So that's it for Myanmar! Just a short one hour flight from Heho near Kalaw to Tachileik, and I was at the Thai border of Mae Sai. Of course Myanmar presented some last minute memories, as I met two interesting Americans on the pick-up ride (lined completely with plastic egg crates!) from Kalaw to Heho airport. Scott was a white guy from New Jersey and fresh out of college, preparing for Grad school in Taiwan (!) studying wildlife conservation, in Mandarin I must add! Great to see a fresh grad not heading towards the *evil* banking/ consulting track! He'd already been to several places in Southeast Asia before, and seemed to speak with genuine passion about the conservation cause. Oh, and by the way, he also spoke French and Japanese! You know, just your usual quadrilingual ... read more

Chiang Rai is a sleepy town full of arty crafts and bright, buzzing night markets that sells anything from Thai cuisine, 'same, same' t-shirts to paper latins to Hello Kitty copy key rings... All worth buying, but nothing worth keeping :) So, no surprise chaps, that this sleepy town isn't really perky in the evenings. Spent the second night drinking a rather dodgy green cocktail at this bar on the main touristy strip (an expereince not worth reminising). However, with a stroke of luck we met this English dude who introduced us to the Peace (reggae) Bar; a slightly psychedelic, trancy place with cool graffiti everywhere in honour of Bob Marley and One Love. A positive vibe just ozzed from this place that we spent every possible evening there getting to know the bar tender (too ... read more

When we finally dragged ourselves away from Pai for the second time we travelled 6 hours East back through Chiang Mai all the way to Chiang Rai. Our first night here we went exploring the local markets. The day market was just food and it was crazy! The raw meat and sweet cakes meant there was an abundance of wasps and flys mixed in with the many humans crowding the streets. Despite selling only food, nothing looked ediable to either of us, although some of it looked fairly interesting, like the bright turquiose mussels. We left in search of the Night Bazaar but ended up walking round in circles and should have gone back to the main point of reference for making your way round the city which was a huge and very ornate golden clock ... read more

We arrived at Chiang Rai. It is much smaller than i expected but still enough for us to do to spend a few days chilling out here before we do a border run. We visited the white temple yesterday. The art work inside was amazing, it was a shame that we could not take pictures. The tuk tuk driver agreed a price and then changed it half wa so we gave him the appropriate amount (still far too much) and made our own way back. I was slightly annoyed as we only went with him to give him some business as we had said we would previously. I think we shall just stick to the local buses from now as it is far cheaper and people dont rip off. We also have some random guy who ... read more

Days 12, 13 and 14 Yes! I am really unsure of the days now, but did figure it out that it is Thursday. The trekking in the bush would make you quite envious Robert. It took me a while to figure out why it all felt so surreal and gloriously familiar and today I realised it was because of the amazing times I had in my 20’s and 30’s tramping in the bush and staying out in the wops with few amenities and having to make do. Well that will give you an indication of how it felt for us except that there were some very definite differences. The heat was our biggest enemy. It took your breath away and the perspiration just ran from my body. In fact I had a pee at 11am on ... read more

Chiang Rai was our last stop in northern Thailand and our stay there had a few ups and a few downs. One of the downs was our very damp guesthouse room which came complete with mould on the bathroom ceiling. Another down was spending, what seemed like hours, getting lost and walking in circles in the heat, trying to find a temple on a hill to where the Rough Guide had beckoned us with the promise of a fine river view. However, when we eventually found it, the view was distinctly average, with no sign of the river. On the plus side we enjoyed perusing the stalls of the weekend night market, which had some pretty cool non-tourist-tat for sale, and also enjoyed food from the day market. The themed décor at Cabbages and Condoms kept ... read more

Like anyone travelling in South East Asia, I have visited a ridiculous number of temples. Some amazing (Angkor Wat), while many seem blah after you have seen too many. So itis with great surprise that the strangest temple I have seen in almost 4 months of travelling is one that we stumbled upon between Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. I call it the White Temple because I have no idea what its real name is, but it is way more than its obvious white colouring. While white means purity and peace in the West, it represents death in Asian cultures and death is what was on display at this temple. From hanging heads to demon sculptures, there was nothing pure or peaceful about this temple. It was absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, we weren't dressed properly to go ... read more

We took an extremely comfortable 3 hr ‘VIP’ bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai; the time flew by. We went quickly to Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort, which was unfortunately a little outside the town center. We freshened up and were rushing out again to see Wat Rong Khun, the ‘White Temple’. This temple is different from most in that an artist built it with sci-fi murals of Darth Vader and other pop culture icons inside. The outside of the temple was ornate, impressive, and a bit other-worldly – with skulls and horns coming out of a ‘moat’ in front of the entrance. Unfortunately our hotel was wrong about the Wat’s hours of operation, and it was closed when we arrived. Still, the outside of the Wat was impressive to see. We then met up ... read more

The first thing I noticed about Chiang Rai was that it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. I expected it to be a small to medium sized town but it is quite large and businesses along the highway stretch for quite a few kilometres. I stayed in the guesthouse area of town for 5 days and I found it very peaceful with a laidback atmosphere. There is a simple restaurant ran by an older woman nearby that serves up a very nice massmun curry with rice for $2. So I ended up eating there quite often. The first night in town I ran into Bjorn and Ellen from Belgium who I had met and traveled with a couple of weeks earlier in Laos. The following night while I was eating at the ... read more

It was that time again to do my visa, this time I had to go to MaeSai so that I could cross the border into Myanmar to get (try) my 60visa extension. I wanted to spend a couple of days in ChiangRai first so I left MaeNaChorn on the sunday. It took me 12hrs to finally reach my guesthouse! After Rut took me to MaeCheam and I caught the sonteyose to ChiangMai I switched bus terminals all pretty smoothly but then it seemed like everyone wanted to go to ChiangRai and I had to cue for an hour to buy a ticket. The next bus with an available seat was a 3hr wait. There is nothing to really do out by the bus station so I was a book then as it was Chinese NewYear there ... read more
