Kuala Lumpur We could tell we were entering a city by the suburban sprawl that increased in mass as we approached. Many new-build estates were in the process of being constructed - all showing clearly the wealth of the city we were about to visit. It is this fairly recent economic growth that has made Kuala Lumpur a landmark in South-East Asia, with one of the most famous 'tourist' attractions: the Petronas Towers. It was a lengthy bus ride, but eventually (after passing several MacDonald's and KFCs) we were dropped next to the main bus station on a busy but not unwelcoming road. Once we had found our position on our map we headed for our hotel, with only a minor 'detour' due to roads having changed composition since the publication of my guidebook. So today I decided I would sleep in as long as I could without missing breakfast, which was 10:15. I had a couple of things to get done before heading out to see the sights, I needed to take some clothes in to be washed and go to the post office to try to mail home my Indonesia travel guide. The clothes were easy, 1 item dry cleaned the rest laundered and for a good price. The book was another thing. I wanted to send it surface (boat), and was told I could but had to go buy the packing materials as the post office had none, so I did, but was told a padded envelope was not good enough and it must go in a box. I pleaded with the guy at the PO but ... read more

Spent our last few days winding down. We stayed in the 3rd best hostel in Asia, supeeeeeer nice. Went to the zoo one day, up the petronas towers and other equally touristy attractions. Did I mention shopping??? SOOOOOO MUCH SHOPPING... read more

Have arrived in KL and it is stinky and HOT. Actually humid would be more accurate. Give me a 45 degree day in Adelaide anytime over a 30 degree day in KL at 80% humidity. The humidity in KL is like a clammy, unwelcome hug and had taken some major adjusting to for all of us (it's a competition between Phoebe and I as to who is coping the least). That doesn't stop the locals wearing jumpers and jeans, and closed toe shoes and woolen stockings though.......I think they're bonkers. After a very pleasurable Air Asia flight (highly recommended!) we decided to go a little more upmarket for our first night and stayed in a place in KL Sentral (yes, that would be the Malay version of 'Central'....I've noticed that type of thing a bit, for ... read more

Ok Flight from Gold Coast to KL with Air Asia was great, although you do have to buy all your own food and water and they don't take credit card.. so thank you Mum for $10 as If I didn't have that I would have been very hungry/thirsty. KL Itself was a big city with lots of shopping centres, I only stayed a few days to get an idea of what was around and take photos,ea t, get recommendations for where I should go. After days of 35 degrees plus I knew I needed to get to a beach ASAP! After I met Oonagh and Ryan, Sue and Suvie we spent a few days sampling the local food and beer and movie theater (do not see case 39). We found A shopping centre that has the ... read more

So we were on our way to Malaysia and Craig began to sing “Malaysia truly Asia”, a slogan we had heard. After a long cramped minibus ride we were dropped off at another travel agent and we waited for our VIP bus to Kuala Lumpur. The VIP bus was well sweet. The seats were like beds and the aircon was pumping. It was so cold when we crossed the border i got my sleeping bag out n snuggled down for a good night’s sleep. What I did not realise was that Malaysia was 1 hour ahead and buses there were not on time but early by a few hours. So instead of getting dropped off at 6am we got there at 4am. We were both awoken by a guy shouting hurry up hurry up Kuala Lumpur ... read more

Now we are left with only vivid memories of Singapore. An amazing place, we especially remember the warm wind, the high-level garden joining two skyscrapers at the 50th floor (and overhanging them), the floral streets, the Grand Prix circuit, the view of third-world Indonesia just across the water and the lively parties under the canopy at Clarke Quay - who says Singaporeans don't know how to party! We were also delighted to meet Kate Drewer (Anne Pither's daughter) and her small children for coffee just before we left. They also seemed delighted with the place. Now, we've dragged ourselves up to KL, still suffering Jet Lag but gradually improving. Quite different, but just as hot, especially in the stifling Bus Station yesterday. But the food is good and a lot cheaper than S. Pity about the ... read more

Our flight to KL was great, no complaints regarding the food or service, except I did manage to snap my ipod headphone jack and our day-pack ripped! I guess there will always be things going wrong here and there on a trip like this... Once we'd finished in customs and all that boring stuff, we trekked outside to find a bland and rainy sky along with some humidity, a billion desperate taxis and people everywhere! Air Asia have their own airport in KL which is a little bit special, it's called the KL low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) and is the central hub for most of Air Asia's international as well as domestic flights. We eventually found our pre-booked skybus and were led onto the bus by friendly bus boys with umbrellas. The bus trip to ... read more

From there Alex led the way. i was slightly nervous first night out in diff country on my own but Alex ... read more
