America has its fair share of commercial holidays. I won't list them, but you can imagine which holidays were created simply to sell things, and which holidays over time have become extremely commercialized. Well, in Korea, there's a day called Pepero Day. Now Pepero is a candy treat of sorts. It means "thin, like a stick" and is simply a thin cylindrical cookie-stick dipped in chocolate. Most Holidays are commemorating some special date, or event. Now, why would there be a holiday celebrating candy? Does it have some historical or religious significance? Or is there simply no shame at all in being direct about the commercialism of the holiday? I'm going to go with the latter, because it turns out that Pepero is manufactured solely by Lotte which is a huge department store in Korea. They ... read more

Saturday, November 12, 2006-- a chilly autumn day. In fact, one of the chilliest since I've been in Yeosu. I woke up on that day at a bright and early 7:00. A non-working day, but, for me, a day soon to be filled with hard work, wine, and plenty of cultural lessons. 7:30 a.m., my co-teacher picked me up to go to the bus station to then go to the Suncheon "marathon" (as it seems all distance-running races are called here) where I would run a 10k (along with about 6 or 7 other teachers, most of whom were running the 20k or half marathon). I was excited to be running again (in races at least), and ready for a good (though cold) day. Only one other teacher was running the 10k with me, so we ... read more

We have now moved into our nice new flat or apartment as they call it here. We are very lucky to have found such a big place as we have SEEN some horror stories - BASICALLY pokey bedsits and apparantly one teacherWAS RUMOURED to have been living in a classroom for 3 months !! Because Korea is ten times the global average in population density a lack of space means there are thousands of highrise flats or apartments called an "Apateu" OFTEN VERY SMALL. . Well it certainly paid off to shop around for a job with decent accomadation as we have landed a Brand new - Yeollip Jutaek "small size apartment buildings" of under three stories. From our bedroom window we have a view of the shops, hundreds of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and Andy's hagwon! ... read more

We were up at the ridiculous hour of 5.30am (The price of doing an official army tour) and headed to the USO office in central Seoul. From there we had a two hour bus journey with a Korean guide trying to be funny and unfortunately failing fairly miserably. Once we arrived we got a presentation from a US soldier and then met our guide. He was a hilarious soldier from Florida who took the seriousness of the location in his stride. Our first stop was at the front line where soldiers from South Korea stand and face their North Korean counterparts with about 20 metres between them. Very surreal place to be. From there we visited the meeting room where negotiation between the two sides takes place. It has a door on one side into the ... read more

After sitting on the floor of a train for 2 and half hours we made it back to Seoul, and back to the same guesthouse. Since we were going to be up very early the next morning for the DMZ we headed straight to bed. (see seperate entry for DMZ). That evening when we returned from the DMZ we met up Roisin, Stephen, Craig and Amanda and went for a tradional Korean dinner in Insadong. We enjoyed some great food and some local beverages including soju, bamboo leaf wine and rice wine. Afterwards we met Krista in Route 66 for some Long Island Ice Teas before heading to Itaewon for some dancing and more crazyiness. The next morning (well actually it was the afternoon, we crawled out of bed and headed to Myeong-dong with Rosin and Stephen. ... read more

Steve's birthday fell on our parent teacher interviews night; not the most useful day to have your birthday on. He did get a nice breakfast which his lovely wife got up early to make, and his department surprised him with Baskin Robbins ice cream and sang him happy birthday in the middle of interviews (kinda fun!). We celebrated his birthday by hosting a grape juice and cheese party at our appartment. We had a lot of people stop by for food and to wish Steve a happy birthday. It was a neat mixture of people - we have friends who are first year teachers up to friends who are grandparents, and every stage of life in between. Kids were playing cards in our bedroom, babies were being passed around, young adults were scarfing down pizza in ... read more

We caught a bus from Sokcho to Chuncheon, a major city in Northern Korea. Ciaran managed to "mildly" upset the bus driver over where we put our bags but after a brief standoff we were on our way. Two and half hours later we arrived and found ourselves a dodgy motel shaped like a castle to stay in. The next day we spent most of the morning trying to find the major tourist attraction in the city - the lake which we eventually stumbled across. We visited the statue park beside the lake and a Korean war monument dedicated to Ethiopian Soldiers who died in the war. After that we wandered around but found very little to do. After a lot of walking we headed back and watched a movie in our dodgy motel. Next Stop Seoul ... read more

Okey dokey, so last week I decided to check out the second part of the the Busan Biennale with two of my most favouritest students, Angela and Chloe. All of the classes change every two months but Angela and Chloe's class held a revolt and demanded the class should stay the same and I should still be their teacher. It's really cool, I teach them at 11am every morning and I would now consider every member of the class my friend- probably too much actually- they get to know it all! But it's awesome to walk into a room full of friendly faces and have a good moan about life, love (or lack of it) and everything. Anyhoo off we trotted to Centum Park in Haeundae to see the sculpture exhibition. When we arrived we really ... read more

Hello everyone! Our latest travelblog begins with our Halloweeen pictures! This year we went to a Halloween costume party here in English Village with many of our fellow teachers and friends. The party started at our local English Village Pub "Double Decker," and finished at "Saturn" - one of the residence halls here. As you can see, Larry and I went as a butterfly and a butterfly-catcher this year! We didn't have a lot of time and resources to get together some really good costumes this year, but we think we did alright...(Although at first glance, a lot of people thought Larry was a fisherman!) Our friends had some really fun costumes too, including secret agent spies, "couple t-shirt" outfits (when Korean couples wear matching clothes), and even some drag too! It was a lot of ... read more

Ilsan is a satellite city of Seoul and this is where we live and work. In Ilsan we have 2 favourite places, Lake Park and Lafesta. Lafesta is a hub of activity, full of shopping, eating and drinking. We go there several times a week. Many of the people that we know who live in other areas in and around Seoul love coming to where we live. It is a wealthy area which is constantly expanding. We never really get bored where we live and have made some good Korean and Western friends. ... read more
