This is Mai: today we left Saigon to go to Phu Quoc. We had to wake up at 7:00. Our flight was supposed to be at 10:20 but it was late so we flew at a quatre to 11:00. Our hotel didn't look like what I excpected. I thought it would be better. When we came to the hotel our power was out for 3 hours and there were no television. So, We changed and went to the beach. The water of the beach was cold. We ate lunch at 1:30. I found the food good. It was getting dark at 3:15. We were starting to get ready to leave because it was about to rain. So at 3:30 we came in because it started to rain. Since then, it did not stop raining.:( This ... read more

Note: We've had a little trouble getting our blog to everyone we wanted it to go to. Sorry if this is the first time you are receiving notification about our blog. We have two previous ones that can be viewed from this website. Our four day visit to Saigon included a visit to the Reunification Palace, which was the home of the South Vietnamese president until April 30, 1975 when Saigon fell to the North and the Liberation Army crashed through the gates with their tanks. We also toured the War Remnants museum where we saw pictures of the profound horrors that took place during the “American War.” We walked around that museum in shock and disbelief that this country could be so utterly ignorant to repeat all the same monumental mistakes time and time again. ... read more

So...Long time no blog! Dont get me wrong, I'm not apologising, it was always the plan to tell you about our stay on Phu Quoc island either just before or just after we had left for the final part of our trip in Saigon.... But, with the power of hindsight I probably should have done the blog in stages. It now seems a bit of a daunting prospect to catch up with everything we have seen and done since my last update.....Still, no-one likes a shirker! Here we go...... Both of the places we stayed on the island were directly on the beach, south of Duong Dong town, the islands biggest community which lies on the west coast....The island is right at the early stages of what are obviously going to be some very major changes...Though ... read more

This is all actually a lie...I am not actuall still on the island. since I was on Phu Quoc Island, I have been on 2 planes, countless buses, many tuk tuks, 1 lion statue, multiple bikes, a plethora of boats, a few motorbikes and have moved on to 2 more countries, but have not had the time to actually sit down and write about it. I will attempt to remember my few days in Phu Quoc and then maybe just maybe will fill you in on my last few days which I have spent in Cambodia. Or about the place I am now in in Laos.... Getting to Phu Quoc Island was an adventure in itself. I walked down to the ferry terminal even though my hotel thought I was crazy and should get a taxi. ... read more

We took our first internal flight and we were both quite nervous...expecting a cranky old aircraft so we were pleasantly surprised when we boarded our snazzy plane (even though it still had propellers rather than a traditional engine) A quick 1 hour flight to the island and a 10 minute transfer to our resort we were soon in our beach gear and virtually ran to the beach!!! Long beach stretches for around 15 miles and is lined with top end resorts with bungalows on the beach for around 90 quid. We managed to secure a bargain room in between 2 posh resorts which meant we enjoyed golden sands and clear blue waters for a fraction of what other tourist were paying. The resort itself (The Tropicana) was excellent too. We had our own pool, pool table ... read more

Yet again l am up at supid o'clock (2.45am) to catch a 2 hour flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, then a 44 seater ATR72 aircraft to take the hour long flight to the island. I would have never thought about seeing this island if it wasn't for Fabian & Cornellia that l had met in Goa and spent time with travelling Kerela. So before l continue l'd like to thank them for a fantastic 3 days in paradise. The island is situated in the renowned Gulf of Thailand. Off shore fishing is a lucrative industry and local islanders tend to have higher standards of living than their counterparts on the mainland. People are therefore generally relatively well off and happy not to demand anything from passing foreigners. Instead they will welcome them with ... read more

Phu Quoc is about 100kms offshore from Rach Gia, due east, which on the map shows it to be closer to Cambodia that Vietnam, sitting just 15kms south of the Cambodian coastline. It's over 1000 sq kms of mountainous protected rainforest and some none too shabby coastline. The main stretch, called Long Beach is made up of a few high-end resorts, small guesthouses and a smattering of overpriced beach huts. We opt for Lam Ha guesthouse, which is set back from the beach in really lovely gardens. It's the best of both worlds...just a few steps from the beach, with a secluded and shady garden to retreat from the searing midday sun. Long Beach is, unsurprisingly, very long and the few businesses have a lot of space. Some seem better than others at keeping their patch ... read more

At the conclusion of our ride across the Mekong, we arrived in the forgettable town of Rach Gia. Thursday morning we set off by plane to the island of Phu Quoc, just a short 30 minute flight over the sea. Phu Quoc is about 60 km long and 20 km wide, and has 15 or 20 hotels, all clustered around the only decent roads on the island in Duong Dong. Noa booked it because, she said, it was a relaxing beach vacation spot. I think the proliferation of penis euphamisms in it's name is a more likely reason. The only other claim to fame of Phu Quoc is that it's native industry is a Vietnamese fish sauce called Nuoc Mam you can get anywhere. You can also smell it anywhere. Imagine rotting sardines with tabasco belches ... read more

We’re back again and slowly trying to catch up. In an attempt to use our time efficiently here in the internet cafe, Matt is going to publish a photo blog (so he can start uploading the pictures) while I write a separate blog. Our last blog left off in Ho Chi Minh City. This was the end of our Open Tour bus ticket, and so we started off on our own to explore the very south of Vietnam and the Mekong Delta. While the Open Tour buses were easy and convenient, the minibuses we negotiated for ourselves were adventurous and confusing. It seemed we were always transferring from one to another and were never quite sure that we were headed in the right direction. Our ultimate goal was Phu Quoc Island, in the very south, but ... read more
