I spent today cycling around the outskirts of Chiang Rai: once out of the city centre it is quick and easy to get to quiet, rural lanes that are perfect for cycling (they are also flat!). I visited the two most famous sites on the West of the city today, both Buddhist sites built into the cave formations in the hillsides. I found them both a little creepy: the first site, Tham Tu Pu was deserted apart from a monk in a hut next to the cave entrance. You climb a set of steps into a dark, dank cave where it is hard to see anything. As I went in and my eyes adjusted to the light I caught sight of the strange looking Buddha on top of a table: a small, unadorned porcelain creation, gathering ... read more

My plan for today was to travel from Chiang Dao to Tha Ton in the North of Thailand, where it is possible to get a boat to Chiang Rai, down the Kok river, a tributary of the Mekong. The boat leaves daily at 12:30pm but my plans went awry as I had not realised that on Sundays the bus from Chiang Dao does not go as far as Tha Ton but stops at nearby Fang, from where you have to take a shared taxi. Various delays - the bus was late, then got stuck on the winding road to Fang, then I had to wait a while for the shared taxi to arrive - meant I arrived flustered at Tha Ton at around 12:25pm. Worse though was that when I arrived the woman at the boat ... read more

So we've been in chiang rai for a couple of days now and boy is it the rainy season ere! Defo wetter up north, bit like home really........ Had a chilled one yesterday as all the activities have caught up with us, just went to the night bazaar for a beer n a mooch. Been to the white temple today which is amazing to say the least and still unfinished. We got a tuk tuk which we were not entirely sure whether it was licensed or not?.......just an old man n his wife offering to take us there for 300 baht which is nowt to us, our original plan was to cycle but the rain was too heavy. Anyway all was fine and they took us there, waited for us then brought us back. It was ... read more

Chiang Rai was only supposed to be a short stop for us and unless you're interested in touring the wats, you could easily leave after 1 or 2 days. However, we stayed 3 nights in total, the main hook being the night bazaar. After walking the stalls on the first night admiring the colourful wares we came across the food court. 44 booths in total lined two sides of a square, the market stalls were on one side and trailing off in all directions and at the front was a stage. Nothing happening on stage (it was a week night) but plenty of people eating at the table filling the square. The food on offer ranged from battered fried food to hot pots to crunchy insects. We opted for a selection of fried food - squid, ... read more

We're now roughly half way though our amble to the Laos border having returned first to Thailand's northern hub Chiang Mai and then on to Chiang Rai. We now have 5 days left on our visa so we need to be finding the border one way or another (either for simple visa run to remain in Thailand or to cross and move on). The journey, via a series of different vehicles, has been an experience in itself. Mini bus (with travel sick guy), songthaew (so full the tail gate couldn't be shut so staying in was reliant on strong biceps holding the roof and thighs to stay on the broken and tilted outwards seat... i should add that Math, had managed to secure himself a seat in the cab), tuk tuk (an uneventful break believe it ... read more

Today, Sarah and I got picked up by a mini van at 7am to head up to Chiang Rai. The trip firstly consisted of a stop at some hot springs so we could get a coffee or snack - I had a clear noodle soup with pork for breakfast which set me up for the day. We could bathe our feet in the springs. Continuing the journey, we stopped off at the white temple 'Wat Rong Khun'. This was unlike any other temple I've seen on the trip so far. It was white (of course) but also made out of bits of mirror. Walking onto the bridge of the temple, there were hands coming up from the ground (one in which had its middle finger up with a painted red nail). It was surrounded by a ... read more

TodayToday we left Chiang Mai and headed off in a mini bus for Chiang Rai. The journey took around four hours, but we stopped on the way at a farm shop to sample and buy dried fruits. There was a great selection strawberries, pineapple, coconut, mango and various sorts of nuts with different coatings. When we stopped at Chiang Rai we visited a modern day temple which had been designed by a Thai sculptor. It was all white and mirrored glass and there was only one gold ornamental pice which was reminiscent of the old temples. On some of the canopies people could pay a fee to the temple write a message on a charm and the monks would say a prayer for good karma. There were thousands see in the pictures. The temple was surreal depicting hands ... read more

We finished up our 10 day visit to Chiang Mai in quite the good mood. Chiang Mai is an easy place to like. It’s pretty and easy on the budget. The food is good, plentiful and inexpensive. It’s easy to walk almost anywhere a tourist would want to go and there seemed to be something of interest going on every evening that was either free or inexpensive. The museums are excellent and the Wats are gorgeous. During our stay we had a few cloudy, overcast days but all they seemed to do was cool the day down and make Chiang Mai even more engaging. In general, I’m not a big fan of over-touristy towns. Travel to places that have lost their sense of self doesn’t interest me. Even though Chiang Mai has lots of visitors and ... read more

Geo: 19.91, 99.83Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple has got to be the most bizarrely strangely, beautiful, Buddhist Temple I have ever seen, it is stunning and the intricate detail and work involved in it is unbelievable, it really has to be seen to be believed and appreciated. The temple is white with detail being set in silver and mirrors which makes it glisten and shine in the sun and leaves you mesmerized on first sight. Apparently it's color is to symbolize a more pure and contemporary feel from the usual gold, and it definitely achieves being unique. It is on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, around 13 kms away, and as it was on route to get the slow boat from the Thai-Laos border to Luang Prabang, it was perfect. I thought I was ... read more

Vy hats supertoll gefunden, für Jan ... read more
