it happening to be honest! This morning I was moved into a room on my own, due to my age! I am sure everyone else will be very happy due to my snoring!! Which I fully understand, but it does make me feel solitary at ... read more

Day 18 - School and kindergarten kids We are actually in Nam Dinh, but it isn'tlisted in the options! I had a good nights sleep last night. I was gutted that the Internet was down, as it makes the job so much harder when you are on catch up! I was up at six am, sat watching Mrs Tsin, who is a cleaning machine. The woman never stops, even when it seems like she has finished sweeping and swilling the yard....she starts it all again! Off to school at eight this morning, teaching basic greetings in English. The kids today are a bit older than yesterday, it seemed to go well. I do tend to go to the back of the class rather than at the front. I guess it is because of the draw to ... read more

Day 13 Up late last night doing blog, but that's ok as I was clean and comfy! We had thick stodgy looking pancakes for breakfast. I was considering passing on it, but considered anything was better than nothing! So I tucked in. To my utter delight, I found pineapple in it! This made me very happy, the stodginess w explained by the total lack of egg! Yes, they do not use egg or flour in the pancakes. Your guess is as good as mine as to what they do use, but this was also good news for Lilley. She has not eaten the pancakes due to not eating eggs; she can now have them with the rest of us. Today was a bit of a 'bus' day. We are going to a church and a temple. ... read more

Day 12 We had a bad night for mozzy bites last night; so far, and it is only 7am..... Nadia, Ben and myself have been attacked in the night. Today we are going Ninh Binh town. We have been in the province earlier, but this is our first time in the town itself. We will be staying in a proper hotel! We are all really looking forward to a proper shower again. The cold, feeble excuse for a shower really doesn't cut it! The National park has been another good experience, but one I will be pleased to move forward from! Breakfast started off by looking promising. Fruit...at last, but no .....it was cucumber, nice bread, and yet again....one omlette between 6 people! We are counting down to leaving! The ride back to Ninh Binh was ... read more

Day 11 We had a good nights sleep lat night. This morning for breakfast we got pancakes......yayyyy....we all thought.....but then that was it, just pancakes, dry, with nothing to go on them. Lilley did manage to get us some sugar which really improved the situation. Although I was still hungry from last night, the single pancake really didn't suffice! We set off on the 3k trek through the forest/jungle to see the 700 yr old tree. It is a good job that no one relies on Kevin, as we noticed that Renske had been left behind, he didn't! What a disappointment, the tree isn't even standing! The walk was pleasant though. We all took plenty of pictures of bugs, spiders, caterpillars and butterflies. None of us saw much of Kevin, he was having a party on ... read more

Day 10 Today we are setting off for another cave. Rather a cave than another pagoda, I think I am all pagoda - ed out right now! We are going toVan Trinh Cave. It is said to be one of the most beautiful caves around here, again! But to be fair, they really are phenomenal! Hmmm...that was a strange decision to have to make....what to have in my cold fried egg sandwich ....frozen cream cheese, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce...or sugar!! Other than that, breakfast done...ready for the day. We set off along the Song Hoang Long river to the Van Trinh Cave. This cave is also called Giang Tien cave. It is located in the Mo Mountain, Van Trinh hamlet, Thuong Hoa commune, Nho Quan district, Ninh Binh province. The cave is nearly 3500 sq ... read more
