I thought I'd put these in a separate entry, so its just you and them, and not the rest of my babble on my daily wanderings. Tell me what you think. This is Malaysia's vision of itself. They are called: "Growth", "Progress" "Barong Barong (Old type architecture integration and interaction" and "Harmony."... read more

(Which you can find at the end of the State of Emergency posting) Sorry to Stormwolf for mixing up the names and thinking they were her comments at first!! That reason for the smoke may of course be so, the Oz government site hasn't said anything about that, only talking about what we need for health reasons. And anything that may deter people from going where they shouldn't at the moment. To stormwolf: But are you saying it doesn't happen annually? They don't burn the forest illegally annually? Or were you simply referring to the fact that it wasn't an annual NATURAL occurance, which I take it you assumed I was saying from the posting or the attached Oz Gov. info? The only info I have right now is: * the Oz gov stuff, which is ... read more

Another thing I have to tell everyone about is this true life show I saw on TV in Singapore. It really highlights the intricacies of the various cultures existing together in harmony in Singapore. There was a lady, when 12, was told she was adoped (from a Chinese family) by a Malay family. At the time, she let it all go, happy with the love of the parents she had. She grew up, happily Malay. When she was a mother herself, and her father had died and her mother was sick, she admitted she needed more. She needed to find her real parents. She advertised for them. Her and her daughter were going through some papers, and ther daughter found the birth certificate, which said she was the "second twin". The lady drilled her adopted mother ... read more

I'd like to do a couple of quick thank yous: To KIARA, thank you for the scrapbook that you decorated for me. I paste things into it every night, so I don't have papers everywhere through my bag. Everything is organised and neat. To MARITA, thank you for your protection angel. I've always had it attached to the bag I'm carrying, and so far it must be working. I've had no problems at all, and am sure I won't have any. To KAY, thank you very much for the journal and the pen. I use it every day to write out all of my thoughts and little notes, and then transfer some of them onto this site or use my notes to remember the topics I wanted to write about on the site. To MUM/DAD - ... read more

There are many, many cool things in KL. KL Sentral First of all, my hostel is in the best possible location. It is across the road from KL Sentral (Central) Station, which means I have access to the Intercity trains, all KL trains and subways, plus everything else you get around a central station, such as buses, taxis, restaurants, shops and I'm next to the post office. The biggest thing though is that I can get anywhere on one train, which means getting anywhere for about 50 cents. Masjid Jamek The first place I was dying to go to was Masjid Jame(k). The Jamek mosque marks the centre of KL in many ways - physically central, at the centre of two main train lines, at the intersection of the two KL rivers and at the centre ... read more

Here are a couple of the signs it is August in KL, the month of Merdeka - freedom celebrations, leading up to 'Indepence Day' August 31st. As I spoke about in the '10/11 Aug Around KL' posting, there are notices everywhere about how to handle your flag properly, how long they should be and what colours they should be - exactly. I have so many photos with them, I thought I'd put a few of the best ones in, separately.... read more

Now before you panic, it's fine... there's no curfews or army out in force or anything like that. But there is a state of emergency declared at the moment in some areas of KL due to extremely dangerously high levels of smoke. I am going to those places, but really, I'm only here for a couple of days, so how bad could It really be. It's the people that live here that have to worry. Basically, the people have been told to avoid those areas where possible, to not walk along the streets as much where possible and to wear a mask when they have to. Well, I'm doing the first two and not the last one, and I am basically fine, cept a little coughing and light-headedness that will go away when I leave I'm ... read more

I miss Singapura already!! What a contrast just crossing a little river. I've noticed a few distinct differences straight up, but to summarise I'd say it's like going from Hong Kong to the Chinese Mainland. A couple of things I've already noticed: * Only one language can be heard on the street, minus the tourists. Along with that, there's just the 2 types of writing on the signs - Bahasa plus English. I'm certain there's Chinese in Chinatown, Indian in their Little India etc, but there would be that anywhere. I'm getting used to Singapore now, with everything in 4 languages. * The air is SSOOO polluted, I couldn't believe the difference while I was heading North. The air turned pinky-orangey, and the sun became red. You can't see anything in the far distance. * I ... read more

I am here! Finally...I made it! My plane pulled into Kuala Lumpur International airport yesterday evening. And, I found my way around the rail system and to my hotel with no problems whatsoever. I stayed in Chinatown last night in the Swiss Inn on my friend Natasha's recommendation. Looking at the map before I arrived downtown I totally didn't notice that it was set right on a bustling market street. I was fighting mobs of foreigners crowed around narrow stalls of cheap knock-off purses, watches and shoes all the way to the hotel doors. And like a moth to the flame, after I settled in my room I felt the obsessive need to buy something. My night ended on a high when I bought a pair of taekwondo shoes for $20! So far, I have found KL ... read more

Kuala Lumpur has a population of about 2.5 million people, with 95% Malays and 5% of other ethnic origin, mostly of Chinese and East Indian heritage. We stayed at the Legend Hotel, a 5-star hotel, for a couple of nights and it's a pretty spiffy place. We also happened upon a huge and important political meeting. During a breakfast buffet, Mom and I sat at a table next to one full of Malaysia's top ministers! Me, in my shirt and slacks... and them, in their beautiful and colorful original Malay outfits. Anyway, there are quite a few things to see in K.L., but it's mostly a wining and dining city. One of my K.L. cousins invited us out to a Middle-Eastern dinner buffet, and not having eaten sushi in two months, I piled my dish full ... read more
