5,4,3,2,1,Happy Birthday Singapore. Today is such an exciting day here. Tomorrow is not just National Day, but also the country's 40th birthday. So the countdown to the 12 midnight fireworks is all very exciting and big news. I met some really lovely people on the Red Lantern Tour that I ended up spending The Countdown with. We'd already shared beer to wash away the taste of some awful Singaporean fruit and Indian dessert-cake we'd tried on the tour. We'd already walked around Little India and Geylang prostitution area together so decided to keep hanging out and find our way to a good fireworks spot. We ended up as a group of 5, two couples and little me. The others, hopefully in a photo I get on here shortly, are Tony and Caecilia, BJ and Di. They ... read more

We were definitely leaving Indonesia, our first Lion Air flight took us to Jakarta, whose airport we did not even leave, some hours later we boarded the following plane to Kuala Lumpur. Air Asia offers really cheap flights, according to the rules which apply to all no-frills airlines. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flights are (we got a flight Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur for only EUR 15), there is no food or drink of any kind served, except if you pay for it. This is all perfectly fine for us, we have never understood why meals absolutely have to be served on short flights. The really unusual feature of Air Asia, though, is the fact that the seats are not numbered, which results in people fighting for the best places, we only wanted to sit together, ... read more

I went on the cable car today, to just sit back and get a good view. God, I need to get off my feet already! It was really lovely, just before sunset, over the water. It's still really hot, so there was a bit of a breeze that made it nice. The cars actually go really fast - I was surprised. I took a few nice water, cruise ship, Sentosa island and Singapore skyline photos. I went from Mount Faber, past Harbourfront to Sentosa. On the way back, I just went to Harbourfront, as it's easier to get home from there. Speaking of that, the MRT (subway) here is excellent by the way. I haven't braved the buses yet, but there's not really any need to. Ive had a good time with the transport so far ... read more

Little India/ Kampung Glam/ The Arab Quarter (North East of the City) Today I've done a walking tour of my area, the names listed in the heading. FASCINATING!! Words and even photos won't describe the little streets, the stalls, the people..... ......the fact that you suddenly find amazing buildings all the time, just by accident, cause you happen to look up a little lane while you are crossing the road, or you see something shining behind something else! It's a fabulous place I could definately live in, with a mixture of temples, mosques and a lot more. My day included, just to give you some idea: little and big markets, such as * Zhujiao Hawker Centre, * Tekka Centre, * Little India Arcade, * Albert St Mall, * Bugis Village stalls * and Thieves Market. S I N G A P O R E A bit scared of walking around the local area at the moment, I went out and headed for the busiest street I could see to hail a cab. When you walk outside various types of guys start following you. But i'm very calm and fine with it already and I flagged a cab and got out of there fine. I decided to just go somewhere that'd be happening at night. I had a few hours before I wanted to go to sleep (though I WAS exhausted, I just didn't want to waste any time). My cabbie loved me, talking all the time, seemingly fascinated by whatever I said. He wanted to take the "nice girl" whereever she wanted to go tomorrow too. "I pick you up". "You ... read more

Checking in at Little India SAT 6 AUG: Singapore, yay! Easily got through immigration, then customs, not having to wait for bags. God not checking anything is a great idea, i tell you. Easily found the shuttle bus, and only had to wait about 5 minutes. Only 1 guy was on there as well. A nice, friendly guy, he was heading home to Melbourne, an environmental scientist who had just been to Amsterdam and Finnland (for work!! really!) and got an overnight and part day here in Singapore. We chatted all the way. He even remarked how light I was travelling, so I know now I've definately done well. He had what I had, plus a BIG bag for his 2 week trip. We talked about China cause he'd like to go there too. I ... read more

It took me some time before I finally decided to buy digicam. I’ve been a photo hobbyist since 2002, not to mention that I always believed that my photography isn’t just a means of self expression, but also a tool which I can use in my profession as a journalist. My personal mantra: the words are there to explain, the images are there to illustrate. Both should tell a story and tell it well. But I always preferred film, believing that any serious photographer should learn how to operate a manual SLR first. I have two second hand Nikon manual SLR and an Olympus point-and-shoot film camera. I’m also bit short in cash. At a price of over 1,000 Singapore dollars (or roughly US$600) - it’s beyond my means to buy a digital SLR. Sure, ... read more

So what and where’s Mustafa’s? For those who haven’t been in Singapore, Mustafa’s sort of a landmark in a country where shopping is sort of a national sport (next to eating, I think). Located in Little India (one of my favorite places in Singapore), Mustafa’s is a 24-hour shopping center, where you can just buy about anything (from digicams to underwear to canned garbanzos to jewelry) for reasonable prices. Perfect for those who are in retail therapy but don't have enough moolah to support their, uhm, "habit" . The downside is, Mustafa’s always crowded. So claustrophobes - beware! Plus, goods are stacked up together in such a small space that it’s difficult to navigate the grocery section with a bulky shopping cart. My colleague, Shahira, a Mustafa regular, swore that the best time to shop ... read more

My friend Persis, a Malaysian filmmaker, asked me if I would miss my apartment in Singapore. It’s a fair question considering that I’m a homebody and I lived in this walk-up apartment for 3 ½ years (out of my 4 ½ years in Singapore). I’m house proud - I loved inviting friends to my flat because I was (still am) very fond of this apartment which I’ll be leaving soon. It’s an old apartment (about 50 years old). And as such it doesn’t have the amenities that once can usually find in the spanking new high-rise condominiums dotting the island state. There’s no swimming pool, no gym, no country club in my apartment block. But my apartment’s fully-furnished, spacious (over 100 square meters - that’s big in land-scarce Singapore), airy (BIGGGG windows), with paintings and ... read more

If ever I win a Noble Prize for pre-travel preparations, my thank you speech has to include an acknowledgement to two important things that allowed me to organize my travel itinerary even if I’m still tied to my workstation in Singapore, writing news stories that will be published by my soon-to-be-ex-media company. I would like to thank the guidebooks (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Frommer’s), some of which I bought, others were borrowed from my friends for giving me phone numbers, websites and addresses of hostels, hospitals, travel agencies, book shops and vegetarian restaurants; a brief history and health advisory of all the countries I will be visiting in the next three months: Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Nepal, India and Indonesia. And second, from the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank the Internet which ... read more
