This time I headed to the Batu Caves and it was nice, but i only stayed there for about 20 minutes and got a little bored. Climbed about 267 steps or something and the caves are at the top of the hill, but theres a bit of grafitti and a bit dirty, did see some monkeys. Apart from that I did hardly anything, I was on a very limited budget eating the same cheap food on a continous basis. I did manage to get up at 4am to watch the Man Utd vs Arsenal game and then straight back to bed.... read more

After reading so many travel blogs online (when travelling gets expensive, one sometimes resorts to this..atleast I do), I thought it would be a good idea to keep a journal of my Malaysian trip. Anyways, I was thinking of maintaining a Diary starting 2011 as my New Year’s resolution anyways. So, why not an early start? I purchased my tickets some good 2 months in advance. This was holidays I had taken initially to go to Nepal. But with my friend KK’s secondment to Malaysia, it opened a window of opportunity to travel to a new place. Nepal could wait. I grew up there anyways. However, as anything in my life, it was not to be that straight forward. A week later I get a call that KK has been transferred to Hong Kong now. Luckily ... read more

26th November 2010 Our first full day in Kuala Lumpur, so we got up and headed, as I’m sure many tourists do, for the Petronas twin towers. Having been the night before and the “we are full” sign not being displayed but tucked behind another sign we had decided we wouldn’t rush but instead go when we got up. We also had to post yet more stuff home (it seems a never ending task - yet we don’t seem to have anything less?). We got to the mall under the towers and located the post office, which wasn’t hard. The friendly guard armed with a pump action shotgun pointed us to the counter for parcels, we queued and when we were seen we were told that they don’t have packaging materials. (Surely fairly fundamental for ... read more

24 November 2010 As you will have gathered from Gregg’s previous blog, we now know that he does not cope in a fan only room particularly well. I lost count of the number of times he got up in the night last night and was actually rather pleased when the alarm went of f at 6.30am. Slightly less pleased that I was wasn’t woken by our alarm but by the inconsiderate occupants of the room next door shortly beforehand but, hey ho, that’s life I suppose. The walls of this hostel were thin but the management had put signs on the walls asking occupants to be considerate of others…some of us were and it wasn’t actually that difficult to whisper to each other rather than bellow. Moving on, we rushed through cold showers, packed the ... read more

Saturday, 13th November 2010 12 years have passed since I first stepped into Kuala Lumpur with K and SZ. Even though we had since lost touch with one another after all these years, the 1-week trip was inspiring and helped to cultivate what became known as my life-long hobby of travelling, backpacking and more recently travel blogging. Certain things in KL remained unchanged after all these years. The bustling food stalls along Jalan Alor, the 24-hour KFC in Bukit Bintang where we had our first meal after an overnight bus journey and the ugly green façade of Lot 10 Shopping Mall were still surviving since my first visit in November 1998. I’m always happy to return to KL and relive those fond memories even though this was going to be my 6th time. This was mum ... read more

Kuala Lumpur!! This is where the trip finally starts! And what a start..30 degress at night and 30 during the day, so humid that simply walking 5 minutes makes you sweat what you would do in 1 year in London, but hey this is the equator climate and I'm loving it! Spent here 2 days which are just enough to have a clear picture of the city. And that was quite a picture. Enjoyed walking for a few hours under all those tall buildings (included the Petronas Towers, one of the tallest skyscrapers) and the hoping on and off the monorail (reminded me of a simpson episode). The modern district is peculiar as there's plenty of new shiny stuff but then you have just to turn the corner to find few old school stalls selling local ... read more

We only stayed in Malaysia for two nights because we spent so much time in Thailand. As soon as we got to Kuala Lumpur (KL) we were immidiately reminded how cheap thailand was. We were spending 1 pound a pint in thai and lee had just bought 1 for 9 pounds in KL. Very expensive, food is also expensive so we decided we wont go out drinking......untill we met these dutch lads who had a great idea to get drunk at the hostel on cans and go straight to a club at 1ish to save money. It cost 10 pound just to get in the club! Anyway, we went to the KL tower which is the 3rd highest telecommunication tower in the world, great views how ever it was very smoggy so couldnt see as far ... read more

Greetings from the cultural melting pot that is Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia! We're going to have a fun contest in this blog and see if anyone can guess what Jeremy is holding in the photo below (and the two below that). This was a seriously strange food that was seriously delicious (and that's the only hint you're getting)!! Post your guesses in our comment section and we'll see if anyone is even remotely close; we'll give you the answer in our next blog! Anyway, before I delve into our newest destination, allow me to fill you in on our final day in Singapore. (I found out why I nearly died our first day, by the way. The temperature reached a sizzling 102F, and factoring in the soaring humidity, the heat index was just ... read more

Hi everyone. After a tedious 12 hour flight from London we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. I hate flying and am very glad to be off the plane (for now!). K L is a very modern city and the transport system is amazing. So with our backpacks hoisted for the first time we were off on the high speed connection from the airport into KL. It is very easy to buy tickets for the high speed train and only a short walk to the platform. When we arrived at KL Central we had to make a decison - do we take the Metro or get a taxi? We decided on a taxi - wrong decision. We bought our taxi ticket from the official booth and we were immediately ushered into the next avalible car. The driver took ... read more

Only 8 sleeps until we leave for our first real adventure. Backpacking around SE Asia - or as my daughter calls it " Flashpacking"- as we don't have any intention of staying in those $1 per night hostels listed in the Lonley Planet. We are both far too old for that! Packed my backpack with everything but the kitchen sink and then tried to lift it! I think that it's all going to have to come out again and some serious decisions are going to have to be made about what I take with me! I have never done this before. I am more used to guided tours where someone takes you and your luggage everywhere for you! So this will be a new experience. The first part of our trip is fairly well organised so ... read more
