Christmas in Can Tho Christmas Eve found us leaving Cambodia and heading back into Vietnam. It was a return to the noble Mekong, which calmly carried us down towards the famous delta that so richly supplies Vietnam with its rice, fruit and vegetables. It was a peaceful journey, passing similar villages to those on the Tonle Sap. We swapped boats at the border, jumping aboard a vessel slung with hammocks. We kicked back and watched it all slip by. Pressing on by bus to Can Tho, another provincial capital, we were struck by Christmas celebrations as we arrived. Santas hooning about on motorbikes, giant sacks behind them; children everywhere in Santa suits, or wearing special red and white clothes, or simply dressed up in their best clothes. Everyone was out for the night - motorbikes ... read more

It was a good thing we had two alarms with us, because it's no easy thing getting up at 5am on your holiday. Nevertheless, by 5:30 we were being led between the old buildings on the side of the river to where our boatman for the day was steadying a 5m long boat, shaped like a large canoe. We dumped our backpack in the front of the boat, and stretched out in the middle, while our 19 year-old boatman used two oars to row us away from the shore. The boat did not sit very high above the water, but it was comfortable enough, a good thing since we'd paid the guy for the next 8 hours. As we got away from the bank, our driver swung the long extended propeller shaft of a 5hp motor ... read more

We woke up at 6am to be packed and ready for our motorbike taxis to take us to our ferry to Rach Gia. The road from our resort into town was extra beautiful in the early morning sun shine. It was kind of sad riding out of the town for the last time. It's a really tough decision to make, to leave paradise for the sake of a new unknown adventure... Phu Quoc is paradise! The little island was surprisingly busy place at 6am! There were people all along the road going about their business, getting ready for the day. We were dropped off at the bus stop where we plonked our bags off onto two empty seats, and, with about 10min to go before departure time we decided to go and find some breakfast. We ... read more

24-29 July Headed out from Phnom Penh by bus to Kampot, in SE Cambodia, to see the Elephant Mountains and experience a much slower pace of Cambodian life in the sleepy riverside town. There's not too much going on in Kampot, but we headed out to "town" nonetheless to see for ourselves. After a couple futile attempts to find much of anything happening, we ended up reading up on further travel options and organised an early morning start to Bokor National Park and an abandoned French hill station atop the mountain. While the drive up the mountain was a windy 30 KM, we finally understood the inside joke amongst Cambodians about the Cambodian Back Massage -- the black and blue all over result of sitting in the back of a pickup while going over Cambodian roads. ... read more

Cantho is a small town in Southern Vietnam and thrives off the Mekong Delta. Our visit there was purely for the purpose of seeing the wonderful floating markets. We got up at 5am the day after we arrived in Cantho in order to catch a local bus at 6am to Phung Hiep, a famous floating market that is apparently less touristy than many other floating markets. At 7.30am, we found a very nice man at the banks of the river, who offered to take us round Phung Hiep for one hour. We jumped on his tiny wooden boat and steadily, he rowed us toward the market. It was entirely food based and involved a lot of trading. It was designed for the local people rather than any tourist set up (as many are nowadays!). We purchased ... read more

Long Xuyen If you're planning on spending two to three months in the Mekong Delta, remember to set aside at least five minutes for the provincial capital of An Giang, Long Xuyen. Last time I went there we struggled to find a hotel which would accept foreigners and ended up staying in a brothel. This time around the situation isn't much better -- one place I checked, the Thai Binh 2, had a second floor karaoke bar that was going off at two in the afternoon. I braved the screeching din and peeked inside to see the place was packed with a bunch of middle-aged Vietnamese men, all with beer-goggles well fogged and women fawning all over them. And this was 2pm on a weekday! We beat a hasty retreat out of Long Xuyen and headed ... read more

June 17, 2007 Sunday Can Tho 7:10am last night david’s class phone calls omg we all had one hell of a night last night. Most of us went to a discotech with Duong and Young. It was amazing. They use actual lasers. It was like we were in Usher’s video. Our Vietnamese teacher from Siagon came down with her friend, Mandy, on a bus. They brought alcohol so we pre-gamed in their room. Patrick was so drunk. He and Mandy were drinking beer like it was water at dinner. We headed our for the discotec at about 10:30pm. Lee Anne let me wear one of her hulters. For one on this trip I looked cute. When we got to the discotec, I seriously felt like a moviestar. The bounces had suit on with mouth pieces. The ... read more

June 10, 2007 I cannot believe it is June 10th or that is is Sunday. Today we went onto the job site. We helped construct a foot bridge. But before I get into that. I peed in a shower today. let me explain. The bathroom facilities was a shower. Literally it had a shower head, concrete everything, a water bucket, a movable metal door, and a drain. I had to squat down close to the drain and pee. So gross because it splashes. Lee-Anne and I were like can we just dig a hole and do like a camping trip. But Thai was afraid that little boys would see us. So I had to use the village lady’s bathroom. I had to put the toilet paper. So our project was to tie rebar. We did a ... read more
