So today we pretty much covered the whole of Singapore, we started with a trip to the legendary Raffles Hotel and then spent the morning exploring the 'colonial core' and sights along Marina Bay. We then hopped on the MRT up to the Botanical gardens to explore the National Orchid gardens (the orchid is the national flower of Singapore). The orchid species here were beautiful and the setting of the garden makes you forget you're in the city. I was really looking forward to seeing the hybrid orchids specifically commemorating Will's & Kate's trip earlier this year. Unfortunately these orchids were not on display :( We ended our day with the night safari - a separate park to the main zoo, which you can either walk or get a tram ... read more

I waved goodbye to the four-poster bed in the morning, quietly vowing that one day it would be mine! We headed to the Baba-Ngong museum in Malacca, which was laid out as a typical Peranakan family house in the 1700s. The museum manager was a very stressed little lady, her main job was chasing Chinese tourists around the house screaming 'no photos!'. One final time around St Paul's hill and then we headed off to the bus station. The bus to Singapore was a smooth 5 hour ride although it dropped us off in the middle of nowhere! After reaching our hotel (a standard IBIS) we decided to go check out Orchard Road. So it's all true... Singapore is a shopping nation (and I now know why my friends Durrgah ... read more

Answer to Q5 The chart represents the cutlery rack n the Dishwasher instructions manual. The numbers indicate which cutlery should be placed where in the rack (see pic 1) Now, I don't spend my life reading through dishwasher manuals, but I don't ever remember seeing such a chart in other manuals. Surely people can work out themselves where to place the soup spoons vs the tea spoons...! Christmas is a big affair in many places, but have rarely seen on such a great scale as on Orchard Rd. A week after we arrived I pointed out to Julia the guys putting the lights up over the road. But little did I know the spectacle it would turn out to be. The festive celebrations on Orchard Rd have gained international recognition: the Merit Award for Events and ... read more

Answer to Question 4 Damon Hill drove the car pictured in 1994 The model was FW16 Question 5 When we moved into our appartment, the landlord left a dozen or so manuals relating to appliances and furniture. What appliance/furniture does this chart relate to? And for one bonus point: what do the numbers mean? I gave you a feast of a blog only a few days ago so won't make this a long one, but this transition is important to mention as we're in our own place now. It was so odd to be leaving the known entity, the safety, the welcoming team of Regency House and go it alone in this big wild world! Andrew was away in Parkistan when I came to collect the keys. I absolutely love our place. Before I left the ... read more

Before I write about our first month in Singapore, the answer to the first three questions are: Q1 - Singapore is 85km north of the Equator Q2 - Bomb shelters have to be incorporated into newbuilds (and even some appartments on the 15th floor have bombshelters) Q3 - Vatican City and Monaco are the other 2 City States (as well as Singapore) Question 4 This one relates to Andrew. After all, we're here because of him! Rothmans is one of BAT's brands of cigarettes. This car is hanging in the BAT offices here in Singapore. The Formula 1 car pictured was driven by Damon Hill in which year? Name the model for one bonus point. And of course, you get a bonus point if you're first to answer the main part of the question. Question 3 Singapore is one of three City-States around the world. Which are the other two? The more we walk around the City, the more I am amazed at the mish-mash of architecture in Singapore. Singapore City Gallery near Chinatown, is home to two amazing 11mx11m scaled models of the island and of Singapore central areas. The model of the island has every building on it, even Andrew's office in the far North of the country. Regency House, our temporary residence, is reproduced in the larger scale model of the central area of Singapore. The workmanship and the details are astonishing. I highly recommend this unnasumming gallery to any visitors to Singapore or locals to get an idea of the areas. We're almost sorted with our condo in Elizabeth Heights. The tenancy agreement still needs to ... read more

Singapore Quiz - Question 2 * According to Singapore building regulations, which one of the following must be included in a new build? a) flood defence; b)bomb shelter; c) sprinklers; d) disabled access --- This week, we'd like to find a place to live permanently! We're so glad we have a competent agent looking after us. Maureen works for a relocation company so she's not trying to push for an agreement, she just wants us to find the right place. We found out over the weekend that the Holt Road property has gone. Though we loved the flat, we're not too disapointed as the commute for Andrew would have taken 1h+ On Wednesday, we visited 7 places. We asked Maureen to home in on areas close to the North/South MRT line. url=http://www.transitlink.com.sg/images/eguide/... read more

Touchdown in Singapore we were exhausted, instead of catching up on sleep I had watched Madagascar 3 and snow white and the huntsman. We jumped in a taxi and for the half an hour journey the driver insisted on giving us a history lesson of Singapore and grilling us on what we already knew (next to nothing) and insisting that we needed to get a map. Our hotel lobby was gorgeous, our room was slightly bigger then a shoe box and of the nature whereby if you had a shower you soaked every surface in the whole bathroom. We had planned to meet Plantys friend Rob, they had decided a 15 minute window for us to quickly get changed and head straight out, unimpressed I was relieved when we realised Planty had told him the wrong ... read more

We're discovering so many quirky facts about Singapore every day that I thought I'd set you one question per blog so you also have some fun discovering this exciting city. I'll make a note of who sends correct answers first and publish a table later! ;-) Singapore Quiz - Question 1 * Is Singapore North or South of the Equator? And how many km away? I've asked this question to start you off as believe it or not, we put this question to at least 5 people the first week we were here and none of them knew if they'd grown up in the northern or southern hemisphere. So I found out and now i know. Tuesday 23 Oct - see pics That day was the first really hot, sun only day since we arrived and ... read more

Dear Traveling, It has been more than a month now since I came back from my traveling stint in Vietnam and Cambodia. I have spent so many hours entertaining my self to forget you, either dinner with friends, watch the tTV or finish all those dvds until my eyes sore like hell. Spent more than 8 hours of sleep everyday for 1 straight week avoiding waking up so I won't think of you. And my greatest attempt to forget you? I accepted a job that will place me in a country where pretty much of my salary will just go to the house rent (yes, house rent here is just unbelievably insane!). And now, I'm typing this sentiment letter in front of a company-issued-laptop while I keep on staring at the droplets of rain from outside ... read more
