So mussten wir rund hundert Meter vom Strand entfernt aussteigen ... read more

At last!! We've finally manages to put photos on!! We have just spent 15 days on one island. That's quite unusual for us to spend so long in one place. We made many new friends while we were there, a family from Finland travelling with a 13 month old boy, an American family with 8 year old Lily to mention but a few. We also spent time with the boatman ,Jak and his wife Som, who took us on a tour around the whole island in their air conditioned car. Luxury! Usually around here air con means an open truck of some sort with the wind blowing in your hair. We spent many a happy hour in the Green Coffee shop together swapping experiences of places travelled to in the past sipping a cold beer. Days ... read more

We'd only made plans for the first weeks of our travels before we left home but we knew that our travels through Laos could be arduous so we'd decided to treat ourselves to a bit of R & R in Phuket. This was one of those places we knew we weren't sure how to pronounce so I was pleased to do some research before we got there and find out that, after pronouncing it Fookay for many years, the proper way to say it was Fookette. Good, we won't be showing ourselves up there, then. Or so we thought. Wrong ..... Apparently, the locals have the same problems with the 'f' sound as the Lao people, and they call it Pookette. You can't win, it seems! We arrived at the Pacific Club Hotel too late (10.30 ... read more

24th/25th Where to begin? We're currently sat having breakfast in Phuket airport, waiting for our return flight to Bangkok. Chris' dodgy stomach has returned with a vengeance, so we're going to head over to the travel clinic later just to check that everything's ok - we need to pick up the posh antimalarials for Vietnam anyway. We've had a right palaver trying to find them, and have been sent in circles to various pharmacies as they're not readily available, unlike Doxycycline which is cheap but pretty rough on your body. The nurse assured us that we'd be able to buy them cheaper and easier over here, but it's taken all this time to pin down the travel clinic as the only source - at least these tablets take effect pretty much instantly, meaning we should be ... read more

19th - 23rd We took to the beach once again, this time fully armed with suncream, a hat for the now-bald Chris, sunglasses, new flip flops for the always over-shoed Chris, and plenty of water. Watching him walk in flip flops (for the first time I might add) was like watching a duck finding its feet, and I had to guide him in proper walking technique - "try walking heel to toe rather than landing on your whole foot". Ha! The sea was more pleasant on this day, and although it was a sunny Saturday the streets and beach seemed quieter. Unfortunately, we spent the next few days in various states of pain either in bed or on the toilet - delhi belly has truly caught us with a vengeance. Chris seemed to get it worse ... read more

17th/18th September Thanks to a cheapy deal on Booking.com we're now in the luxurious Hotel Ramada Deevana Patong, 10 mins walk from Patong beach and with beautiful beautiful air conditioning! The hotel seems to be extremely new and practically deserted as it's the low season now. We even have a balcony (overlooking a lot of building work and one of the many mountains), complimentary tea and coffee, and the bed is super cofortable and king-sized! We'd better not get too used to such luxury. Chris now has a dodgy stomach but thankfully the flight was uneventful, if a bit turbulent. Our only options for airport transfer were a metered taxi, or the airport bus which stops to 'officiate' everyone's tickets (i.e. try to aggressively sell you a hotel room/trip/tour) for any length of time. Needless to ... read more
