After meeting Pete for breakfast we went to catch our bus. We were told that a taxi would collect us at take us to the bus station, but when he didn’t turn up till 12.25 we were a little worried. When we got in the taxi we were also worried that it may not make it to the station without breaking down. It wasn’t that old but it had not been looked after. All the window tinting was pealing off , there were so many dents it’s a wonder that it still looked car shaped and it made some noises that really were not healthy. As we got on our way we found there was even more wrong with it. Every time the driver took his foot off the accelerator we stalled. Mostly this didn’t matter ... read more

Hung's Homestay near Can Tho While exploring in Can Tho, Monk had bumped into a Canadian couple he'd previously met on the bus from Phnom Penh to Kampot. They'd just arrived in Can Tho that morning after having stayed two nights in a homestay which they said had been wonderful. A couple of nights' stay in the home of a Vietnamese family was on Monk's agenda for the next stage of the trip and what better place to choose than one that came so highly recommended. Monk called Hung and arranged to meet him the next morning. Hung's nephew turned up on his motorbike and Monk and Saavas climbed into a taxi which followed him out of Can Tho into the countryside. The normal way of arriving at Hung's is to meet him at a road ... read more

Mekong River Trip So we decided to cross into Cambodia by taking a 2 day tour up the Mekong river. It was lots of fun. Day 1 included: floating market (although we arrived after the action), coconut candy making (zeroing in on your fillings and doing their best to remove them! - we still have ours at the bottom of our bag), seeing how rice paper is made and then lunch at a local restuarant before arriving at the border town Can Tho. Day 2: 5am wake up call and a knock at the door to a grumpy Tory (1hr too early!), a row boat out to the floating villages and fish farms (too many tourists nearly sank one house!), visit to a very touristy Champa village with a local old man posing in the window ... read more

Being in Saigon gave us the opportunity to book on to a 2 day trip of the Mekong Delta – so we decided to escape the busy city for the meandering river! The Mekong Delta is an enormous river than snakes through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China. In Vietnam it flows south of Saigon so we were able to take a bus to My Tho city and then we were taken by motor boat onto the Delta and by Dragon Island, Unicorn Island, Phoenix Island and Turtle Island – each of the island had their own little ports and houses on stilts by the coast that the locals lived on. We were taken to Unicorn Island where we were shown a honey farm – Tina tried the honey (which involved putting her finger into a swarm ... read more

Last night was a tailoring marathon. When we showed up at 6, they asked us to come back at 8:15. From 8:30 until after 11 Tricia, Verona and various staff members made adjustments and alternations. The jacket I ordered was 75% done and once they knew it fit they finished it – changing the collar and sleeves and hemming it. Jack’s suit, sport coat, trousers and shirts were pretty much done and they came out great. My clothes were more problematic since they were not their bread and butter. At 11 o’clock the two sisters were putting buttons on my shirt. It didn’t take them very long. Tricia and Verona have a good size operation with 20 people working for them and it was obvious that the staff was doing a lot of the work behind ... read more

Nov 16: Can To Time to do a little updating. We have spent a lot of our last few days traveling, but let me start with Hoi An. This is a must stop for anyone traveling Vietnam. It is sometimes referred to as the Macau of Vietnam because it is an old city with lots of French history. The “Historic City Centre” has lots of French influence and is of course, very touristy. We enjoyed just wandering around the area. One day was spent doing this, the next we took a tour to My Son (Mee Sung) which was a temple area older than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Not much left of it thought after the Americans got through bombing it. They did leave a lot of vehicles, helicopters and such behind though. In fact, a couple ... read more

07/11/2010 - 09/11/2010 I arrived in Saigon (HCM) quite late, around 19h30. My lonely planet seems to be a bit out of date cause the 2 (cheapest) guesthouses we tried to find already changed location. We (me and Tamar, NL) finally did find a good hotel thanks to friends of Tamar we met on the streets. Luckily, cause it was really coming down; some streets were flooded up to knee level! In the evening I had a relaxed dinner with Nguyen Nguyen from couchsurfing; we also booked my 3 day tour to Mekong Delta. The tour was a nice package, relaxed: 3 days with several sight seeing activities, overnights in sweet hotels, arrangement for Cambodia visa and boat + bus to Pnom Penh..all for 50 dollars. First day we all got on the bus to Ben ... read more

Sunday, 24th October 2010 to Monday, 25th October 2010 "You could bank your last USD 25 on a 2 Day 1 Night adventure in Mekong Delta. Trust me, that's what I called money well-spent!" I spent my 3rd and 4th day in Vietnam exploring the mighty Mekong Delta, one of the country's chief rice-growing regions for its 86 million people. This was nothing too difficult to accomplish. Rather, it was a well-planned sight-seeing route departing from Ho Chi Minh City and back in 2 days, courtesy of the Sinh Tourist. Joining the local tour was the most cost-effective and hassle free way to tour the Mekong Delta proper. Our journey took us through the main provincial towns of Ben Tre, Can Tho and Vinh Long on a variety of transport modes. The lengthy bus ride between ... read more

So, you will by now have gathered that we are really quite taken with Saigon. In fact, it has brought me full circle from Quy Nhon - undoubtedly my lowest point - and I, along with my three companions, will now be really rather sad to wave the country goodbye in a few days time. 3 October 2010 I am pleased to report that, notwithstanding the overnight construction right outside or bedroom window, we awoke rested and ready to enjoy whatever experiences today was to bring. Not all hotel rooms in Vietnam come with windows but for last night and tonight we have paid the extra for a room with a window. The upside of this is that, this morning, we were woken up by the sun rather than a nagging feeling that we must have ... read more

The Mekong Delta (Vietnamese: đồng bằng sông Cửu Long “Nine Dragon river delta”) is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southeastern Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi). The size of the area covered by water depends on the season. So I booked on a 3 day trip up the Mekong Delta that would finish in Phomn Penh (Cambodia)... I can't remember the exact itinery but online it says it was this: DAY 1 : HOCHIMINH CITY - MYTHO - CAN THO Travel to My Tho by coach. Cross Mekong river by motorized boat. Row- boat ride along small creeks to Mekong River estuary. Motorized boat cruise along natural creeks and quiet ... read more
