So after packing my backpack and putting it on for the first time and looking at myself in the mirror as i am about to embark on not only a journey that i have been craving and desiring for so long, but a journey that will lead me to places, people and experiences, and it hits me. i got quite nervous and saying goodbye to my dog finchy was the start of my tears. Even driving away from my house was a bizarre feeling. So i get to the airport and saying goodbye to the family (and some mates) was quite surreal, especially my two nephews Aidan and Lachlan, as i am going to be missing so much of their growing up, and considering i dont know when i will be returning to Australia... So i ... read more

Navina and I arrived around midnight last night and got up this morning for a breakfast of her favorite fruit - mangosteins - these fibrously sheathed succulent white fruit with a magical tanginess and a musky aftertone. We wandered around Little India for a vegetarian cantonese breakfast. Chinese new year began two weeks ago and there are all kinds of preserved plum candies and peanut candies that the restaurant owner shared with us as he exclaimed, "Beautiful! Weather is beautiful! Here are your noodles. Beautiful!" and sang a song alongside the radio. The kitchen was very bright and open with a spiral staircase and pigeons above the bathroom. There are a fair number of cycle rickshaws and gutters everywhere that you can stumble into if you aren't paying attention.... read more

Laksa, Nasi Goreng, Chow Mein, Ice Kachang...just a few things we managed to consume in the first 30 minutes after landing in Singapore. Followed by nasi padang, curry puffs, and fried fishballs on sticks in the next 15. And then for dessert .... Most of you will know that we left Brisbane for our Singapore stopover (on route to Beijing) with a single mission in mind - to eat our way through the city! I can proudly say that we did accomplish this mission - to the fullest. At last count, we calculated that we had consumed a glorious 25 different meals in the two days we were there. We kid you not, this is no exaggeration - our flubbier tummies, and rising cholesterol levels will bear testamant to this. Every time we saw something that ... read more

It's Tuesday night and I'm in K.L., or if you prefer, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I've been in K.L. for less than 24 hours and it's been a nightmare ever since I got here. But I'll leave that for my next update... I need to first cover my final day in Singapore (Sunday, February 5). It was a busy day... In the morning I went to Orchard Road, one of the primary shopping areas in Singapore. Walking along Orchard Road is a fairly pleasant experience since it has wide sidewalks with an ample amount of shade provided by the large trees that line the street. Even for those not intending to buy anything (like me!), it's not a bad place to walk around for an hour or two (although I'm sure the Botanic Gardens nearby would be ... read more

Singapore is by far the best place we've been to so far! We arrived early on the 3rd of Feb after 16 hours of travelling to get there. The airport is amazing and everything is spotlessly clean. We got to our accomadation 'sleepy sams' pretty quickly as our cab driver was really good and even talked ud through everything we should be doing during our stay and whens best to do it, we were really lucky cos it was the chinesse new year so there was loads of festival things going on the weekend we were there. Our accomadation was shared dorms and bathroom and stuff but we had our own tiny bedroom which literally was just a matress on the floor but seperated from everyone else so it was nice. We met a guy called ... read more

We have arrived safely in Singapore after a 13-hour flight. Unfortunately 5 of these hours were spent in heavy turbulence, so the travel sickness tablets came in handy. Singapore is a lovely place to visit, the people are very friendly and the weather here is very humid. I have never been to such a clean and tidy place; there is no litter to be found anywhere. There are no beggars and no crime what so ever. It is perfectly safe to walk around the city on your own late at night. Bugs are not a problem either, you do not see any (i was told by a local taxi driver that they do sometimes have problems with mosquitoes which carry Dengue Fever!!!). The government here certainly knows what they are doing, it is a serious criminal ... read more

Hi Guys! well it's been a hectic couple of days to say the least, so this will be a mass update. I decided to start with breakfast with the locals, at "coffee168" across the road. Noodles with egg, spring onions and egg (I think). Feeling much more refreshed I decided to go exploring. Apparently I forgot to pack my sense of direction, but finally ended up at clarke quay, on the river. Sat and chilled with a beer, watching the world go by. After nearly nodding off (damn jetlag!) got back to the hotel and crashed. 6 hours later woke up, oops, went for coffee and more noodles. Saturday I spent the day at sentosa. a small island resort off singapore. It's kind of themed, with a sea world, beaches, golf courses (yes boss, I thought ... read more

The day being a holiday and the innate traveller in me urging me to pack up, I signed up for the Pulau Ubin nature trail. I was charged S$12 for the trip excluding food. About Pulau Ubin island, its a beautiful island untouched by human presence and urbanization. A stark contrast to Sentosa, the island is inhabited mostly by old people of the yesteryears, too old to move out of the island to the mainland. The youth have already moved out insearch of greener pastures. Main activities in the island include nature trails and bicycle trails, and ofcourse unguarded beaches. This time, I wanted to travel alone as I mostly do - this way I get to meet new people and make new friends. I reached the Prince George Park residence at NUS and while waiting ... read more

Today was my day to explore the city/country/island on foot. Singapore is an interesting place. A few words to describe it... Clean: Very little litter (heavy fines contribute to that I'm sure) and no graffiti at all. Even the public restrooms fit this description (granted you have to pay money to enter some to pay for the workers that are always cleaning up). Modern: Skyscrapers, video cameras at intersections, top of the line electronics, fashionable, efficient public transportation (above and below ground). Crime free (generally): Heavy fines and penalties is the deterrent for crime. If you break the law, you pay dearly. I really haven't seen much police activity but the threat of punishment is definitely there. Green: There are gardens and parks everywhere. Seeing that Singapore is close to the equator and gets a lot ... read more
