Day 9 Buddism Another day, another pagoda, but today we are going to see the largest pagoda of all! We took a short bus ride to Non Nuoc Bai Dinh Pagoda...... It rose up into a hill over three stages. Very impressive! We were taught by Tingh what we should say and how many bows etc. he discussed all about Buddhism, and the ways of the religion. This pagoda is a popular place in Ninh Binh for Buddhism. In particular, the temple has a bronze statue of Buddha in Vietnam's largest piece - 6.5 m high, weighs 30 tons. After the long walk in the heat of the day, even though we were well shaded, we were all hot, sweaty, and starving! We returned on the bus to our hotel for our final lunch there. We ... read more

Day 8 Today is another free day as it is Sunday. There were two choices that we came up with; some wanted to swim in a pool at a local hotel, and some didn't. I was with the ' did nots' as I felt, although I could seriously just dive into a lovely clean blue pool, I also think there is more to see, and I would rather do it whilst I have the chance. After breakfast the 'poolers' set off. The other group, which were; Amberlee, Roisin, Britty, Nadia and myself, hired bikes to go to Trang An caves/ grottos. The bike ride there took us through small typical Vietnamese villages. Most of the locals are very friendly and pleased to shout, hello, as we pass by. Some are obviously aware of the paleness of ... read more

Day 7 Today the breakfast just didn't seem to be enough! Bread, bread, and more bread! I felt like that about the eggs previously, now, I would really enjoy a scrambled egg.Today is a free day. We have made a group decision to hire bikes and go to Hang Mua, otherwise known as the dancing cave. We hired bikes for journey. It does cause a stir when a group go 17 white skinned Europeans go cycling by. The bike ride was good fun, not too hard and the weather was not too hot. We arrived at the foot of the cave. OMG! It is huge. It is very impressive with a small grove of trees, but the main attraction is the pagoda at the top. It is a simple alter to Quan Am who is the ... read more

Day 6 Bread and pineapple jam, or laughing cow cheese spread for breakfast..... Simple but pleasant. Today we all hired bikes for a ride to see the Thai VI temple which is located in a big valley of Van Lam hamlet, Ninh Hai Commune. The Van Lam villagers had built Thai Vi temple to remember the Kings of Tran Dynasty for establishment of Vu Lam Royal step-over in 1258 after the kings passed away. It was a real breeze on the bikes; both literally, and metaphorically! We had a short lesson on the procedure of presenting yourself in front of the kings; bowing 3 times in a temple, and 4 times in a pagoda. You then, in your head, say your name, address and the date, then add your wish. We all participated in this. It ... read more

Day 5 Here we go again! Really didn't sleep well last night; just tossing and turning, and so was Renske, then up at eight for more scrambled egg and bread. My back pack weighs so much more than I remembered! We set off on a very respectable small bus for the two hour journey to Ninh Binh. We are staying in a nice hotel, which was a welcome surprise! I got a room on my own with a double bed AND a fridge, which I have VERY kindly agreed to share with Nadia and Britty. I think Thành gave it to me as he has an inate respect for older people...LOL We had a really good lunch which was a bit of a shock at first; goat, rice, an unrecognisable veg, a chicken and a tofu dish. ... read more

Yesterday we set off early from our hotel to catch a train at 8.30am. The train station was heaving yet luckily a friendly security guard showed us exactly where to stand on the platform to ensure we got in the right carriage. The platform was ridiculously long and people were walking all over the tracks as well as driving their mopeds across them as the tracks were platform level. Once the train arrived it was a bit of a crush but our huge backpacks managed to fend of anyone wanting to overtake us! As soon as we stepped onto the train all eyes were on us! We found our seats and settled in for the 14 hour journey. The train was quite tatty but comfortable enough and luckily the seats reclined. The scenery was great so ... read more

So our day began at 6.45 again, we packed up our bags and checked out of the Hostel. We then got a taxi to the bus station with the aim of getting a bus to Cuc Phuong National Park, a 3 hour drive south. In reality, we ended up at the wrong bus station on the wrong bus! No one at the bus station could speak English so trying to explain our destination, ask which bus, what time it leaves and how to buy tickets was very problematic. In the end we were shepherded onto an old, dirty rickety bus. Struggling onto the bus with our day bags, litre water bottles and our backpacks whilst it was moving proved to be hilarious for the locals already on the bus! Although we sat down at the back ... read more

We took the night train from Hue to Ninh Binh a day late, due to a mixup with our tickets. Not a problem, as we’d scheduled a “no-activities” day in the middle of our NB plan. We’ve talked to many tourists who said, “Ninh Binh? What’s there?” and had to tell them that they might want to miss the beach at Nha Trang, but they should NOT miss Ninh Binh. We stayed at the Ngoc Anh hotel and understand why the recommendations we read were so strong. It is family-run and one of the friendliest places we’ve been in this friendly country. The father is happy to help and very ready to do whatever’s needed, the mother hugged us every time she saw us, and the daughter (an English teacher) came to give me a neck ... read more
