Stansted to Kuala Lumper - 14 hour flight We start our long trip with a delay the guy over the tannoy announces indefinite as there has been a crash on the motorway involving our catering team. I was a bit dissapointed but then thought about it. Firstly about the guys who may have been involved in the crash and the fact we have plenty of time on our hands. As it happens we set off just 1 hour later than planned. The flight as expected was hard going. Trying to sleep to pass the time, no chance! When passing Romania it was rather a bumpy ride to say the least, heart in mouth. Having a tall companion made our seating arrangement cosy, if you know what I mean. On arrival the heat hits you like an ... read more

Thursday, 3rd June, Kuala Lumpur. The ship docked in the Port of Kelang where we became a part of farcicle operation of trying to organise 1500 ageing Australian pensioners into tour groups for the trip into Kuala Lumpur. And what a farce it was. I have seen better organized wars and it was funny, but not funny, seeing everyone walking round in circles not knowing where to go and trying to follow instructions issued by Ships crew who didn’t know where to send us. How we all ended up aboard thirty odd coaches in some semblance of order is beyond me. Anyway, off we go on a hot steamy day in a hot steamy coach. If we thought Darwin, Bali and Singers was hot then we got a shock in this place. And it got better ... read more

To the surprise of everyone, we made it to the airport on time. Check-in was a breeze, as we had done the online checkin the night before, and because of this, didn’t have to cue up. Straight through the bag drop, and into customs. Highly recommended. Customs took a bit of time (Kathy was checked for drugs at both checkpoints), then it was breakfast time. As the plane had arrived early, they decided to board it early as well, so we had to rush breakfast through and get on the plane. The trip to KL was 8 hours, and pretty uneventful. Air Asia are quite good to fly with, but like other budget airlines, all the extras cost more, so there was no inflight entertainment, and all food was extra. They were also reluctant to change ... read more

Halal in KL! Had a fab time though it went quick I was able to see and do lots. Back to the usual haunts in Singy and added a new place to the list with KL. Though different...both are very welcoming cosmopolitan cities displaying a wonderful blend of cultures. Shopping, sights and food are great...so great I opted out of the F1 to do more! Petrona Towers were pretty cool. An icon in the city which you can see from most anywhere. Also visited the palace, national mosque, independence square, KL tower (omg...gibbons!) and so on. I stayed in the 'Golden Triangle' which is definitely the most happening part of town and the place to be. I found an excellent restaurant serving whole organic vegan food which I think I sampled most everything from le menu...I ... read more

Day 118: Thursday, March 25th, 2010. Sydney, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia So I got up a few hours before checkout and I went to find a post office to mail some stuff back to the States. I just wanted to get rid of some of the weight in the backpack so I was sending paperwork (trip souvenirs and such), clothing that I still wanted, a back up hard drive of my pictures, and underwater disposable camera that I had used on the Reef but forgot to get processed and a LOTR Location book that I had picked up in New Zealand and had kept forgetting to mail off. None of it suspicious stuff, but I ended up having to open the box twice after it was sealed because it ends up I couldn't send the ... read more

One thing I've learned about Southeast Asia is that there are multiple cheap airlines with no rhyme or reason to when they have what rate (at least that i can find). It's also a great thing that I research airports and such. Two airports? In the same city? Yes, that's right. Seriously. The Low Cost Carrier has a separate airport about 5 miles or so away from the international airport. We weren't there for very long but it seemed familiar. Are you sure we aren't in Singapore? Really, the only reason I'm publishing this is to add the country to my list. We drove around for a while, so yes I'm going to claim I've been to Malaysia now. ... read more

For the first time I planned a trip without a travel agent. I wasn’t 100% happy with the how my previous trip had been handled and thought about all the money I had spent for their commission. I decided it would be fun to do it myself. It was a decision, which probably had a big part in me leaving my high paying bank job to be a travel agent. Generally, airline tickets are the biggest expense for any traveller and finding the best deal can potentially save hundreds of dollars. Budget airline, Air Asia has opened up travel through Asia and has a model that has been successfully copied by many other airlines. Air Asia’s hub is the low cost carrier terminal in Kuala Lumpur. It flys into Australia, Europe and Asia. Unlike full service ... read more
