On November 4th we jumped on a plane and left HCMC bound for Phu Quoc Island. Intimidate after landing we were mobbed by taxi cab drivers and scooter rental guys. We had not reserved a hotel and had planed on wing it and checking different places out. The constant questioning from the airport cab drivers made our indecisiveness frustrating. All we wanted as a moment of peace so that we could could gather our thoughts and develop our attack plan. After much discussion we decided to take a cab and head towards Tropicana Resort. Turns out Tropicana resort is closed for renovation. Things were not looking good. Taxi cab driver took us down the road a bit to another "resort" if you could call 10 bungalows a resort. Cuong and I checked the room at the ... read more

6th - 9th October 2010 Phu Quoc Island Wednesday morning came too early for some of us - one very sick boy (self inflicted though!). Upstairs to the restaurant we went for omlette and bacon before it all came back up again for Chris.... Anyway, onwards and upwards we went. Managed to catch a cab to the airport and find the domestic terminal. We found Vietnam Airlines ok and were bumped on to an earlier flight to Phu Quoc Island. Chris stepped onto the plane and straight into the toilet to have another look at his breakfast! Anyway, we landed on Phu Quoc and were standing around waiting for our bags when Chris saw his name pop up on a computer screen for the hotel we were staying at. We splurged a little at Phu Quoc ... read more

I left Nha Trang on the 17th of june, took a plane for Saigon, spend one night there and in the morning I flew to Phu Quoc. A local vietnamese guy told me that everything should be done by 2020! So i'm glad I had the chance to explore the Island before all the tourists :) And it was low season. Donc ... read more

After the Mekong Delta Trip I spent 5 days on this small Island in the Gulf of Thailand called Phu Quoc. It was fantastic. The island is a tourist paradise. It is not very well developed yet - predominately small resorts and dirt or gravel roads - but the beach is fantastic and not crowded at all. I didn't have a reservation, so after a ferry ride on the SuperDong 2 ( The currency up here is the Dong, not sure what they meant when they called the boat that ), I got a minibus to take me and a Dutch couple I befriended to find us a place to stay. They found us a fantastic place with beach bungalows right on the sand overlooking the water, all for $13 a night. What a deal. These ... read more

We jump on two motorbike taxis when we get off the boat - lucky thing too as it the pier we're dropped at the end of is half the distance of the journey! It is the end of the dry season so boats can't come in very far. All going swimmingly until I realise, as the roads get worse and worse, that my driver may be bouncing a little more than necessary when we go over bumps and is edging further and further back on the bike! Then I start to get a whiff of alcohol from his breath! By the end I am being pretty much reverse dry-humped by a small, old, drunk Vietnamese man. At the end of our 20-odd km drive, Xan sees by the look on my face that something's up and ... read more

Vietnam 9 - 28 March 2010 Part I - Hanoi Ola & I arrived in Hanoi after spending a very warm nite in KL =) to our dismay, the pilot of our Air Asia flight announced that it was 16degs in Hanoi! sick of being cold from Japan we frowned but knew we only had to stick it out a bit longer b4 we're in warm climates again! We arrived at the airport like important business 'men' with a driver waiting for us holding our names up on cardboard! hehe... lifelong dream #112 ACHIEVED! hehe... Our lovely host Eva (ozzie expat living/working in Hanoi for 2yrs) was kind nuf to arrange this driver for us & to welcome us into her lovely '7star' apartment just outside the city centre =) this was already looking tres bien! ... read more

So, after our last entry we, the Kiwis, and Steph (representing France) went to Battambang which continued to be unspeakably hot. Our room was actually 36.5 degrees at night. Needless to say, we paid the $2 extra and upgraded to an air conditioned room. It was glorious. Heat aside, we saw some neat stuff there, including a cave where the Khmer Rouge killed people, and the fabulous bamboo train. The train consists of a platform of Bamboo sitting upon two axles that ride on the train track. The rear axle is rigged to a small engine that propels the whole contraption down the line at slightly disturbing speeds. It was awesome, and we had a blast. We then all went back to Phnom Penh, and spent a final night together before parting ways. The next morning, ... read more

Lazy aren't I? It has been far too long since my last entry and legitimately I can only blame my indolence on stunning beaches, blazing sunshine and lots of fun. Of which, if you look at the photos from this wonderful island, you hopefully get a flavour. After the mania of Saigon (which our cab driver explained is the old school and much preferable name for Ho Chi Minh City that he and all of the older lads still use) we needed a break. Travelling through Vietnam had to be done at breakneck speed, so once we landed in Phu Quoc we decided to chill for four days. We found a nice little hotel right on the beach, which offered a clean room for a relatively reasonable $20 a night. No air con or hot water, ... read more

Byen hedder hue. vi ... read more
