Beash here! Hello to everyone on the western hemisphere! I feel like it’s been a while since Marcus or I have written so I just wanted to give a quick update. At this moment Marcus and I are sitting in a café in Ha Tien Vietnam and our hands are bloody from killing time. We have eight more hours before our bus leaves to the next city on our journey. Our packs are fully loaded which tends to make walking a bit more of a task, throw in the blazing heat and you have a recipe for disaster. So we are posted up here in a second story café with our lappy, books and constant refills of iced tea. I have a question for all of you, does it make any sense to order a “crab, ... read more

We left HCMC for Mui Ne beach so we could have some sun and do nothing for a week. Well we did just about nothing so theres not much to write about! We got nice weather and stayed in a nice bungalow next to the beach for £7 per night, and they did real chips....always a bonus. We braved it and rented a motorbike for a day, to drive to the sandunes. We did find them but there was a huge lake between us and the dunes, so we took photos from a distance! Never mind, we have seen sandunes in South Shields before! Craig got sunburn (it was only a matter of time). There was a lot of watersports there because its so windy, Craig wanted to try the kite sufing but left it too ... read more

Caitlin woke up to a new dress, bag and swimmers. She was very excited it was her 3rd birthday and couldn't wait to start the day. Unfortunately for Caitlin, after the buffet breaky, it was straight ona bus to the Mekong Delta. Bus trip forgetable, however once in the Mekong, we jumped aboard a boat and toured the area which included a watching local ladies make rice paper / coconut candy / rice wine(metho) and puffed rice. Fred was especially taken by the lady arduously making rice paper. We also had a good lunch on an island and then lazed around in hammocks. After lunch we listened to some hideous local traditional music. I will try to add the video to this blog and you will know what Im talking about. After lunch we toured around ... read more

This was supposed to be an early day, as we wanted to catch the Cai Rang Market. So out at 6.30 in the morning and rush through breakfast to leave at 7. We boarded into small low boats which would take us to the market and then into the backwater canals. We weave through an entire market on boats - trading fiercely between each other - yet, I feel 7 o clock is too late. We should have been here at 6 to catch the action at its height. But still its unique. An entire life on water. Families with children. Mostly one floor, some two floors on the boat. And they live and trade and wash their clothes and hang them out - all on the boat. I would have preferred a sampan to take ... read more

Morning rush to reach the Sinh Cafe booking office. Thankfully we can keep part of our luggage here, so we carry one bag with us and leave the rest here. Good airconditioned bus, a nice guide - its comfortable even if both Anu and I hate package tours. 3 hours to Cai Be and the rain god plays with us. We buy very flimsy raincoats - 7 dongs each. On to a boat in Cai Be and on the Cai Be river, passing the Cau Be floating market. The banks of the river are houses, with stilts into the river, and people's lives play out unconcerned about the tourist boats that peep into their homes. Here a girl cleans up her front room - there a mother is feeding a child. All around loading unloading of ... read more

24, 27 and 28 September 2009 - I was back in Cần Thơ city, which is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta, and it was my 3rd visit to this city. On this trip I would go further south through 4 provinces and reach the southernmost point of Vietnam. I decided to book a 5-day tour with a travel agent in Hanoi (Vietran Company) and the tour cost VND 3.9 million (US$200). If I traveled on my own, this amount would be enough for only air tickets (round trip) to/from Hanoi and Cần Thơ, so it was cheaper to travel with a travel agent. There were 22 Vietnamese on the tour and 18 of them were women, so it was quite noisy but fun. I was lucky as the agent arranged an old woman to ... read more

Can Tho We took an early bus to Can Tho, about four hours away from Ben Tre. Ben went in search of a hotel while I looked after the bags, and a lady selling goods on the street invited me to sit with her. I watched as people came and went on their motorbikes to buy drinks, or even a single cigarette. One lady came by and said she thought I was beautiful, pointing to the fact I had a pointy nose and not a flat one! It’s funny what other people notice! We had a cracking dinner in Can Tho - I went in search of a bargain, and came back with a two course dinner (that tasted really good!) for 10,000 dong - about 40p. We had a rice dish with meat and a ... read more

Canadian Geisha in Can Tho While waiting for my laptop to get fixed, I decided to head South into the Mekong Delta to visit the floating market. Having missed the experience in Thailand, I was really looking forward to witnessing this early morning spectacle. I caught a local bus to the town of Can Tho where I was, as usual, adopted. This time my personal guardian angel took the form of a young Vietnamese woman with a flawless command of the English language. The usual litany of questions were brought forward, and having ascertained that I was indeed traveling alone, she felt that it was her duty to look after me until I arrived in Can Tho safe and sound. This involved giving me a running commentary of the surrounding landscape, offering suggestions as to hotels ... read more

Day 394: Tuesday 28th July - On and off various modes of transport all day For the next two days I am on a tour to the Mekong Delta. I’ve changed my mind about whether to go to the Mekong Delta several times over the course of the last few days in Saigon, but in the end I chose to pay $23 for a two day tour. The case for was not wanting to miss out on seeing an example of Vietnamese agricultural life and after tracking the Mekong’s progress through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia I felt drawn to seeing it in the final country it flows through before discharging into the South China Sea. The case against was that I had been told by Maria - the Spanish girl I met on the slowboat down ... read more
