This weekend, all of the Fulbright ETA's were invited to the American Ambassador's residence for a big Thanksgiving meal. I, of course, was all about eating some turkey this Thanksgiving and headed up to Seoul on Friday, prepared to eat big platefuls of the stuff come Saturday. Saturday morning, some Fulbright friends and I hit up the huge Kyobo bookstore (of course, focusing our efforts on the English section-- they had loads of novels and every other kind of book--how exciting!) before heading over to the Ambassador's house (yes, we actually ate our dinner in the Ambassador's house) to receive our turkey, gravy, ham, mashed potatoes, steamed veggies, salads, bread, and pumpkin/apple/chocolate/cherry pie. How amazing! It was great to see everyone again, though briefly, and it was nice to be able to celebrate an American Thanksgiving ... read more

Incheon airport is uber-big but pretty empty apart from the large number of currency exchanges…somehow we managed to purchase a bus ticket, find the correct bus, get off at the right station and drag our luggage down a rather dinky alley way to our hostel. Serious sense of acheivement woo! Our hostel isn't bad as hostels go. Small but cheap, and in a great location in downtown Insadong. Last night we experimented with the subway system and went looking for food after. We ended up at some korean diner where everything was in korean, but we managed to order a few things...the kimichi flavoured yaki-soba was probably not such a good idea though… This morning we got up super early and headed to Namyeong station and down to the USA building where they run half-day ... read more

Greetings and Salutations... The lord's light shined apon me and forth with it came a well endowed bottle of gin... so here you have my present situation... I'm now forty, female and have a beard... Phase 1 - Liquid and Discombobulation Last Wednesday night saw us in the Irish bar (again) for a trivia night... wasn't going to stay too late, but as usual J&T (they misspelt gin) kept me alive and well until 3am when we finished our quizzy action (my team came second... we cleaned up in the English Linguistics round). There I met a rather nice fella from Long Island, we ended up on the same team... turns out he studied comparative literature... interesting guy. I also met an Aussie by the same of Simon, who talks all together too much, but managed ... read more

Well here's my first entry, in my first blog! Its pretty bloody exciting to be honest, but not haf as exciting as I'm hoping the next 12 months will be. At present, I'm working in a middle school here in Hanam, teaching English to some crazy kids. I don't wanna spout off about them too much here, all I really want to say is that they can be absolutely lovely, but they can be little horrors too.... So I've been in Korea for 6 months already, and my present contract finishes on May1st 2007. My plan then is to fly one-way to Bangkok (courtesy of my lovely employers here) and spend 2-3 months in SE Asia if my finances allow. I don't want to spend too much time in Thailand as I have been there twice ... read more

So it is the most wonderful time of the year. No really, ask anyone. Well, anyone who has spent an October or even a November in Korea. Autumn is absolutely amazng. Even today, as the snow that has been collecting dirt on the sides of the slushy roads in Calgary melts on a rare temperate November afternoon, the leaves (some still completely green and lush) cling tightly to the branches of the big, protective trees that line every "heavenly" street in Bundang. They say Bundang means "under heaven" in Korean. If you can't get to heaven yet, the next best thing is this little town. I thought it was a little overly dramatic (yes, even I can recognize melodrama....), however, I'm not so sure now. I love all seasons, and to pick a favorite would be ... read more

We arrived by train to Busan in the evening, and grabbed a taxi to our motel. Upon arrival at the motel we realised we did not have Ronans camera! We think we must have left it in the taxi. The next day we stopped in at the local police station to report the camera missing. That was an experience in itself as we sat down at a table with 6 Korean girls who were having lunch and between them, they managed to translate for the police. We spent the afternoon wandering around the busy area of Seoymeon. After two nights in Busan we decided it was about time to do some sightseeing, so we visited Jungang Park and then Yandusan Park in Nampodong, which is where Busan Tower is located. It is 120 metres tall and ... read more

After a few complications on the Seoul subway system, we eventually found our way to the train station and grabbed a KTX train to Gyeongju. On arrival we found ourselves a cheap motel, tired from a day of travelling we had a bite to eat and headed to bed. The next day we visited Gyeongju National Park (or Tumulus Park). The park is made up of large mounds of earths which are graves of ancient kings and other royalties. The park was packed with school kids on tours. We soon realised that we were a far bigger attraction for them than the graves, we quickly found ourselves surrounded by screaming 8 year olds all trying to shake our hands and practice their English. After numerous photos, we made our escape to Banwolseong. Gyeongju was once the ... read more

So my buddy Warren asked me one of my first days if I had had a Johnny Cash Dump yet. I didn't know what he was talking about... One of the best things about Korea is obviously the extreme cultural differences. Eating in Korea can be nothing like eating in a Western country (the States). Sure, Korea is a developed country and they have taken their fair share of ideas from the West and introduced them into their culture. You can go to an Outback Steakhouse, TGIFriday's, McDonald's, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or even Baskin Robbins if you'd like. Or you can go to some knock-off Cheers restaurant that serves "quesadillas" and "mozzarella sticks." But that's not what I'm looking for in Korea. If I wanted to eat at those places, I would've just stayed in the ... read more
