The flight from Perth to Singapore was pretty uneventful and the most amusing thing was the pictures in the “if you crash scenario” leaflets… and that wasn’t even that amusing… We then headed towards a hostel or two before Suzanne chose the award winning Summer Tavern where they advertised as the best hostel in Singapore, deluxe 10 bed dorm rooms for only 12 dollars. Turns out to be about 36 beds in a dorm made for 10 beds so that was pretty cozy, also turned out to be about double the price but never mind, all part of the fun…
We then head out into the night after being told by the hostel staff that due to it being Chinese New Year everything would be closed for at least 3 days - what kind of hangovers are these guys planning, but anyway that doesn’t stop us of course so we head out into the city… 500 meters later we are surrounded by open restaurants all trying to shove us into their place for food - not open my bum…. So anyway we enjoy a nice happy hour beverage and a curry before venturing off and “finding our bearings”…
Not
long after that we head towards the quay and find a Chinese celebration including a market, food stalls, traditional dancing, and more fireworks taking place, it’s really hard to describe the atmosphere of the place unless you’re there but it really was really enjoyable. We also found a really nice hotel over looking the main quay called The Fullerton - very nice, almost as nice as the hostel so maybe next we’ll upgrade - then again I think the cheapest suite would of totally cleaned out both our bank accounts, we did splash out for a drink one night but that’s about as far as we could go…
The following day we of course have to find Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling, and at the bargain price of almost 40 dollars for 2 drinks we decide against a Singapore Sling All Day Session as once again this is not exactly backpacker territory. The hotel itself was pretty nice but nothing nicer than any of the other hotels I cant afford to stay in either but I guess as always - you pay for the name… That evening we return to the hostel and it’s a small world after
all, Suzanne meets a friend she met a year ago while in Peru climbing the Inca Trail and also, his surname is Cassidy as well - honestly, what are the odds…
The next day we planned to go to Indonesia for the day (as you do) but obviously due to our hectic schedule we decide a sleep in is in order - secretly now the shops were now open after the Chinese New Year I think Suzanne sabotaged the alarms but we’ll never know… On the plus side I now know what the Singapore Top Shop (yes, I said Top Shop) looks like, and due to my flip flops going AWOL in Australia, I now have a pair of Reef flip flops with a bottle opener in the sole - how good is that (Mum, you don’t have to answer that one…)
Overall I’d say Singapore is a very nice city and I would recommend it for a lay over but apart from shopping there isn’t too much to do that we could find, of course leaving to the last minute we spent our last night in Singapore on the Internet trying to find accommodation for the next
night in Delhi - this trip will definitely get more interesting as we go…
