Hi everyone, Well have arrived in Singers after the llllllooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggg flight which was made longer by 2 mad grannies sitting next to me who didn't understand the televsion system! First impressions of Singapore is that its hot. The heat is quite oppresive when the sun is not out. Have been lazing by the pool in the afternoon for the last few days and doing sight seeing in the evening coz it is so hot. Singapore is a really nice place. It is really clean and everyone has been really friendly. The only thing I could complain about is how anglicised everything is. They have even got Topshop, Marks and spencers and borders to name a few. I haven't exactly got the culture shock I had expected but I'm sure Bangkok will be a huge kick up ... read more

- FOOD: EXCELLENT plane food; cheap noodles at one of the MANY roadside cafes; huge grapefruit type fruit; a tea brewing ceremony; egg brewed in tea for 8 hours; mooncakes; hot chicken curry; sweet, bright pink cakes made from almond, cashew and coconut; Gulam Jamun - a ball of cream cheese in a pot of syrup. - PEOPLE: Polite and friendly. The whole population eating on the roadside. Nepalese man at a temple giving me orchids for good luck. - AREA: So smart and clean. High rise, modern tower blocks with greenery surrounding them; space age CBD; wide lanes of traffic; narrow streets of Chinatown; Little India; temples and mosques galore; Chinese Heritage Centre. Easy to use train system. Lovely, clinical feel hostel. Safe feel. - WEATHER: Some grey sky but oh my god, how very ... read more

Heya peeps! Hope you are all very well. Well as the title suggests we are now on our last leg of Asia. Singapore!! And may I say how much fun we are having here. Arrived on the 8th in the evening after a 7 hour train ride. It was fine really apart from spluttering Malaysians and snoring old gents. Singapore customs are very strict which is good I guess. They carry a death sentence for anyone caught trafficking drugs. Which if you were innocenyt is kinda crap! What struck us most about this city is how clean it is. It is so so pretty and is very well kept. We made our way out to Sentosa Island yesterday. WELL worth it. It is quite simply amazing...absolutely beautiful! We gota free bus out and once we arrived, ... read more

Well, I've made it! Currently sitting in a wonderfully cool (air-conditioning is a god-send) internet cafe attached to my guesthouse in Bangkok, Shanti Lodge, rightfully called an "oasis" in Bangkok... but I'm getting ahead of myself. I arrived bleary-eyed in Singapore after a long day in transit, and was ushered from the airport to the free hotel, which, although not the nicest I've been in, was definately the last bit of luxury I'll have for a while (I had a whole double bed to myself! A shower! A sit-down toilet!). Singapore itself was at once exactly what I expected (modern, almost Western) and the opposite (it really wasn't all that clean - maybe Canada's forever skewed my sense of cleanliness - it was impossible to find a public wastebasket). I spent the day wandering around, having ... read more

Well my lack of planning anything is asia has caught up with me. I spent all day yesterday on the phone with airlines and reading travel info. I am stuck here an extra day, but leave tomorrow for Bangkok then overland it to near Puket Thailand to learn to scuba on the island of Koa Tao and that area for about 8 days. Then most likely overland it to Phnom Phen in Cambodia where I do a jungle motorcycle tour for 7 days then fly back to Singapore to spend 6 days in Bali but I still need to buy that flight. Istanbul was cool but 5 days was one day too long for me really. I am still suffering from drinking some bad water there and I hope it clears up soon. I think Asia ... read more

We got our internet access last week and our shipment from the US arrived on Friday which means that we have our computer so we can update the blog! So much has happened in the past two weeks. I will try to break it up into a couple postings. Our first day in Singapore (Wednesday) was pretty mellow since we were still adjusting to the time change. Phil’s mom took us to a local mall to show us what we might expect to see in Penang. Asian malls are not totally different from US malls in the kinds of shops they have, but their largest store is usually a supermarket instead of a department store. Some of the bigger ones have both. The particular grocery store we visited was Cold Storage. I was surprised and pleased ... read more

We have arrived in Singapore! Oregon gave us a very fitting send off, 60 degrees and raining which was a surprise after the perfect summer weather we had been having. Our flight between Portland and LA was as normal as it could be thought it was delayed a bit by the lightning and hail. I do love Oregon :-) The topper for that leg of our journey was the 8-year-old who was belching on the backs of our heads while we waited for the plane to arrive. LAX wasn't too bad. Our walk to the international terminal was quite nice due to the ocean breeze that was blowing in. After checking in for our 9:20pm flight we had dinner and waited for the plane to arrive. When we got on we were very surprisedat how nice ... read more

On arrival at Singapore Airport, we were greeted by the cutest baby you have ever seen (we may be a bit biased - but she is gorgeous). Gill finally got to meet her niece Chloe face to face. We were staying with Jenny and Simon whilst were waiting for our Vietnamese visas to be processed. Our first stop was back to their appartment and then off to the pub to catch up with Simon (who was in dire need of Gill's physio services as he had slipped a disc!!!). The next day all the girls went shopping on Orchard Road - including a stop at Marks and Spencer! Jenny had organised for us to have breakfast at Singapore Zoo - which involved sitting down with the orangutangs, whilst they too enjoyed a fruit buffet. Gill decided ... read more

I went to Changi prison museum and chapel today before going to the airport. The tour that I had was very touching, thought-provoking and of course, saddening. I'd read a lot of Changi, such as The Diary of A Girl in Changi, and other books from Australian men held there. Awful stories of 10,000 Aussie guys in a prison area built for 1,000. I'm getting more and more of a rounded view on the war, now having been to Hiroshima twice, Okinawa, the Battle Box and Changi Prison here, Nanjing (Nanking), the Australian War Memorial and other small sites and memorials of significance, where you can learn something of it all. I've been to history class in German High Schools I went to and have spoken to various Japanese and Chinese people about the war while ... read more

I had planned for a ten-hour lay-over in Singapore on my way to Capetown from Taipei. It was my second time in Singapore, having been there once in 1999, though it was with a tour group. First off, I hate tour groups. They control your time, and you always have to wait for the slowest in the group to get ready. And the Chinese ones at least, they always take you to eat at the Chinese restaurant no matter what country you’re in. I think I could get a more cultural experience from watching a foreign film than by traveling with a tour group. That’s enough of my tirade. Singapore is a smorgasbord of cultures. You start with your native Malays, then pour on some Chinese, dabble on some South Asians, and finally sprinkle some English ... read more
