I left London in the pouring rain and arrived in KL to 30 degree heat and extreme humidity.... and it was only 9am in the morning. Ekk. I couldn't check into my hotel straight away so sought solace in the local Starbucks with an iced cappuccino - what can I say, it was air conditioned ;0) Hotel was lurvely - the posh kind with a concierge and a porter who whisks your bags away from you and makes them magically appear in your room later!! And then there was the roof top swimming pool and bar... ahhh.... made lots of use of that in the 3 days I stayed here.... alas isn't probably something I should be getting used to! I did squeeze in some sight seeing whilst I was here... partly thanks to the very ... read more

Today, before we caught the night train to Singapore, we spent our last day in Malaysia at FRIM, a chunk of primary rainforest about an hour's bus ride from KL. We hiked up an enormous hill (about 300m) and traversed the treetops on a canopy walkway, before hiking back down following the course of a waterfall.... read more

We've been enjoying a more comfortable week in Kuala Lumpur (or just "KL' as the locals call it): earlier in the week we both went down with colds and subsequently had the excuse to check in to an hotel ("Swiss Inn" in Chinatown) with towels and clean sheets and breakfast and tv and everything! Still, we've been out and about as well, starting our exploration of the city by ascending the 'Menara KL', the world's 4th largest communications tower, which stands in a rainforest-covered hill right in the heart of the city. From there, we got fantastic views including a good look at the world-famous Petronas towers (now the second tallest buildings in the world). On the walk back into the city we were delighted to see a monkey dart out of forest in front of ... read more

It was June 2003 and the mid year itch to travel was very strong indeed. Me my friends just bought for ourselves some big cc bikes and we thought why not take a ride up to KL from Singapore which is about 380km and if we had some strength left then on to Cameron Highlands. On 12/7/2003 at about 0700hrs me and my 4 friends set out from anwardin house to Tuas Immigaration checkpoint. We cleared immigration at about 0830am and we had our breakfast in the first pit stop at Johor Bahru Second Link. Second Link is also called the north-south highway as it is malaysia's mordern highway running from Singapore all the way to Perlis State which is near south thailand. After a heavy breakfast and stoking up on cheap cigarattes we set out ... read more

Just when you were beginning to think we'd done a "Jim Thompson" here is another blog. We're now back at Les & Wendy's lovely home in Kuala Lumpur having spent a couple of days in the cool Cameron Highlands drinking tea (and beer). Stayed at a brilliant guesthouse up in the mountains from where we went trekking with some of the other travellers. Bumped into the usual crowd from our slow boat that crashed and spent some time catching up with where we've all been since. I can barely move today after spending 7 hours trekking through the jungle with one of the Ray Mears type locals who insisted on teaching us bushcraft, even though we tried to explain that we don't really need it in Beckenham. Karl managed to sink in mud up to his ... read more

Hi all, Kuala Lumpur is fantastic, a beautiful city with lots to see. We have been here for 4 nights and leave on the night train to Singapore at 10:30pm tonight. Our accomodation was in the Allson Genesis Hotel which was very nice indeed. We paid 165RM a night for a lovely room. The location is also very convenient. Naturally we went to see the famous Petronas Towers here in KL, very impressive & the 2nd tallest building in the world (after Sears Tower in Chicago). Have done LOADS of shopping here, in fact we had to buy a wheely suitcase to put everything into.....so we are no longer backpackers!! I got a great deal on an XBox console, and promptly followed that up by buying about 15 XBox copied (*cough*) games at 1 Euro each.....!!!!! ... read more

I'm back in KL momentarily hanging out until my flight to Mumbai leaves tomorrow. I've checked out all of the main touristy attractions including the Petronas Towers and the various mosques. I would not recommend the Petronas Tower visit if you're easily bored to death by the many random facts that the tour guides like to spout... such as how much concrete was used in the foundations or who used to own the property the towers sits on now. When visiting the mosques, I noticed that women have a separate prayer area that is closed off. Does anyone know why? ... read more

With that title I'm sure you're thinking this girl complains a lot for someone who just escaped -20 degree temperatures. True, however, the stickyness is not pleasant. So to recap the last few days... New Years was spent at a british pub surrounded by genuine ex-patriots and terrible 80s music. You would think something better went on in LA but not on the 3rd street promenade unless you wanted to pay $30 cover for some sleazy bar. The 18 hour flight was decent. There were advantages to being seated in the 2nd last row of the plane(row 62 to be precise) - great access to the bathrooms, first to get your food, etc. I find it funny that international flights are particular about first and economy class. If you're first class you get to board through ... read more

I can't believe its December already and I have been on the road for nearly 4 weeks now. India already seems a long way away and I do miss it, all the challenges and the people and the mice, but it is good to be here in Kuala Lumpa. I arrived on Saturday morning after a flight via Singapore airport. On the flight I was more than happy with Singapore airlines when they offered me some wine, after 3 weeks of just the odd beer it was very welcome - I think that's the longest I've been without wine since I left University………So I jumped at the chance of a warm glass of chardonnay, and then to complete it all I discovered a classic episode of CSI (Crime Scene Investigations - a Morrish road favourite thanks ... read more
