This travelogue is a documentation of our DIY trip to Singapore and Malacca (Malaysia) from October 30 (Sunday) to November 4 (Friday). It is a compilation of our actual experiences during the travel and other tips from my month-long research on the two countries before we left. Our schedule was as follows: Singapore - October 30 (Sunday) to November 2 (Wednesday) Malacca - November 2 (Wednesday) to November 3 (Thursday) -- see Malacca blog Singapore - November 3 (Thursday) to November 4 (Friday) -- see Singapore part 3 blog This is my second time in Singapore (the first having been last June) and my first time in Malaysia. Ok, so today is a little rainy (I swear it's a monsoon!!!) so I thought it was a perfect day to update our journal. After arriving on Saturday morning, Leslie and I slept for a bit and then headed off to Bedok Reservoir for the World Cup wakeboarding competition. It was pretty cool and they had male/female competitors from 16 different countries, including Canada. They were amazing and make it look soooo easy. They even had one girl from Singapore who was 12.....yep, 12! crazy! So, we basked in the sun and watched that and had some delicious wonton soup before heading back to the hostel for an early night. Sunday, we met up with friends of Shaun's grandma's that she had met on a previous trip. Carrie and her sister took us for Dim Sum ... read more

I know I have a few entries that start with an excuse for the delay in 'publishing' it, and this time it's really down to my technophobe ways. Then dreading the catch up! Finally I've learned a few tricks so you'll have my last 5 weeks all at once- SORRY! I must have hardened from numerous travelling situations over the last few months, as I feel as though I've floated into this interesting city with such ease. I suppose being able to read a map, and ask just about anyone a question and get a smile and an english response helps too! Having said that, I did just leave a slight nightmare behind in Phuket. I had enjoyed my comfy bed for a little too long resulting in missing the cheap airport bus and instead roaming ... read more

Well, now that we have been living in Bangkok for almost 3 months, we decided to do our first weekend trip out of town. Saturday afternoon we boarded Turkish Airlines, which has a stopover in BKK on its route from Istanbul to Singapore. Suffice it to say that the flight crew must have attended the Aeroflot School of Inflight Charm as we didn’t spot a single smile from the flight crew on the entire flight. We also discovered that there were a couple of pretty stinky people in our vicinity on the aircraft. Overall, we were pretty unimpressed with Turkish and we have ruled them out for any future long haul flights. 2 ½ hours later we landed in Singapore. The orderliness! The cleanliness! It is quite beautiful, very manicured, beautiful plantings everywhere. Everyone spoke English. ... read more

WE MADE IT!!!!! Wow, what a long travel day! The flight from LA to Tokyo was really empty so Leslie and I had our own 3 seats to lay down in and sleep and watch movies. So cool, they're movies on demand so you just start whichever of the 60 choices whenever! Made the time go by a little faster anyways. The flight from Tokyo to Singapore was packed so upright we sat and less sleep we got. Now, we are waiting at the airport until the MRT (train system) starts running in 4 hours and will head to the hostel for a nice sleep (hopfeully). We are staying at the Fern Loft and they're website is www.fernloft.com (super cute by the looks of it!!) if you want to check it out! All for now. Write ... read more

We flew into Singapores Changi airport in the early evening & immediately got a taxi to the Golden Tower complex. Once out on the humid street we picked a travel agent randomly (only factor being no queue) & purchased a bus ticket to Kuala Lumpur. Within half an hour of bus travel we were at the Malaysian border filling in immigration cards which required us to report to plant & health quarantine as we had been in Africa in the previous 6 days. As there didn't seem to be a plant & health quarantine we just sailed through & that was it for Singapore.... read more

Well started the next leg of my journey and have just spent three nights in Singapore. Made it to the hostel o.k after taking the local bus where the bus driver was kind enough to remember not to tell me when to get off. Luckily I was just about awake and had been watching the street names so I only had to go on one extra stop. Hostel was above a bar in one of the new up and coming red light districts of Singapore. A street filled with bars and Hotel 81's which apparently are rented by the hour! Nevermind. The accommodation iteself was o.k. and i shared a room with 5 teachers from Thailand. Made friends with two girls from London - Jen and Priya who are on a trip around Asia and South ... read more

hey there, so this is it, we're in paradise. after 13h on the plane and 2h stuck at the airport because someone had a heart attack, we finally made it and it feels great. Singapore is so nice, people are lovely, very king and helpful and there's white sand and palms trees on the beach, so what more can we ask? there's so many differents cultures living here, we've seen different kind of temples, things i had never seen before. food is not that bad, we've managed not to go to mc donald's yet, but i'm hungry all the time. we've been staying in a great hostel, there's wood everywhere and it feels cosy, when i think that we don't need to go to work the morning, i'm not regretting anything. the weather is a bit ... read more
