I felt at home as soon as we arrived in Chiang Mai. It took less than 30 minutes to collect bags and catch a tuk tuk (40pp) to our hostel. Unfortunately, upon arrival we were advised our room was unavailable and we were taken to another guesthouse called the Oldies where we stayed the night in a dark teakwood room. It had its charm, but certainly wasn't worth the 600 baht we were paying for Chiang Mai Gate Capsule Hostel. Fortunately, it was still next to the street food night market, so I indulged in some vegan noodles (50 THB) and a delicious blueberry pineapple shake (40 THB). We ended up at Bodhi Tree Cafe in the northeast corner of old town for breakfast and Lotus asked me to teach classes even before our food arrived. ... read more

We arrived at our accommodation just after midnight (home time). The next morning we explored the Resort. It is very spacious. Lovely pools and 4 restaurants. Our room overlooks the lap pools. The gardens are beautiful.... read more

Late arising this morning, about 9:00am local time, and slow to get moving. But a quick shower and off to a leisurely breakfast. Well I wish. We’d been booked to meet the Asian Holidays representative at 10:30 so we gulped down breakfast and bolted for the resort lobby. After about an hour and a half we walked away with two days trips organized plus a night’s entertainment and a better feel for the area. A bit of a wander around the resort to look at some of the features. Then on the way back to our room a bit of a walk around the various breezeways in our part of the resort – it seems to be organized into buildings, we are in 4 - to get the lay of the land. Back in our room ... read more

Geo: 7.97501, 98.3515We are doing nothing. We are not taking any boat trips or excursions; we are simply hanging out in this calm, quiet spot. Nice big room, AC, swimming, eating, reading, washing laundry, catching up on our lives through great Internet. Good sleeps, nice meals. It has been awhile. And part of our reboot in Panwa, Phuket, Thailand is to jettison unnecessary baggage as we realized that the 15kg that discount airlines allow is a lot less than what we are carrying and very costly to pay the extra fees. I had been trying to reduce my baggage by giving away a little of this and that...a small leather backgammon game went to Si Thu in Mandalay, some medications and markers went to a couple in Pyin Oo Lwin who do volunteer work. But here, ... read more

Plane Food & Staying Healthy On the ground we plan our meals and make our choices. It’s not always quite as easy when you’re 30,000 feet in the air! I recently had two long haul flights for which I was organized with protein bars and some oatmeal whilst in transit. On the second flight hunger had reached me and probably boredom too… so I asked for the beef meal. It made me notice just how tricky planes are! I had four pieces of beef, some carrots and some beans. Everything else on the plate was beige! Mashed potato, crackers, cheese, bread, pasta, butter. I had the cheese and left the rest behind which was a waste really. There was also a piece of chocolate. ... read more

After 3 days of lying on the beach in varying stages of discomfort/numbness, reading a lot and deciding that the activities in Patong were too expensive (3400b for half a day's ziplining) it was time to move on. We never really jnderstood the sunbed thing. When I tried to ask some western people lying on them what the score was with hiring/buying suddenly they couldn't speak English, although they just had been having a conversation with the Thai vendors. Not helpful at all! So the mystery remained..... Our little street was good, quiet and clean enough, but others smelled the worst I've ever encountered in Asia, rancid and disgusting, even outside quite swanky hotels. And nowhere gets going very early, so breakfast before 9 was impossible except for the v expensive hotels with buffets. This is ... read more

Always know it's time to move on when we start recognising the dogs, the one with one ear up and one down, the one bounding along happily with only one back leg, the one which prompted Sam to sing a little song 'Do your.... hang low, tralala' whenever she saw it..... It was a boy, needless to say. ATMs in Thailand - TRY NOT TO USE THEM, no security issues it seems, but there is a humongous charge of over 5% for each transaction, I paid 220b for taking out 4000b, even though my Nationwide account has free transactions abroad. Better to bring cash, large USD or any kind of GBP and go to the money changers, loads of these, they print you off a slip to show how much you are going to get, no ... read more

Another two hour ferry ($250b) led me to Phuket on the far western Andaman coast here in Thailand. Phuket is known as the Las Vegas of Thailand or the "Sin City" if you will. I'm not even sure why I came here as usually massive nightclubs with techno beats are not usually my thing. I guess I just wanted to see the show. Phuket is quite large and as I arrived at the pier I had no idea on how I would get to the west coast resort town of Patong some 8km away. The taxis of course wanted a ridiculous $500b for the ride. As per my usual policy I side-stepped them and the other tourists and walked into Phuket Town 2km away. Once there a friendly local drew me a map to the bus ... read more

Phuket Airport was a complete mess, very disorganised. After agreeing a rate for the taxi outta there I was happy when the meter passed the agreed rate. He soon turned it off to save face. I had beaten the system, yippee. More dangerous driving saw me very relieved to make it to the Red Planet hotel in Patong. Being the cheapest hotel I have ever booked I was nervous. The room was basic, small and congested. The sheets weren't great, the view was poor. It was £25 a night so I forgave it. I was actually impressed believe it it not. The air con was fantastic, the fan worked, great shower pressure and the bed wasn't uncomfortable. The key things were good. Add to that the staff were incredibly helpful, directing and informing us of stuff ... read more

We've arrived in Phuket! It's absolutely baking hot, so a 40 minute car journey is not what we want right straight off the bat, especially when part of that is the cab driver stopping to get petrol! We arrive at our hotel, dump our bags and walk directly across the street to a biker bar where we have the tastiest food this whole trip so far! All washed down with ice cold Coke and Sprite! Once we are sufficiently fed and watered we head back over the road to actually check in, I'll be honest are hotel isn't the best, it's small, noisy and grotty looking, but we're here for two nights and it's in a good location! It also has a really good shower in it so we're all good! We head out to Patong ... read more
