Feb 16 Lucy's birthday We were up early to take the boat to the floating markets. This is a way of life that may be disappearing in Vietnam. At first there were few roads and so people living by the river would take their goods to market by boat. A huge pole advertises what they were bartering because no one exchanged money to begin with, just the goods. Later the market grew with people serving tea, coffee, breakfast. The market starts early about 2 am so the people would get up at 1 am to get there. With the development of the country more roads were built and goods were transported by lorry so the markets are less busy, but for some Vietnamese it is their way of life and so it continues more of a ... read more

Today we said goodbye to Saigon and what a fabulous city it is. We particularly enjoyed the party atmosphere around the Tet celebrations, the wide open boulevards thanks to the Froggies, they do get some things right and of course the wonderful food. Our accommodation was superb and you have to hand it to the Vietnamese they are a really friendly bunch. Apparently the population in 1924 was 28million this has now grown to over90million so the population is young , keen to learn and prosper. 28 to 90 million guess they are a friendly lot!An early start with a new driver and local guide, Duc, who explained about the journey to our destination for the. day Can Tho. Our first visit was to a temple, one with a difference, it involved about five religions under ... read more

Geo: 10.03, 105.78What a place! From Saigon I took an organised trip down the Mekong Delta before cycling down, the trip only cost $6 and was well worth the money. I was collected from my hostel to catch the bus to My Tho where we were put on our first boat of the day. This was a fairly large boat which took us across the river to one of the many islands, I love boats however this one felt quite unstable with them balancing the people either side, but when someone moved the whole boat moved to that side! Once across we walked down through a village where they showed us bee hives and coconut candy making and we had an opportunity to buy products. We were given a demonstration on how to open coconuts (although ... read more

The next morning we decided to drive the roundabout way to Can Tho, through Sa Dec by way of the ferry. It was just about the longest and slowest way to Can Tho, and it was lovely. We sanked around the islands, past fruit garden after fruit garden, the roads sleepy and barely wide enough for one car at a time. Endless bridges, markets and smiling faces along the way. The ferry was not the scary ferry we had seen so many times before, but rather a larger one, with cars, thus slowing down the traffic, even though we were glad we had watched them the day before and knew not to be at the front of the line, as people drove on and off well before the ramp even got close to the pier... It ... read more

And this is what you get for letting your guard down in Vietnam. I suppose it had to happen sooner or later to me, probably no tourist is immune to it. I got scammed. It happened on the short 3h minivan ride from My Tho to Can Tho. I'd hailed a minivan from the highway and asked how much it would cost. The price was VND150k (about USD7.5), quite steep for a short 3h ride, but I thought I would just put up with the tourist price, since I wasn't exactly sure how much it ought to have been, and paid upfront. Anyway, halfway through, several of the other passengers alighted, and the driver-conductor team swapped with a new incoming pair. I'd seen this kinda arrangement before in other places (other than Vietnam), so I thought ... read more

Well I know you have all been missing yesterday's blog. So lots to get you up to speed with. We got to the place where we booked the two day trip for 7.45 as the bus was supposed to be going at 8am. As you know and so do we that Vietnamese time is when it turns up. So around 8.30 the bus turned up and the guide apologised for the lateness - which shook us but was a real nice touch. then he introduces himself "Joseph" was his English name and then starts to tell us about the trip we are going on to the Cu Chi tunnels to which a load of English shouted we are not going there we are going to the Mekon Delta on a 2 day trip. Well Joseph states ... read more

First some advise about these tours...basically they are all the same!!! We walked around HCM visiting a number of travel agencies to pick out a tour that suited us. There were some marginal differences in price but we eventually settled on a 3 day trip which ended with a slow boat across the Vietnamese border and up the Mekong to Phnom Penn in Cambodia. We also decided to do a home stay in the Mekong. When we talked to other people on the trip it appears that a number of tours had been amalgamated resulting in frequent changes of guides and plans as, for example, the one day tourists went in one minibus back to HCM while the rest of us packed into an overcrowded minibus to travel a few hours to our nights accommodation. None ... read more

K - Whilst in Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon) we visited the War Remnants Museum covering the American War. It consists mainly of photographs including many by journalists killed during the war. There is also a very moving section highlighting the ongoing effects of Agent Orange and other chemicals used during the conflict - a second generation of children still being born with severe disabilities. It is thought provoking and highly recommended if you are ever in Saigon. Although HCMC is a nice enough City we decided to spend our last couple of nights in Vietnam in the Mekong Delta. The Delta is a popular tourist trip from HCMC but in order to make life harder we elected to travel on our own. After all nothing beats spending a day a little confused and nervous as ... read more
