We are writing to you from our hostel in very hot Chiang Rai, where we arrived yesterday. Since our last update we've been relaxing and sight-seeing in Chiang Mai, Pai and Chiang Rai. We decided against going to the Tiger Kingdom in Chiang Mai as it was super expensive and we felt sorry for the tigers being exploited for the amusment of tourists. So, we went to the Zoo, where we saw some very lazy hippos, various lazy big cats, and some lazy pandas and bears. Overall, we established that all animals are lazy in this zoo (probably due to the heat...). The zoo also had some 'sheep' (definitely goats), some dribbling giraffes and men selling meat on sticks that you supposedly put into the tiger cage to feed them.....Thailand loves health and safety... That evening ... read more

Feb 19th, Three is the magic number What a beautiful end to a beautiful city and positive start to an incredible journey. Last night we made it safely back to Chiang Mai where we got to have a farewell dinner with Beckah and a few of her close friends at a Burmese restaurant. The food was so delicious and sooooo spicy. I found out later that Beckah told them to kick it up a notch. Needless to say we were sweating after the first bite, 2 bottles of water later I was more than satisfied! What a treat. The next morning went just as smoothly as the last. We were able to grab some breakfast before getting in a van that picked us up from our hostel. Our all inclusive package includes transportation to the border ... read more

Day 1 Ignoring the persistent calls of the tuk tuk drivers, Dean dug out the Lonely Planet bible to South East Asia for some advice on where to stay. Along the way we met up with the Swiss couple from the boat and we all headed to a recommended budget hotel. Minimalist in design and style (not Scandanavian funky but more prison block chic), it was clean and cheap. Within a few minutes we had snaffled up the remaining rooms. Phew. Located nearby, the night market provided us with our first foray into Thai cuisine since 2001. Well, obviously we have eaten Thai food since then (number 19 is Eleanor's favourite meal at Mee Dees in Springvale) but I was so looking forward to the delicious spicy salads and noodles I remembered from our last time ... read more

When we weren’t busy indulging and pampering ourselves (or nursing someone back to health!), we did actually manage to take in some of the sights, sounds, and flavours of this culturally rich and diverse region. Thank goodness we had allowed ourselves almost 3 weeks here, which was still barely enough. Northern Thailand is rich in natural beauty, extraordinary wildlife, and with an impressive cultural heritage. The biggest draw for tourists is perhaps the fascinating hill tribe communities, the ethnic minorities referred to in Thai as “chao khao” which translates literally as “mountain people”. Among the largest and best known hill tribes are the Hmong, Karen, and Akha. The most recognizable and iconic are the Kaya (known as the Longnecks), and the Kor Yor (also known as the Big Ear tribe) and yet these are ironically less ... read more

Day 1 Opting for the slightly fancy slow boat to Thailand (not the public one nor the expensive one) meant we would have a somewhat leisurely cruise along the Mekong. At 7am we set sail with only eight passengers on board: a Swiss couple, a German gentleman, a honeymooning couple from Sydney and us. It all sounds very Agatha Christie...Anyway, having picked up some 95% DEET mozzie repellent in one of Luang Prabang's many pharmacies, I was supremely confident that any mosquito venturing near me would bounce off my shield. I was radiating DEET like a glow worm. The onboard breakfast consisted of croissants, chocolate Danish and strong Laos coffee. Munching on these delicacies, we passed fishermen, buffalo and peanut plants, with mist covered mountains looming in the distance. At times we were passed by the ... read more

Most tourists going to Thailand don’t get any further north than Chiang Mai, so they miss out on the delightfully bucolic city of Chiang Rai just 2-3 hours to the north, and all of the fantastic sights within easy driving distance of this city. The main reason travellers have for venturing this far north is a stop-over on the way to or from Myanmar or Laos, and even they rarely get to see all that Chiang Rai has to offer. Chiang Rai is the last large city heading north in Thailand before the border with Myanmar. It has a long and interesting history, having once been the capital of the Mangrai dynasty and the original home of the famous Emerald Buddha, now located in Wat Phra Keow in Bangkok’s Grand Palace. Chiang Rai is a quirky ... read more

Due to the conflict of the military regime in Burma in the 1980s – 1990s, the Karen hill tribe fled to the Thai Borders. The Government of Thailand had accepted them and located the Long Neck Karen in the Ban Mai Nai Son refugee village, 15km from the Mae Hon Son Province in the North of Thailand. Since then the Long Neck Karen became the attraction to the tourist in this region. There are about 600 Karens todate in the northern Thailand. They are also known as the Padaung. The Long Neck Karen started at a very tender age. They started at the age of five years old. As they grew older they kept adding the rings until they could not do so. They will solder the brass rings to add the length they chose. It ... read more

Wat Rong Khun is the name of this White Temple. It was designed by the famous Chalermchai Kositpipat, started building in the 1998 and it is still in the process of building the rest of the buildings along side of the White Temple. It is located at Ban Rong Khun, about 13km from the city Chiang Rai. The White Temple is painted all white, pasted with tiny silvery mirrors to make it unique and magnificent, with many statues in Thai style. I particularly like the two demonic figures in dragon bodies that guard the bridge of the temple. On the pool hundreds of hands in different sizes reaching out from the hell realm awaiting your hand to pull them up, that looked quite scary but artistic, reminded me of the movie "The Mummy Returned". In the ... read more

Things have been so busy here, so much to take in. And the internet situation has been limited since our hotel only offers free wi-fi in the lobby. By the time we get home and eat we are soooo tired, or at least I am. Ernest sits up to edit all his pictures but he can do that in room without internet. Today we go up into the northern mountains of Thailand, close to border of Myannmar, China and Laos. Although Thai government has done a lot to help modernize the life of the hill tribes with electricity, clean water, education and trying to stop old traditions that do harm like smothering the second twin when born cause that one is evil, then banishing the parents from the village for a year, these people still live ... read more
