Hey everyone! It's been a while since I posted anything I know, But I have been in the process of getting documents sent, contacting the Embassy to get things notarized etc etc so it's been pretty busy trying to get this work visa. Tet holiday (Lunar New Year) is just about finished so things are starting to open up again as usual and I would have liked to get out and go the beach or something during the holiday, but as I mentioned I have been pretty busy and the lack of funds put a damper on things as well. I did however finally get out and do something I FINALLY made it down to the infamous floating market here in Can Tho City and I have to see it's pretty much what I expected, but ... read more

So, I made my escape to the place I originally intended to go to..Vietnam. All of the blogs and internet research that I have read about this country was absolutely correct so far! It is a truly amazing place with amazing food and people, in fact I have been so busy exploring the food stalls and restaurants I really haven't done anything else lol. I got hired at the end of November for a position starting at the beginning of January teaching elementary students on a 1 year contract for what is turning out to be a pretty good company and even better recruiter! Callie is her name and she is truly awesome and has shown me so much since I arrived here and taken care of any issues I have come across. She's not the ... read more

Cần Thơ, south of Saigon, is the fourth largest city of Vietnam. It is located along the Mekong Delta. This little riverside town may be small, but it comes to life at night as street vendors and locals come out for the breeze. Its a nice town to stop by and enjoy a boat ride on the river or visit the local floating market. There's also a really good Nem Nướng roll place called Nem Nuong Thanh Van. It is a favorite of the locals and everyone in town knows of it. I met a local on the bus from Saigon to Can Tho. We sat next to each other the whole ride and he told me his life story. Of how he used to wild out when he was younger, with women and alcohol. He ... read more

Well I am back in Saigon for the night while en route to Da Lat tomorrow. I thought I should use the time to catch up on reports. Brace yourself, this will be a long one. Today I returned from Can Tho and the Mekong Delta. I arrived in Can Tho on Tuesday afternoon. I tend to always spend my arrival day in a new place wandering around trying to get a feel for the place, which is what I did Tuesday. I greatly enjoyed Can Tho. After being in Saigon, Can Tho seemed very peaceful, relaxed, not crowded with tourists. There were far more random "hellos", smiles, and waves from the locals than in Saigon and almost no one trying to sell me things which was nice. The city has a fairly young population due ... read more

Well day two can be described in just a few words - very hot, very long, very tiring. Today we cycled approx 50miles in temperatures of about 35 degrees, rising to 39 degrees at one point. It took it's toll on everyone, even the experienced cyclists. Matt and I managed to complete the day but with two sore bums!!!! We started with a quick ride to a Buddhist temple, quite strange, glowing paintwork that I'm sure glowed in the dark and flashing lights in the actual temple. Quite bizarre then we started the epic journey. we cycled through paddy fields of rice so it was very open hence the temperatures. Very off road and very mountain bike, lots of little bridges and paths, some quite steep and some very narrow. No-one fell in the water though ... read more

Monday 30th September 2013 Breakfast on top floor of hotel looking out over Can Tho, the rain looks like it has gone away for the morning at least. Caught our $1 taxi to the other hotel where the rest of the group was staying. A short walk to the jetty where we caught a boat to take us to the Cai Rang floating markets. The markets are a wholesale market and they show what they are selling by tying it to a bamboo pole and having it at the back of the boat. Being on a boat is being a captive audience as there are small boats that pull up alongside you and try and sell you soft drink, coffee, coconuts, bananas or pineapples. We shared a coconut freshly cut with a couple of straws for ... read more

Sunday 29th September 2013 Early pick up, and a full bus on Highway 1 (or as Phong, our guide says, Lowway with elephant holes) 20min down the road and phone call to say someone was left behind so a little stop on side of highway while they caught up and bought the missing passenger. Off again. Couple of hours down to the Mekong delta. I have never seen so much water. The Upper Mekong river was crossed first. It is huge. Stopped in the provence of Ben Tre and visited a small family "farm". Had some fresh fruit and tea and was entertained by some Southern Vietnamese Folk music - very different, the musical instruments and the tune the singer sings doesn't seem to match, but entertaining none the less. Then a walk down to the ... read more

MISCHIEF ON THE MEKONG Part 3...Kidnapped & Extorted...The Polly Diaries. Two tom cats yowling into the night...a distant horn of a barge...a midnight knock on a door. The knocking repeated...louder this time...a man's voice wrenched out of deep sleep calling out "Who is it? Who is it?" Denise awoken in the next room..."That's Shane's voice?" A female voice "It's Housekeeping...please open the door." "What do you want?" "I want to see Polly." "Why?" "We have received a message in reception. Please open the door. I want to see if Polly is alright." There is a pause in the darkness. "She's not here" came Shane's pained reply. "Please open the door Sir...I can hear a voice...Who have you got in there?" "That's my friend Sheba." "Please open the door Sir...I want to see if Sheba is alright." ... read more
