It's Friday night...actually Saturday morning (12:15 a.m.) and I'm in Singapore. What am I doing here? Well, I needed to leave Thailand since my 30 day free tourist visa expired. Why Singapore? Why not? I had some vague idea of going to the Singapore Night Safari and drinking a Singapore Sling at the famous Raffles Hotel, but I'm basically winging it. I should start with my final day in Chiang Mai but this internet cafe closes at 1:00 a.m. so I won't have time tonight to cover all the details since my last update. I'll tackle some things that happened today, and share about my final day in Chiang Mai tomorrow? Ok, let's go with that. I departed Chiang Mai this morning with an airline ticket to Singapore (via Bangkok) and a reservation at the Strand ... read more

What I was expecting from Singapore was very much different than the Singapore I encountered. To begin, I suppose I have an overly romanticized vision of many of the places I am to visit on this trip which is something that I am attempting to rectify. The more you ideas and expectations you bring into any given situation, the more apt you are to be disappointed when any aspect of your hopes doesn’t come to fruition. This is particularly the case in having seen Singapore this past week. To begin, my vision of Singapore is one who’s city is dominated vastly by grand, white Victorian Mansions, of which whose columns are interspersed with many varieties of large exotic palms. In the center courtyard sitting by the grandiose fountain made of marble and gold, there are always ... read more

Greetings from Singapore! I'm fairly jetlagged, so could get waffly. London with Angie was a blast, the ankle didn't really bruise (you really don't want to know) and I will post photos as soon as I figure out this IT thingy. The flight was really easy, loads of movies to choose from, music to listen to , on - tap red wine (sorry mum, you know what I'm like!) loads of food, and had some great company in Daisy, Yvonne and her brother Derek. As it was Yvonne's birthday on sunday, Derek decided to let the cabin crew know, two seconds later a gooey sugary cream cake and vintage champagne arrived! As if I need any encouragement for a champagne breakfast . . . . I've had some sleep, and I'm off out to the Orchard ... read more

The flight from Perth to Singapore was pretty uneventful and the most amusing thing was the pictures in the “if you crash scenario” leaflets… and that wasn’t even that amusing… We then headed towards a hostel or two before Suzanne chose the award winning Summer Tavern where they advertised as the best hostel in Singapore, deluxe 10 bed dorm rooms for only 12 dollars. Turns out to be about 36 beds in a dorm made for 10 beds so that was pretty cozy, also turned out to be about double the price but never mind, all part of the fun… We then head out into the night after being told by the hostel staff that due to it being Chinese New Year everything would be closed for at least 3 days - what kind of hangovers ... read more

With a 4 holiday lined up for the Chinese New year, i packed up my backpack, for a fun trip to Sentosa - the fun island, to the south of Singapore. The word Sentosa in malay language means, peace and tranquility. To the contrary, its an island of gr8 fun, merry and enjoyment. I was traveling with two of my friends, studying in my same programme (MS) in Singapore. Sentosa is a small island roughly 500 hectares in area, one quarter of the area bathed in a green canopy of tropical rainforests. It has 3.2 miles of coastline, studded with beaches. Easily accessible through bus (~15 min ride) or cable car (~15 min) from Harbourfront. We chose to take the cable car ride owing to the adventure involved. The journey started in Harbourfront tower 2 from ... read more

Our 3 favorite things in Australia* Airlie Beach and sailing in the Whitsunday Islands * Sydney * Nimbin Definite Honorable Mention goes to Daylesford. We had a great time with Simon, Katrina, and the kids In Australia, we learned that...* Australia is nearly the same size as the US but has only 20 million people. Half of them live in 6 cities * water is a huge issue for these 20 million people. Everyone talks about the lack of water and drought conditions, but we somehow managed to get rained on every single day that we were in Australia * Triple J Radio is good, but morning DJs are no less annoying in Australia than in the US * Russell Crowe's band actually tours Australian clubs * you really do hear the song "Down Under" down ... read more

Sun 29th - Mon 30th January SINGAPORE Our experience of Singapore differed from our expectations. Singapore is known for its extreme laws governing public order and cleanliness. The city was cleaner than other cities we have seen in Asia, yet besides the scary signs threatening massive fines, it was common to see dirty sidewalks and litter. This city-state is straightforward to visit. There is the condensed downtown of large skyscrapers (banks) and then a few colonial buildings (including a bridge built by Glaswegian Engineers) mark what remains of the original 1819 masterplan layout of Sir Stamford Raffles. Fiona visited the famous Raffles Hotel but declined a Singapore Sling (their renowned house cocktail)! Other than that, shopping and eating out are the main attractions. The sweltering heat, like KL, makes the visit difficult during the day unless ... read more

Hi everyone, I arrived at the starting point for my trip today; the Hangout Hotel in Singapore and they have free internet access so thought I would send this quick message. I met everyone else who is going on the trip today. There are 18 of us in total and they all seem really nice. They are all British and of a similair age group. It was suggested that we all go out for a meal and then to the famous Raffles Hotel after but we didn't have enough money for a meal so just opted for a Singapore Sling between the three of us. We got a few strange looks as we passed the drink around but it was worth it! The hotel itself was lovely; there was a jazz band playing, waiter service, and ... read more

Today we planned to buy a City Buzz Card. Its only $5 and we can hop on and off the bus as we like. There are 3 differnt routes we can take......... thought this might be a good way to get around and also see some of the sights we might not have yet discovered. The nearest stop was in Little India. Well this place is, how can I describe it?....... a mixture of Rusholme and the Northern Quarter in Manchester..... its crazy as its like a little shambles village thrown inbetween huge sky scrapers! Mad! But very cultural. We liked it- had so much colour kicking about! All the shops were pretty much selling the same type of things............. Chinese New Year Decs, bangles and sari's....... also fruit stalls selling neck garlands hand made with ... read more
