Howdy. These pictures are from my camera so there are only a few. They go from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam; to Phu Quoc Island Vietnam; to Phnom Penh, Cambodia; to Kampot, Cambodia; to Siem Reap, Cambodia; to the last one of some fruit in Bangkok. There will be heaps more photos from Meg's camera and you'll probably see the same sequence of places with different and better pics. ENJOY... read more

Our introduction to Vietnam was a little bumpy. At the border (on the muddy bank of the river) they told us we would have to go through a heat sensor. We didn't. We did have to hand over money to officials behind desks with no explanation though. We were then herded to a restaurant and all sat down together and had to pay too much for terrible food. We re-boarded a different boat (we weren't told, and were lucky to have only left the water on the other boat). Arriving in Chao Doc some cyclo drivers practically grabbed our bags saying they would take us to the bus station. The drove round the houses and instead took us to an agent, who sold us overpriced tickets ($10 each!) for a bus to Rach Gia (or Richard ... read more

We were up bright and early this morning to get ourselves to the airport with plenty of time to check in for our flight to Rach Gia on the mainland. Our plan was to go from Rach Gia to Ha Tien border crossing into Cambodian and then on to Sihanoukville and then Phnom Penh. We had planned everything last night and were happy with it. Thats until Vietnam Airlines got involved. We got to the airport at 8am for our flight at 9am, the reccommended hour before for check in. We were a bit bemused by the fact that the Rach Gia flight had no check in counter so we went to the help desk to be told, " Oh, we never fly to Rach Gia on Sundays." - What!?! I had bought a ticket a ... read more

At 8.30am we were picked up by a minivan and taken to our boat. The boat was ready sat in the harbour, rocking side to side and there was a overpowering smell of dried fish. We quickly boarded the boat and sat on two chairs in the centre to ease the rocking. We sat eagerly awaiting the fresh sea breeze we knew we would get once out of the harbour. After a few clever manuevures the boat got out of the closely packed harbour and we were on our way to the An Thoi Islands,. The islands were close but the boat still took a fair while to reach them. It wasn't look before the first person fell ill to the rocking of the boat. I looked down at my travel bands and thanked god I ... read more

The day began with a firendly greeting from the hotel staff and other guests. After finishing breakfast we slapped on the suncream and walked along the beach all the way into town. On the way we passed all of the other resorts and began to realise how lucky we were with the positioning of our hotel. The others looked tatty and quiet, even some of the expensive ones, possibly because it was the low wet season. We on the other hand were very fortunate with our quiet and private beach with beautiful scenery. After about 1.5 hours we reached the town and our destination, an ice cream parlour! Rach had a pinapple stuffed with all sorts of ice cream and a mint cherry??!! Afterwards we headed back to our hotel on the back of 2 motorbike ... read more

Up early today to get to the airport for our flight to Phu Quoc Island. It was another small plane where we met the people we had travelled on the bus to Vang Vieng and had also seen several times when we had been travelling south in Vietnam. The flight took just under an hour and we then got a taxi to the place where we were staying. We had looked on the internet the day before for somewhere to stay and had called up the beach club to book a bungalow. When we approached the place we were a bit worried, we hadnt paid anything though so we decided we would have a look and if we didnt like it we could look elsewhere. However, once we had gone down the track to the resort ... read more

3rd August Nibby- What a beautiful island! Long golden sandy beaches laced with coconut trees and lush resorts with sea view bungalows. We got a lovely bungalow a stones throw from the sea. Only problem being that in all the time we've been here we've only had about 2 hours of sunshine. D'oh! I had a really lovely birthday, strange, but lovely! Used to having lots of friends and family over for the usual Woburn Sands shenanigans, this was quite different. Matty spoilt me good and proper. I got 30 red roses and a birthday cake then as the day went on (and the rain fell) I got a few other prezzies to unwrap. A Cambodia notebook, a hair pin, a silk scarf and some silver earrings. We had a play in the sea before heading ... read more

A German word which I may or may not have spelt correctly. It encapsulates the joy one feels when faced with the suffering of others. Any way, right now I'm feeling quite a lot of schadenfreudic joy. This is because I am on Phu Quoc Island right now and everyone else I know isn't. Admittedly just being on Phu Quoc itself is enough to make me joyful. But this feeling is increased exponentially with the knowledge that as I write, everyone else is having to deal with a Monday morning. As my first stop in Vietnam Phu Quoc makes a pretty good impression. We crossed the Cambodia-Vietnam border at Prek Chak/Ha Tien where my visa I acquired in the UK months before was thankfully accepted without comment. After assuring the nice Vietnamese man at disease control ... read more
