Alone for the first time in a month I headed off to Phu Quoc Island to get off the beaten track. It provided me with some of the most amazing and memorable experiences of my whole trip. On my way there I had to get a mini-bus with only Vietnamese people. It was a strange feeling being the only westerner that I saw for over a day of travelling. It was a role reversal to be in the minority and I was definately getting a few strange looks. On my way there I met a really great Vietnamese Guy and we chatted all through the night about Vietnam, Ireland, dreams and aspirations. When the trip came to an end he handed me a present that he had bought in the market. It was some moon cake, ... read more

Dreaming of an adventure like ours? Find out how we did it at JulieAndDariansWorldTourGuide.com Phu Quoc Island, 19-21 Feb 2008 Here is a place where we really feel on holidays. Everything seems a million miles away and there’s nothing here but zen. We’ve heard this place compared to Phuket 20 years ago, and it’s difficult to see it any other way. Writing this, I feel caught in a dilemma, because I want to write so many good things about it, but I feel that the less the world knows about it the better. But that would be selfish. Certainly, it is the sort of place that I’d love to come back to again, when next I feel like a cheap beach holiday. Maybe we were lucky to arrive after the crowds have moved on, but we ... read more

We had a lovely week in Phu Quoc with Geoff and Adi. Both of them met us in Ho Chi Minh City and fortunately for me, Geoff and I flew to the island. Lou and Adi took the cheaper option - an overnight bus ride to Rach Gia which dropped them at the ferry point at 3am, where they had a lovely, restful 3 hour sleep at the ferry point on some concrete benches, fighting off the mosquitoes! If that wasn't enough of an introduction to travelling in Vietnam for Adi, they then had a really rough ferry crossing where she spent the whole journey throwing up. There had been a typhoon in the South China sea which was causing a lot of turmoil. The one good part of the journey were their fellow passengers - ... read more

To get to Phu Quoc we had to take a bus down to the port of Rach Gia which we were told by the travel agent would take 6 hours. When the bus arrived one and a half hours late it was a small local mini bus and it was packed. We think we may have got our wires crossed with another bus we were booking at the same time into Cambodia. So after a few gripes and Tim rufusing to sit on a drop down seat for 6 hours (subsequenly local guys were asked to move) we set off. It wasn't comfortable but it was okay. I ended up with the wheelarch and therefore sat with my knees up around my bloody neck. Tim has a guy keep fall asleep on his shoulder!! The journey ... read more

After the Mekong Delta tour we found ourselves in a town called Rach Gia. It didn't have any proper western style restaurants so we ate at a food stall surrouned by tiny plastic chairs and tables. We were clearly the only westeners that have been there for a long time because the Vietnamese men kept offering Rich sips of their beer and both of us some of their food! It was very odd. The next day we arrived at Phu Quoc Island on a suprisingly modern hydrofoil and could see the island was stunning. After getting a motorbike 30km on dusty, rocky dirt roads (not good for your spine or your bum) we came to a stretch of small resorts and found ourselves a bungalow. It was beautiful; white sand and crystal clear water, just like ... read more

It’s Relax Times! We arrived on Phu Quoc Island with a microdot of patience left in our reserves. We’d had a spectacularly crap travel day - a series of non-existent pick-ups, missed bus connections, manhandling ferry touts, unnecessary waits, suicidal moto riders and ticket rip offs. Needless to say after a two and a half hour ferry ride, sitting top-deck with the animals, smokers and sea spray (as opposed to indoors in the air-con) we were damp, tired and happy to go with the first tout to approach us. After being on the road for almost three months, we thought we knew how things worked in Vietnam. You get off a bus, boat or train and there will be a gaggle of touts from hotels and guesthouses ready to whisk you off to their establishment. ... read more
