Where to start... This feels like a million miles away from the craziness of the city. 65 acres of farm land, forest and lake. Another sensory explosion but the smells and noise of traffic replaced by crickets chirping and geckos squawking and the fragrance of jasmine and eucalyptus. After only a week it felt like a luxury to unpack my bag and have my own secure space- It's tiresome repeatedly checking I have all my possessions about my person, especially as invariably I don't (lost items to date: 1 cardigan, 1 cash card, iPad lost and recovered twice). This place was founded by two Belgian guys who travelled independently to the notorious thai detox centre Thamkrabok, located in a monastery where they feed you some herbal shit and you spend 5 days puking. By all accounts ... read more

Well was collected from guesthouse on Soi Rambrutti by a van and taken to Don Muang Airport for my flight to Chiang Rai. Had to pay 200baht at the desk which saved any chance of being ripped off by driver Got to guesthouse found myself In a shared dorm room with 2 blokes. One was from Taiwan and pleasant enough but he did not stop talking lol Dumped my stuff and went to explore. First impressions were of a smaller Chiang Mai, Was beginning not to feel too well though- burning with fever dizzy and queasy so rather than go back to Mr Talkalot in the room I sat and sipped a coke ... read more

Hey All, I slept in a bit this morning which was nice, woke up about 5, but went back to sleep and slept until 8:30. I hate to admit it, but traveling is hard on this 56 year old body. Yesterday was lots of walking and stair climbing, and it catches up to me. After my toast and coffee, I stopped at the front desk and the owner gave me a nice walking map of things to see that I have not seen up to now. And walk I did, for at least 4 1/2 hours with a few stops along the way of course. First stop was the bus station which was very close thank goodness. I bought my ticket on the VIP bus to Chiang Mai for 0900 tomorrow. Now those of you that ... read more

Hey All, I was up rather early this AM, but gave me time to check emails and such. After breakfast was picked up for my day trip up to the Golden Triangle Area. On they way stopped at a temple, and went to this village area where some of the hilltribe people live. They were relocated here for public display which I was very uncomfortable with. The Karen "Long Necks" are from a very remote area of Myanmar, very difficult to find and visit. These people agreed to be relocated to Thailand where their children get an education, and they have jobs posing for the tourist in their new village. OK, I can see where they would want to come where their kids can get an education, and maybe its worth it to them. I just ... read more

Hey All, Was actually up at 7am this morning much to my surprise and ready to hit the ground running. The guest house I am at is really nice, family run place. They serve toast, coffee and fruit for breakfast, but I was starved, so I had a cup a coffee and headed in search of food. I found this place close by that had a buffet style breakfast for 100 baht ($3). WOW, nice. They had fried eggs, little sausages, fried rice and this rice soup called Jok, not sure how you spell it. It also came with coffee, juice and toast. I love Asia!! After breakfast went wandering about getting a feel for the area around my hotel. I ran into a tuk tuk driver and asked how much to drive me around the ... read more

Hey All, I have been tired before, but this is a whole new level. To put it bluntly, I have had 7 hours sleep since I work up last Sunday morning. I got up at 7 am Sunday and worked Sunday night, then slept 3 hours Monday, before working Monday night, then slept 2 ½ hours before working Tuesday night. Ran home Wed. morning and after an 1 ½ sleep was woken up by a call from the hospital about work, and have not slept since then. As I am romping through one airport after another, its all becoming a fog. At this writing I just switched airports in Bangkok and waiting on my Nok Air flight to Chiang Rai. I am working on pure adrenaline here and another cup of strong Thai coffee. Bout time ... read more

Within a day of being back in Chiang Mai we were once again back on another packed mini bus with our bags wedged around us, heading for our next destination…..Chiang Rai. There’s not a lot to do here but the main reason we had decided to come here was so that we could get the slow boat along the Mekong River into Laos. But before that time came, we still had a few days in Chiang Rai, which we had high hopes for, as since we have been in the North of Thailand it seems that every town and city just has so much to offer so we thought the same could be said for Chiang Rai…..which when we turned up, it didn’t take us long to work out there isn’t anything to do really. There ... read more

Geo: 19.91, 99.83 It was lovely meeting Catherine and Janice again, it had been a while since I was last here and I was all broken from my motorbike accident, they're delighted to see me back to my old self as I really was a sight for sore eyes last time and, they're pleased to meet Danny. Janice has a meditation retreat near Chiang Rai and is planning to open up again soon for the start of the season although she is aware there's a lot of work to be done before she would be ready. Danny suggested us going to give her a hand for a few days and she was delighted by the idea and grateful for our support and company, so we arranged to leave the next day and get moving again. And so after some two and a half months, it was finally time to leave Thailand (again). As I continued to make my way towards the northern border with Laos, my last stop before I crossed was Chiang Rai. Incidentally, this was also my first stop in Thailand last year early on in my trip, when I crossed the border from Myanmar. At the time, I'd only spent a quick overnighter before speeding off to catch a flight to Bangkok. So this time, I stayed just a little longer to explore the city a bit more. The current low tourist season certainly made itself felt here. I recall Chiang Rai's streets certainly being more crowded and bustling last year, in July. But now, in September, Chiang Rai feels very, very quiet. And walking around at night, ... read more

Around 13km from Chiang Rai is a modern temple, Wat Rong Khun, known locally as "The White Temple". The cycle there was uninteresting, along the Superhighway, but the temple was well worth the effort, one of the most extraordinary pieces of architecture I have ever seen. The photographs do not do it justice as it is covered with tiny pieces of mirror, so the whole structure glitters in the sun and looks very surreal. Walking across the bridge into the temple you pass hundreds of sculptured hands rising out of the ground, supposedly symbolising want, and a mythological-looking protector. Inside the temple is painted with strange murals featuring contemporary people. The area around the temple is also interesting for cycling as it took me through coffee plantations, most of which have a small coffee shop attached ... read more
