Rise and shine - 5am and our early flight to Kuala Lumpur beckons. Dad took me the scenic route through Kangaroo Ground and Wattle Park to ensure that it was ingrained in me how very pretty Australia is. "Look daughter!" said father, "See the glorious landscape our beautiful Melbourne has. Will thoust not return speedily to thy Papah?".”Yah Papah," I duly responded "this landscape is just as glorious as thou mentioned earlier". Short interjection for a great backstory: I had been freaking out about the flight because I felt like I was getting sick with an ear infection. Turned out it was a pimple. In my ear. Which I popped. Result: Both gross, yet awesome. The happy couple arrived in Malaysia after an 8 hour flight. Upon arrival we encountered above average humidity and a smoggy ... read more

The last few days of our holiday with the mob were in Kl to try to beat jet lag.Did'nt work though as even the youngsters in the mob suffered for a couple of days after arriving back in Oz. We stayed at a beaut place called Somerset Ampang, very nice. Good people at reception & large rooms with excellent water pressure & plenty of hot water. we had a studio room which had a washimg machine & dryer & full kitchen though the next door restaurant was very good & reasonably priced. The hotel is 2 minutes from the rail in a quiet leafy suburb next door to The British High Commision.Breakfast was include in the price & was very nice with a reasonable variety. Shopping is good in KL & the hop on hop off bus ... read more

Hi everyone! Feels like ages since I last updated the blog, internet access hasn't been as available since we left Indonesia and we've been on the go a lot. From Denpasar we flew in to Kuala Lumper which only took a few hours. We stayed at a hotel in the Chow Kit area of K.L which was pretty interesting.... while I was in a shop haggling over the price of socks (true!) Adam was offered sex for 50 Ring git! The markets were a treat too- whole boiled cow heads lined up in a row for sale next to dried fish and some sort of organ. We both did our very best "don't heave" faces and got out empty handed, as soon as we could see daylight= exit! The Petronas Towers were really impressive unlike the ... read more

Back in KL for 1 night after my time on the Perhentian Islands. Unfortunately, no turtles. The beach we were to be based on with the nests was infested with red ants which eat the eggs so they had to be moved to the Government hatchery on the other island. Disappointing? - yes! Stayed in the village house for the 2 weeks helping to get it a bit more comfortable to live in. The project managers Al, Hayley and Pavin with the help of Charlie and other volunteers have only been there over the last 3 months and loads had already been done, we were just doing the finishing touches. This will be the base for all subsequent years where the project has moved to being more community based, using education as a tool for helping ... read more

Once again we were up at work o'clock to get ready for our flight back to the northern hemisphere. He still had to finish his packing and I was trying not look like death warmed up, so were were ready at exactly 7am on the dot. We had the usual for breakfast, tea and toast, and the taxi driver picked us up from reception. We drove to the airport. Both me and Daniel were convinced we were going the wrong way at first, and were bemused when we arrived at the airport. It was quick through security and check in, but as we approched the departures area for immigration, a woman in the booth told us we had to pay 100,000r airport tax! We didn't know this, and didn't have enough cash left. Daniel had to ... read more

After an early rise today to have breakfast in the open air restaraunt of our hotel, we embarked on our mission to get to the Batu Caves. We had ummed and ahhed over whether we book a tour or make the journey on our own and decided in then end to try the public transport system. The short walk to the monorail station was easy as was purchasing tickets to KL Sentral - the main transit centre. The airconditioned cabin was a welcome relief! Arriving at KL Sentral, we had no idea where to go to find the train line we needed. We crossed a road. Found ourselves walking along a huge construction area and winding our way in through small back alleys, assuming it was ok as long as we kept seeing the occasional person ... read more

Itinerary planned. Visas received. Currency arranged. The time finally arrived for BJ and I to take our two week SE Asia trip we planned earlier in the year. The trip itself was only spurred on by a fantastic AirAsia promotion so we booked flights from Gold Coast to KL, then KL to Bangkok, then on to Ho Chi Minh City before returning to KL for the last leg home back to Gold Coast. With fares under $30 for the Bangkok and HCMC flights, I was eager to see as many places as possible. Those well-travellled would probably suggest otherwise and as I write this anticipating the days ahead, I am inclined to think one country for two weeks might be more appropriate. Note to self for future travel! I was a little hesitant about the quality ... read more

Love Kuala Lumpur! Really easy city to get around. The airport is a way out of the city but loads of options to get to the city. I took the cheapest option, obviously. The 1 hour bus ride which cost 10RM. This took me to KL Sentral which is the main transport hub of KL where I booked my ticket to Khota Bharu for 13th then took the monorail to Bukit Bintang. Great central location with malls and places to eat everywhere and easy to get to the rest of the city. My hostel Sunshine Bedz is great, clean, helpful and friendly staff and free internet so bonus! Petronas Towers are brilliant but I didn't go up them, you have to start queuing at 0630 and could be stood there for 2 hours for them to ... read more

by Polona After 26 hours on the road we finally arrived back to Kuala Lumpur. As this time we knew how to get to Yean Yean's – who by the way was kind enough to host us again, she only had to come pick us up at the local mall. We gave her quite a nice description how to spot us, in case she forgot what we looked like: tired as hell, smelly, dressed poorly and looking like we could eat a horse. I guess the description helped and after coming back to our “home away from home”, being able to shower and change our clothes, Yean Yean made sure we were fed as well. And after our bellies were full we pretty much fell into the oh so comfy bed. The next morning there was ... read more

A highlight of this journey by far was the Kuala Mandah Elephant Sanctuary. We took a two hour drive through very dense jungle and palm plantations to get there. It was one of those days when I felt really far from home. Maybe it was when the guide explained to us that the goats were kept above ground so that they don’t get eaten by pythons at night. Or maybe it was the fact that there are tigers living in the jungle. Anyway, back to Elephants. The sanctuary we visited was set up by the Malaysian government to protect the elephants displaced by the overwhelming number of palm plantations taking over the Malaysian jungle, a problem that plagues a number of animal populations. The elephants protest being pushed back into the jungle by stampeding the palms ... read more
