Malaysia’s capital is an important transport hub in Southeast Asia and we had used it several times, mostly to or from Indonesia. Up to now, we have been in Kuala Lumpur four times, twice only at the airport and twice we stayed in the city. This is mainly due to Asia’s first low-cost airline, Air Asia, which is based in Kuala Lumpur. The airport is very modern, filled with light and convenient, it has only one serious drawback: it is 72 km from the city centre. There is a fast express train to the centre but this is very expensive (RM 65 = EUR 13), for travellers who are not in a big rush, there are slower but much cheaper alternatives. The cheapest way is to take a local bus which stops every few metres, that ... read more

Arrival + First Steps I arrived into Kuala Lumpur international airport at around 9.00pm on Sunday night to a balmy 27C. The airport is pretty flash and easy to navigate as almost all signs are in both English and Bahasa(local language most commonly spoken). The biggest shock was coming out of the airport to the 27C temperatures and what felt like near 100% humidity. The smog was also pretty bad at the time and you could really taste the pollution in the air. On my transfer to the hotel for the first nights accomodation I chatted with a really interesting guy who was looking at the feasibility of starting a dairy farm in Malaysia. This was an interesting task considering the heat and the humidity, but he had already spent six years helping to run a ... read more

KL Arrival Well we arrived in KL. The flight was really good, watched a good few movies on the way. Got to our hotel which was nice, slept allot. Shopping, OH MY GOD its so cheap, and so nice. We went to Time Square which has 5 floors dedicated to a theme park, in door roller coaster and lots of shopping. Soooo cheap!! Petronas Towers How nice - We went to a little zoo with a sun bear, dear mouse ( a dear that is the size of cat) and well we petted a bear it was so strange as it licked honey off our hands. The little cub was soooo cute. When we moved onto the Elephant conservation centre I think he thought we smelled as he gave us a bath as seen below. They ... read more

Hi all Our second leg of our trip was Kualar Lumpur and indeed as expected it was quite different to Thailand. We just stayed in the city and wandered around ourselves. We got to see the Petronas Twin towers (the tallest building in Asia and one of the tallest in the world). They really were an amazing site but unfortunately we couldnt get to go up them as the ticket allocation for that day was maxed. So off we went to the KL Tower....the 4th tallest communications tower in the world, here we went up 280 meters to the observation deck. The view was unbeleivable! Although we really enjoyed KL, we were there 3 days and it really was enough time as not a whole lot to see. The nightlife was good though but the heat ... read more

Into KL at 6am... damn another of those missing days, too late to check in, too early to have had a decent nights sleep, 4 hours bus sleep and wandering around the hostels looking for a place to stay - so again the usual, take the first place that has a sofa spare. Eventually I checked in to the Pudu Hostel, windowless dorm rooms, but a friendly vibe and air-conditioning, probably essential for breathing during the night. Kuala Lumpur bustles, monument to a Tiger Economy. National sport, shopping, national stadium, the golden triangle Kuala Lumpur. In the market for a waterproof housing and a small digital camera I spent the first few days searching the malls for a suitable model and price, more research on the Internet, confirming the quotes as really great prices, and the ... read more

Im afraid i dont think we wil be getting any photos on here now because we are coming back soon and its not worth us downloading. So its just boring writing, ill keep it brief. In Penang we had a lovely weekend with Ian and Victoria in a lovely hotel. We then made it up to the Cameron Highlands which was so nice to be in such cool temperatures, probably colder than home. We did a few jungle walks and drank a lot of tea, (which it is famous for) there are tea plantations everywhere!! We then made it down to Kuala Lumpur where we had booked ourselves into a 'proper' hotel and it is nice. We have spent most of our time here wondering around the numerous shopping malls and markets. Its so futuristic. Yesterday ... read more

We never did get our dives. Gills ear infection did clear up - but a week later - in Kuala Lumpur (KL). We decided to head for KL in case Gills ear infection needed medical attention. In the end it was me that needed the doctor for the usual traveller condition, 'unhappy tummy' as we prefer to call it. A note about the hospital system, it's cheap; 12 pounds to see a GI consultant, but only 3 quid to see a regular doctor. We only had to wait 30 mins from entering the hospital, a tad shorter than the 3 weeks in the UK. Since then we haven't done as much as planned. We've seen the Petronas towers (by accident - the rail system isn't as easy to use as Singapores), lots of shopping malls, the ... read more

After Singapore Malaysia is the obvious place to travel to, but with limited time we decided to just go to Kuala Lumpur. Getting to KL from Singapore is easy - you can take the bus or the train and it's only a few hours. We opted for the train and discovered that Britain is about the only country left in the world where train stations are still in city centres. Singapore's train station is on the outskirts of the city centre and is decidedly faded - a remnant of colonial times, it even had a waiting room for VIPS - how many VIPS travel by rain these days?! The express train turned out to be anything but express, it crawled through the countryside, but it was comfortable and inexpensive. As we got into Malaysia the visibility ... read more

Like yesterday I really got around today! Here are some of the cool places that I went to and some of the better photos that I took. The mosque under construction I found the mosque again, that I saw yesterday. It fascinates me, cause it is obviously going to be so grand, and is still under construction. You can see a bit of the window work going in, the beginnings of the fantastic roof work and the overall picture of a beautiful building in the making. I don't know anything about it yet. There are no signs of what it could be called. We'll have to see over the next few months to a year.
