Trevor and I arrived in Seoul this morning (Sunday) at 5am, with a 12 hours layover ahead of us. We wandered around the airport for hours, grabbed some food, did a lot of napping. After boring ourselves of the airport, we decided to venture outside. It was a modest 20 degrees outside, quite muggy though... We headed over to a convenience store and got ourselves a few Budweisers and had ourselves a toast - to Asia! Next was the internet, we're currently in the Best Western leeching internet time in the inconspicuous Business Centre, I think this one guy is catching on though as we look nothing like the guests here... oh well! We're going to keep exploring until our flight to Bangkok departs this evening at 5:30pm. We shoould be reunited with Jason and Ryan ... read more

I went on a Temple Stay with Younglim, her friend, and Sue. We went to Daejon, which is about an hour and a half away by bus. On Saturday, we went on a walk with the monk, went to a ceremony, and then to a lecture on Buddhism. On Sunday, there was a ceremony at 5 am, breakfast at 6:30, and another ceremony at 10. I never bowed so much in my life. ... read more

So last weekend Sunny and I went to the Chinatown Cultural Festival. To be fair there wasn't that much going on but I did get a cute couple of kiddie pics! And some dude was making intricate sugar lollies which was pretty cool. I wasn't really in the mood as I'd been hoping to go to Thailand over CHristmas and new Year to catch up with the King of Stink (that's Paul or Pikey P to some of u guys) but had been told I couldn't have the holiday as it was within the first 6 months of my contract. I was so so gutted- kind of dreading Crimble here- I love it back in the UK- last year was 12 days of eating, drinking and being merry with even a sprinkling of snow-totally perfect. I thought ... read more

..is what I saw on a childs t-shirt today. I've also seen 'Juicy Bunny Slope' and 'When Girl and Boy fall in Love- Little Doggy'. Another winner was 'There is nothing funny about a one eyed doggy'- which immediatley makes you think there IS something funny about a one eyed doggy (apologies to all visually impaired dogs- no offence intended) Add to that a committed Christian wearing a t-shirt that had on the back of it every kind of drug known to man and we're onto a winner! Who thinks this stuff up!... read more

A belated Happy Chuseok to you all... We hope you had a nice Korean Thanksgiving. We've had a great few weeks. By virtue of a shift change, we managed to get ourselves a sweet little 12-day break...perfect timing, one might say, for a visit from the parents! Hoorah! Gareth's Mum and Dad arrived on a Friday evening, and we introduced them to Korea by getting up at the crack of dawn to explore the Demilitarized Zone and to step into North Korea. It was quite the surreal experience, with much propaganda and posturing from both sides of the world's most heavily fortified fence. Part two of their introduction to Korea was our arrival "home" at English Village, the second most surreal place in Korea. We spent a couple of days relaxing around the village and stumbling ... read more

Ok so not last week but the week before (really must update this more regularly!) it was Chuseok which is basically the Korean Thanksgiving. What with being British n all that I wasn't exactly sure what Thanksgiving was (ok so being British AND being and idiot) but apparently it's when you give thanks to the harvest for being prosperous. So Koreans get a holiday that lasts about four days depending upon when it falls (I think our equivalent is Harvest Festival- from what I remember this is when 7 year olds in school uniform roam the streets on mass and force tinned goods onto biddies- kind of like what I did last Christmas too...altho I wasn't seven....anyway..) Initially I was pretty worried about Chu-seok as I didn't know what I'd do to fill the time and ... read more

Hello Everyone, I know it's been a long time since I've updated...more than a month now that I think about it, but Jackie and I have been busy. First, unless you read through the complete blog that I last posted, you won't know that Jackie and I are getting married. Our original plan was to marry in Singapore, but due to beaurocratic regulations, we have decided to wait. The plan now looks like we'll be getting married in January, probably on the 20th. Right now, we are also planning to get married in Denver with the hope of attracting lots of family and friends with the possibility of hitting the slopes in Colorado for a bit of skiing before and after the wedding. Anyway, we are now back in Seoul after spending time in Thailand, Malaysia ... read more

Hi Everybody! Sorry that I haven't been able to write. We have been very busy and when I have tried, the computers have gone down. We are thoroughly enjoying our trip and are making do when there are language problems. We have met many new friends, especially in Korea. We stayed on base in an exceptionally nice 300 room hotel with health club, Starbucks, several restaurants, etc. The Asians serve you many dishes with a meal. It is fun to try new foods. If I like it I eat it, often not knowing what it is. So far, we haven't gotten sick. Walt has probably eaten about half a pack of Pepto Bismol tablets trying to be careful. I found Seoul to be beautiful at night. The Han River runs through the town and is about ... read more

Today I’m not sure who was more excited, the staff or the kids. Our Safari ride at Everland last week was at night, so we didn’t really get a chance to see the animals clearly. Today was much different. It was a great day for mid October. The sun was shining and the temperature was about 28°C. I feel for you all back home! The kids seemed pretty tame when we met in the school gym prior to departing for the buses. This didn’t last long. The bus ride was quiet for the most part because all of the children are rummaging through their bags eating snacks that their parents pack them. I think I saw about 10 varieties of chips, candy, crackers and cookies being eaten. In addition, just about every kid had a different ... read more

Greetings from the recently rated number one e-government friendly nation on earth where nothing remains unblighted by technology. Imprinted in bold white letters right under the name of my school on its 50-year old brick surface is the following: seouldorim.es.kr, which I assume is not a porn site. In spite of all that, I don't have Internet access. They wanted the entire year's payment in advance (that would have broken the bank several times over) because apparently they were afraid I was going to flee the country momentarily. Truly, I have thought about defecting to the North due to my well-established love for communist countries (if not the leaders who run them), but I had misgivings mostly concerning whether I would ever be able to see my family again. Mom, you can stop panicking now! Anyway, ... read more
