or should I better say "nach dem Regen ist vor dem Regen" ? Shalom, bonjour, good morning guys & girls. Our last day in Vietnam today, heavy rainfalls are flushing us over the border to Cambodia. Can u send us some parapluies please. We started rushing southwards thru the country and finally found peace in the Mekong Delta aka the south Vietnam rice basket, where we spent the last few days strolling along the little rivers and canals. Irrigated and sprinkled by the Mekong River, this delta produced itself alone one-half of the rice of the country, which allows Vietnam to become the third largest exporter of rice in the world. Clocks are ticking much slower in that region, people seem to be more relaxed and hearty compared to the north. Communication in general is quite ... read more

Feb 25 Finally we arrive in Can Tho at the Victoria resort. IN keeping with the pattern so far it was another long travel day. Quick painless flight to Ho Chi Minh City where we arrived about 10:30 am. I had forgotten how long some of the lineups in Vietnam can take. The processing of our entry/extra landing document thingies (which you need as well as a passport & a visa) seemed to take forever.. followed by a wait for our baggage that resulted in us exiting the airport about 12:30! We were met by a private car and driver and driven to Can Tho a journey of only 200 or so km that took us 4.5 hours.... the last 9 km alone took over an hour as it involves a ferry etc. The hotel is ... read more

This morning we left our hotel by boat for the Can Tho floating market. Words can barely do justice to the bustle and life that we witnessed and I recommend that you see our photo set on Flickr™. Wares are advertised by examples being strung from the top of a bamboo pole so that all can identify the boat they need to buy their melons, their turnips or their candies. The authorities were out sticking trading licences to the side of the boats. A lone European tourist was canoeing amongst the jostling craft, much to the amusement of the traders. We bought a couple of cans of cold drink from a young boy out on a boat with his mother, all without our boat slowing! The streets were also fascinating with shops that specialised in very ... read more

We said goodbye to Saigon for the last time this morning and headed east along the road. The first setback was at the end of the new dual carriageway when there was the mother of all gridlocks. Imagine buses, lorries, vans and cars all sounding their klaxons as they move forward and backward, drivers out of their seats assessing their chances of bettering their position and, amidst all this, mopeds wriggling between the vehicles in all directions! We escaped eventually and headed out of the city through Chinatown and the roadworks that reduce the road to a bottleneck every 500 metres. After a couple of hours we made stop at a roadside rest stop that was better than any service area we've ever seen - anywhere. Spotless tables, high ceilings, different dining areas, immaculate gardens and ... read more

Hiền Guesthouse Cân Thơ Việt Nam Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of modern looking Cantho City is Hien Guesthouse # 1 or # 2. Sometimes these little jewels are not called guesthouses but Nhà Nghề. The dictionary meaning of those two words is professional compared to amateur. The top of rooms are of course hotels which go by the name Khách Sạn. On my bike ride from Hanoi to Saigon two years ago I stayed almost totally in these smaller guesthouses or minihotels. On that trip I paid as low as $2.20 to one time $20.00 in a regular hotel. Most of the time I paid around 5-6 dollars. Usually, these minihotels are very family orientated and try their best to make you feel at home. I remember the $2.20 guesthouse well as the ... read more

The Day My University of Kansas English Professors Turned Over In Their Graves It was January 9th, 2008 and I am back in Cần Thơ up to my eyeballs in library troubles when the strangest thing happened. I was offered a job as an English Teacher. 15.00 dollars a class and I could have as many classes as I want. Want to go home first, just sign a one year contract and they will fly you round trip free. Here in Việt Nam they don’t have a clue about my English background. The truth is, English is not my native tongue. My native tongue is Sanfordese. Named after the country I grew up in those first 10 years of impressionable learning. If you grew up around Sanford Kansas USA you spoke Sanfordese. It is not a ... read more

Cantho University Learning Resource Center The last business I had in the Mekong Delta was arranging for some training for our Librarian in the Unification Library. She is a 1st grade teacher but knows little about libraries. I wanted to talk to the University of Cantho’s Librarian. To do this I had to get through the maze of misinformation I was getting from my friends. “You can’t get in the library with out a student ID.” One student told me the librarian was mean. Remembering my friend Frank’s advice from Saigon: “Everything is impossible, anything is possible,” I kept plugging away. When I was about ready to hire a motorbike to go there and knock on the door, my friend Prof. Trung called and said he would pick me up and try our luck. We went ... read more

Miss Hòa A Future Rotary Youth Exchange Student? In 2002 when the Unification Library was dedicated they had the children of the area sing and dance and as always the children were as good and cute as can be. The star of the show was a little Miss Hoa, who lived just across the canal and could really sing and dance well. Every now and then I would hear news of Miss Hoa, how good a student she was and that the Church sent her to Saigon to study the electric piano under Bich Lieu Nguyen’s guidance. She learned a lot in one summer and when she returned to Canal B she was appointed the Church organist. Every time I showed up at the Unification Library and they had the children perform it was Miss Hoa ... read more

The Unification Library The Unification Library is built on the North side of Canal B, Cần Thơ City Province Vietnam. This area has quite a history. Just over 50 years ago it was native grassland. It was too far south to be considered part of the Plain of Reeds but still grass land. Then came 1954, the split of Việt Nam into the North and South and about one million, mostly Catholics moved south for religious freedom. I talked to one of the survivors of this exodus south. He told me he escaped the North with only his clothes on his back. He was taken south in a French freighter. Upon their arrival in the south they were taken to an area near Saigon where they were kept alive by the South Vietnamese government. Then the ... read more

Cán Thơ, the Kansas State of the Mekong And Thien An Orphanage Cán Thơ is about three time larger than Vình Long and the home of the agricultural university of Việt Nam. They were host to Rotary District 5690’s/Heifer International’s Orphan Life Skills Project. It is now closed. From that project though, I became acquainted with “Aunt Rose” the leader of now Thien An Orphanage. It is the best project I am acquainted with in Việt Nam unless you count Trang our Rotary Exchange student a project. District 5690, Kansas and Oklahoma has made its impact on this orphanage. Two years ago we drilled them a fresh water well and installed their water system. We also bought them a computer for office work and English software. One year ago the Rotary Club of Overland Park KS ... read more
